Background
The Golden Cauldron Sect is an old Wei Prefecture sect founded after its ancestor learned the Pure Yang Divine Skill from a golden cauldron. The skill’s pure Yang True Qi became the foundation of the sect's martial heritage. 22
On Shalu Mountain, it holds the greatest strength and reputation among the three resident sects. The Green Crane Sect and Heart-Questioning Nunnery occupy the remaining two main peaks and become increasingly threatened by the Golden Cauldron Sect's expansion. 13 56
Under Sect Leader Qū Dōng Liú, the sect adopts a more aggressive and public-facing course: disciples are sent out to perform chivalrous deeds, recruitment expands, and the sect develops connections across both orthodox and unorthodox circles. These policies raise it toward hegemonic status in Wei Prefecture, but also provoke resistance from neighboring factions. 56 61
Organization
| Position | Known Holders / Notes |
|---|---|
| Sect Leader | Qū Dōng Liú; succeeded the previous sect leader due to his seniority and strategic ability despite rumors that Bái Xī Wén had once been favored as successor. 7 |
| Deputy Sect Leaders | Liu Zhiwei and Shi Jian are identified as deputy sect leaders. 37 61 |
| Great Elders | Six great elders serve alongside the sect leader and deputy sect leaders. Named elders include Bái Xī Wén, Gu Ming, Xue Tao, Wu Feng, He Shuhuai, and Zhāng Guzhi. 7 48 |
| Senior Elder | Páng Shì Chōng; a senior figure influential enough to arbitrate the leadership dispute. 61 62 |
| Leading Expert | Bái Xī Wén, widely regarded as the sect’s foremost martial artist. 6 7 |
The sect's central leadership consists largely of direct disciples of the previous sect leader: the current sect leader, two deputy sect leaders, and six great elders. Other experts are excluded from this core and assigned elsewhere. 22
Its disciples are broadly divided between high-aptitude recruits intended to become the sect's future backbone and other entrants. Admission is notably strict. 11
Competitions
The sect holds monthly and year-end martial arts competitions, a system established by its third-generation sect leader. Performance in actual combat determines advancement, rewards, and additional instruction; the practice is credited with helping the sect produce many masters. 23
Martial Arts
Pure Yang Divine Skill
The sect’s foundational internal art generates refined, pure, fierce, and overbearing Yang True Qi. It can only be cultivated by one with a pure body; once that condition is broken, its power declines sharply and further advancement becomes impossible. 22
- Traditionally associated with the office of sect leader. 61
- Qū Dōng Liú had reached Essence Condensing Great Accomplishment before his martial arts were crippled. 4
- His marriage and consequent loss of Pure Yang Divine Skill become the principal grounds for the later challenge to his leadership. 61 62
Invincible Treasure Codex
A divine skill practiced by Bái Xī Wén and considered superior to the sect’s foundational inheritance. It is not established as a standard Golden Cauldron Sect martial art. 16 72
- Bái Xī Wén's mastery allows him to decisively defeat Wudang's Cāng Sōng, reinforcing his standing as the sect's foremost expert. 56
- Qū Dōng Liú is suspected of coveting the Codex after losing his own cultivation. 72 145
- Bái Xī Wén refuses Páng Shì Chōng's request to share it with Qū Dōng Liú. 62
History
Moon Worship Palace Affair
Qū Dōng Liú colludes with Yuè Bì Nǔ in the overthrow of Yán Susu, the Moon Worship Palace's former leader. 2 His later actions are described as a strategy to assimilate the Moon Worship Palace and strengthen the Golden Cauldron Sect. 62 158
The sect hosts Moon Worship Palace representatives on Shalu Mountain and later serves as the site of Qū Dōng Liú's marriage to Yuè Bì Yún. 49 51
Conflict with Duàn Yì
Duàn Yì initially seeks to enter the sect through Bái Xī Wén in order to approach Qū Dōng Liú, whom he considers responsible for his family's suffering. 6 Bái Xī Wén refuses to accept him as a formal disciple, instead becoming his sworn brother and teaching him martial arts acquired outside the sect. 16
Though Duàn Yì is not formally a disciple, the sect protects him after his duel with Ruan Dong because of his connection to Bái Xī Wén and his exceptional talent. 36 37 He later becomes entangled in the sect’s internal struggle, when Qū Dōng Liú and Páng Shì Chōng allegedly plan to frame him for stealing the Pure Yang Divine Skill and cripple him. 65
After Duàn Yì leaves Shalu Mountain, the sect issues a kill-on-sight order claiming that he stole its divine skill. The resulting rumor draws Jianghu figures seeking the alleged Pure Yang Divine Skill manual. 71 72
Leadership Crisis
Qū Dōng Liú's injury, marriage, and loss of Pure Yang Divine Skill trigger an open leadership dispute. Liu Zhiwei, Gu Ming, and Xue Tao argue that he no longer possesses the martial strength required to lead the sect, while Shi Jian defends the sect's growth under his rule. 61
Wu Feng proposes Bái Xī Wén as successor, citing the former sect leader's favor and Bái Xī Wén's martial prowess. Bái Xī Wén declines, stating that he cares only for the sect’s prosperity and finding Yuè Jiāo Nú. 61
Páng Shì Chōng supports Qū Dōng Liú, emphasizing his contributions and arguing that the Moon Worship Palace operation was undertaken to strengthen the sect. 62
Later Developments
Rumors later circulate that Bái Xī Wén has come into conflict with the Golden Cauldron Sect, prompting Duàn Yì to vow assistance if his sworn brother is endangered. 127
Qū Dōng Liú later cultivates the Asura Yin Sha Skill to the eighth level and prepares to return to Shalu Mountain, intending to make Bái Xī Wén answer for “betrayal” and for taking the sect leader position. 697
After Qū Dōng Liú's death, Yuè Jiāo Nú plans to visit the Golden Cauldron Sect before rebuilding the Moon Worship Palace, potentially drawing on its support. 710
