Background / History

Duàn Yì grew up in a mountain village with his parents, Duàn Yuè and Yán Fāngfēi. He initially possessed no meaningful martial foundation beyond Minor Capturing Hand, but inherited his mother's extraordinary martial aptitude and his father's appearance 6 346 625.

He learned that Yán Fāngfēi had once been the Young Palace Mistress of the Moon Worship Palace and a once-in-a-century genius. After she married the non-martial scholar Duàn Yuè, she crippled her own martial arts to remain with her family; the resulting succession conflict led to Yán Susu's overthrow and death 2. Yuè Jiāo Nú brought Duàn Yì the second half of a Longevity Lock, and his attempt to reunite it with the other half caused the lock to emit a dark glow and rendered him unconscious 2. The Tower of Hidden Martial Arts was subsequently discovered through the lock 6.

He sought instruction at the Golden Cauldron Sect. Bái Xī Wén declined to formally accept him as a disciple or sect member, but acknowledged him as a sworn brother, allowed him to remain on the mountain, and taught him martial arts 16. Duàn Yì later left the sect to search for Bái Xī Wén and avoid threats surrounding the Golden Cauldron Sect 66.

Much later, Xia Hong revealed that Duàn Yì was the son of the exiled Zhenbei King's heir. Duàn Yì accepted the position of Heir Apparent under the name Xià Yì, while recognizing that Prince Duan's faction considered the Zhenbei King's Mansion a political threat 584 589. His royal status was eventually stripped after the Zhenbei King's lineage was uprooted 742.

Appearance

Duàn Yì is a fair-skinned, slender, exceptionally handsome young man whose refined features strongly resemble his father. His appearance, posture, and bearing can shift from that of a village-born swordsman to an aristocratic heir 6 560 598.

  • Long, slender eyebrows, delicate features, and fair skin 6.
  • Slender yet well-conditioned hands, with straight finger bones suited to sword and saber practice 16.
  • Often carries himself with an elegant, scholarly composure rather than overt aggression 483.
  • As Heir Apparent, wears lavish dragon-embroidered robes, jeweled accessories, and a jade belt 598.
  • At twenty, possesses vigorous vitality and an aura that seems to emanate from every pore 743.

Personality

Duàn Yì is intensely ambitious in martial arts. Early on, he openly desires wealth, power, women, and the chance to witness many different martial arts; he treats strength as the means to secure whatever he wants in life 40 581. He is highly curious about martial techniques and instinctively studies the skills of every martial artist he encounters 114.

His ambition is tempered by pragmatism and restraint. He postpones revenge on Yuè Bì Yún and Qū Dōng Liú until he possesses sufficient strength, rather than sacrificing himself for an unwinnable cause 49. He also abandons a plan that would endanger Yuè Jiāo Nú despite its usefulness, recognizing her kindness toward him 6.

He is a patient, self-directed learner who turns to philosophy, Buddhist scripture, and practical experimentation when raw training proves insufficient 166. As his cultivation rises, he becomes calmer and humbler, acknowledging that others may progress faster than himself 483. During his later seclusion, he reflects on having pursued power without doing enough for others and begins using his strength to aid common people 742.
