History
Nine-Tails' Rampage
Six years before the events of Chapter 9, the Nine-Tails escaped its host and devastated Konoha. The Fourth Hokage and many elite ninja died stopping the disaster; before his death, the Fourth Hokage sealed the Nine-Tails into Naruto Uzumaki. Hiruzen Sarutobi subsequently returned as Third Hokage 2 9.
Orochimaru, once one of Konoha's Sannin and a candidate for Hokage, became a rogue ninja after Hiruzen discovered his human experimentation and personally led ANBU to capture him 2.
Uchiha crisis
Tensions between Konoha's leadership and the Uchiha Clan intensified after Obito Uchiha's role in the Nine-Tails' Rampage became known. The possibility that Mangekyō Sharingan users could control the Nine-Tails made the village leadership increasingly wary of the clan 111.
Uchiha Itachi massacred the Uchiha Clan, leaving Sasuke as its sole acknowledged survivor. Konoha sealed the Uchiha compound, redistributed its territory among the village's ninja clans, and faced lasting political fallout from Danzō's involvement 153 157 158.
Root under Kagura
After the massacre, Hiruzen stripped Danzō of his authority as Hokage Assistant and Root leader. Although Root was formally disbanded, Hiruzen later entrusted its remnants to Kagura under his supervision 153.
Kagura transformed Root into a refuge for surviving Uchiha and reduced its mission frequency compared with Danzō's tenure 164 176. By a later period, Uchiha Itachi led Root, though its members continued to operate independently of the Hokage's direct control 525.
Konoha Collapse and the Fifth Hokage
Orochimaru and Danzō orchestrated the Konoha Collapse Plan by infiltrating the Chūnin Exams and replacing the Kazekage and Kirigakure's Elder Master. Orochimaru ultimately confronted Hiruzen with reincarnated Hashirama and Tobirama 200 208.
Following Hiruzen's funeral, Konoha faced a succession crisis and disputes over whether to negotiate with Sunagakure and Kirigakure or retaliate militarily 217. Tsunade became the Fifth Hokage, while Kagura secretly revived the previous Hokage to influence Konoha's future 227 231.
War with Sunagakure and Kirigakure
At Tsunade's inauguration, Konoha declared war on Sunagakure and Kirigakure. Kagura was dispatched alone to deliver the declaration to Kirigakure, while Konoha began mobilizing ninja, weapons, and reconnaissance in anticipation of a wider conflict 231 232 233.
Kagura captured Kirigakure through Wood Release: Deep Forest Emergence, forcing its unconditional surrender, then helped bring Sunagakure to surrender as well. The war ended within twelve hours without Konoha committing its forces to a conventional campaign 233 235.
Konoha's imposed terms required both villages to surrender their ninjutsu and forbidden-jutsu scrolls, accept Konoha-approved Kage, prioritize Konoha's interests in mission conflicts, and open the Land of Wind and Land of Water to Konoha ninja operations 235.
Crisis caused by Akihara Kagura
After Kagura became an enemy of the ninja world, Konoha identified him as its greatest threat. Its intelligence assessed that he possessed the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan, Wood Release, the Rinnegan, every basic elemental nature transformation, and access to the accumulated jutsu archives of multiple great villages 317.
Tsunade placed Konoha on full alert and joined the Five Kage Summit in Amegakure. Konoha later became part of the Allied Shinobi Forces formed to oppose Kagura and his White Zetsu army 318 320 324.
