Background / History

Brox and the War of the Ancients

The first documented Orc is Brox, who was displaced into Azeroth's distant past and imprisoned by Night Elf sentries at Blackrock Hold. Tyrande recognized his intelligence and lack of murderous intent, while Krasus ordered his release so that he could aid the Night Elves. 2

Brox later joined the strike force sent against the Well of Eternity. As the portal threatened to admit an endless Burning Legion army, he mounted a dragon and leapt alone through it into the demon world, declaring himself a warrior of the Stormwind Clan and champion of Warchief Thrall. 6 His sacrifice bought time for Azeroth's defenders to stop Sargeras; Hu Feng later saluted him as an Orc hero. 198

Fel Corruption and the Old Horde

On Draenor, Orc society was divided among clans with distinct traditions. Durotan's Frostwolf Clan upheld shamanic teachings, while Orgrim feared that Gul'dan's growing influence and Fel magic were stripping Orcs of their honor. 33

Gul'dan and the warlocks spread Fel power among the clans. Orcs who drank Mannoroth's blood became blood-red, savage, and prone to violence, while Fel warlocks developed green skin and visibly polluted blood. Warchief Blackhand embraced the corruption and rallied the Horde to attack the Draenei. 33

After the Dark Portal opened, the Horde crossed into Azeroth under Gul'dan and Blackhand. Durotan led the Frostwolf Clan with the invasion force but attempted to restrain his people, while Gul'dan personally corrupted the first Orc born in the new world with Fel energy. 51

Defeat, Internment, and Separation

The Old Horde was ultimately defeated after its northern campaign. Orgrim dispersed clans where possible, negotiated for some to remain in Blackrock Spire, and sent Durotan's infant son downriver rather than risk his capture. 89

Grommash Hellscream led Fel-corrupted Warsong Orcs in a final suicidal charge at Alterac. He died fighting, and Uther ordered that he and his warriors be buried with honor. 89 Captured Orcs were then confined in internment camps, abused, sold for labor, or forced into gladiatorial combat by human nobles. 89 90

The New Horde and Iron Horde

The Frostwolf Clan was transported to Kalimdor, where Durotan received the Little Barrens—renamed Durotar—as a homeland. The clan began building Orgrimmar, named for Orgrim, and established friendly relations with the Tauren and Night Elves. 67

Orgrim and Brox later arrived in Orgrimmar and pledged themselves to Durotan. Durotan accepted the position of Great Chief, re-establishing the Horde with the Tauren and Darkspear Trolls as members and the Night Elves as diplomatic and trading partners. 106

Other surviving clans remained in the Eastern Kingdoms to form the Iron Horde under the resurrected Death Knights Grommash and Kargath. This force rapidly adopted powered armor, mechanized weapons, and other advanced military technology. 97

Later Divisions

Garrosh's radical supporters increasingly promoted Orc supremacy within the Horde. The Kor'kron replaced mixed-race guards in Orgrimmar, and their hostility toward non-Orc members became overt. 455 498

The resulting civil war pitted Garrosh's loyalists against a rebel force led by Thrall, Durotan, Orgrim, and Saurfang. General Nazgrim defended Garrosh out of duty but rejected Twilight power, believing that honor, valor, weapons, and armor—not outside corruption—were the foundation of an Orc warrior. 508

Appearance

Orcs are heavily muscled humanoids, commonly depicted with prominent tusks and rugged, practical equipment. Uncorrupted Frostwolf Orcs are brown-skinned and wear simple leather armor decorated with beast bones, while their wolf-rider standards bear a silver-white wolf head. 33

  • Baseline coloration — Brown skin is associated with uncorrupted Orcs such as the Frostwolf Clan. 33 61
  • Fel-corrupted coloration — Mannoroth's blood turned many Orcs blood-red, while Fel warlocks became green-skinned. 33
  • Female Orcs — Female Orcs are described as muscular and strong; Draka is recognized as a fierce Frostwolf warrior. 51 53
  • Clan insignia — Frostwolf riders use white wolves and silver wolf-head banners; Blackrock riders bear black hammer standards. 33
  • Common arms — Axes, warhammers, crude catapults, and wolf mounts are frequent Orcish military tools. 33 51 52

Culture and Society

Uncorrupted Orcs value freedom, personal strength, directness, honor, and loyalty to their clan. Hu Feng describes their recovery from demonic corruption and their willingness to fight for Azeroth as proof that they are not defined by chaos or Fel influence. 420

The Frostwolf Clan is specifically characterized as hardworking, honest, straightforward, rational, and peaceful when free of demonic blood. Its members preserve shamanic traditions and seek guidance from their ancestors. 33 67

Orc culture treats courage as more than battlefield achievement. Taresa, a human who risked herself to help Thrall escape slavery, is respected by Orcs as a warrior despite not fighting in combat. 298

  • Clan identity — Orcs traditionally organize around clans, whose banners, chieftains, territories, and military customs remain important even within larger Hordes. 33 97
  • Honor — Iron Horde Orcs gained a reputation in Stormwind for intervening against bullies and refusing to ignore abuse of the weak. 100
  • Shamanism — Orc and Tauren shamans became particularly favored by the elements, displacing Furbolg shamans within the Earth Ring's ranks. 476
  • Hunting Moon — The Horde maintains an annual spring hunting festival, later opened to participants from other races for an entrance fee. 335
  • Family customs — Orcs advocate monogamy, though they also recognize exceptional loyalty and sacrifice outside conventional family roles. 298

Abilities & Skills

Shamanism

Orc shamans maintain an ancestral and elemental tradition, particularly among the Frostwolf Clan.

  • Frostwolf teachings emphasize shamanic tradition over Fel power. 33
  • Durotan recognizes similarities between Orc shamanism and Night Elf druidism. 67
  • Orc and Tauren shamans receive especially strong responses from the elements. 476

  • Brox, Grommash, and Nazgrim are repeatedly defined by solitary acts of battlefield resolve. 6 89 508
  • Nazgrim mastered all three Warrior specializations, switching stances and controlling rage instinctively in battle. 508

Fel Corruption

Fel power can dramatically enhance Orc physical strength but causes instability, savagery, and loss of restraint.

  • Mannoroth's blood produced red-skinned Fel Orcs with violent, frenzied behavior. 33
  • Orc warlocks wield Shadow Bolts and Rain of Fire in battle. 52
  • Fel corruption was used to turn Orcs into expendable invasion forces and cannon fodder. 50

Iron Horde Warfare

The Iron Horde combines Orc martial culture with advanced weapons and armor.

  • Power Armor — Black armor powered by Arcane Power Crystals and steam devices; it includes a shoulder-mounted gun. 97
  • Power Axes — Axes with spinning spikes and flame nozzles. 97
  • Dawnlight enhancement — Iron Horde weapons can produce Dawnfire; users can briefly enhance their strength and speed and form Dawn Arrows. 128

Green Skins

The Green Skins are not a conventional Orc clan, but a mutated Orc-derived force created during Nightborne experimentation. A test subject developed rapid regeneration and the ability to split into additional Orcs after consuming enough food; the mutation reduced intelligence while increasing physical robustness and brutality. 261

  • Their progenitor is called the Great Warlord. 261
  • They were established in Frostfeather Peaks and initially sent to attack Light's Hope Chapel. 261 264
  • Their society is violent and disorganized, with bosses gaining followers through brute force. 363
  • The Night Empire regards surviving Green Skins as potential cannon fodder for attrition warfare. 264 363

  • Tauren — The Tauren aided the construction of Orgrimmar and became members of the New Horde. 67 106
  • Darkspear Trolls — Their Shadow Hunters serve as patrols in Orgrimmar, and the Darkspear joined the New Horde. 106

  • Northern human kingdoms — Lordaeron and its allies enslaved many captured Orcs after the Old Horde's defeat and condemned the southern Alliance for supporting new Orc communities. 89 115
  • Draenei — The Old Horde's atrocities against the Draenei left a lasting divide; Velen acknowledges the Frostwolves' restraint but maintains that Draenei and Orcs cannot stand on the same side. 284
