- Red cape. 303
- Blue bodysuit with the “S” emblem on his chest. 322 506
- His Brother Eye-controlled state is distinguished by metallic armor and a red eye on his forehead. 467
Personality
Superman is deeply protective of civilians, repeatedly placing himself between Doomsday and populated areas despite the tactical disadvantage this creates. He prioritizes Metropolis’ safety even when Kryptonite-equipped Parademons overwhelm him. 303 335
The destruction caused by his battles leaves him remorseful and angry, particularly after the Doomsday incident’s heavy casualties. He resents being treated as an inherent threat, but understands that humanity fears his overwhelming power. 308 310
His immense strength has made him exceptionally cautious. He restrains himself constantly, respects others’ privacy rather than freely using his senses, and follows a no-kill principle in part because he fears the consequences of losing control. 320 464 507
Abilities & Skills
Solar-Powered Kryptonian Physiology
Yellow sunlight sustains Superman’s abilities, granting him overwhelming physical power compared with other Earth-based heroes. 313 335
- Possesses superhuman strength, speed, endurance, durability, and a protective biomagnetic field. 308 579
- Can fly and fight at extreme speeds; while controlled by Brother Eye, he descends toward Yellowstone at nearly Mach 2,000. 303 470
- Can physically move and redirect massive structures, including the Fortress of Solitude. 467
- Recovers rapidly through solar exposure, though severe depletion leaves him temporarily unable to fight. 475
Super Senses and Intellect
Superman possesses super hearing, super vision, and exceptionally fast mental processing. 308 333
- His normal senses can cover at least a large region, though outer space interferes with his ability to monitor Earth directly. 333
- Can perceive fine physical details such as fingerprints and cells through his super vision. 506
- Built a zero-delay Kryptonian communication system for Lois Lane and Martha Kent in approximately one minute. 333
- Deliberately avoids abusing his senses to violate others’ privacy. 464
Heat Vision
Superman can emit sustained, destructive heat vision from his eyes.
- Severely wounds Doomsday with a prolonged beam, blasting through the creature’s head and carving a massive scar across the ground. 306
- Uses heat vision as a ranged option when Kryptonite prevents him from engaging Steppenwolf directly. 336
- His heat vision is dangerous enough that Wonder Woman avoids approaching a Kryptonite-affected Superman during combat. 306
Vulnerabilities
Despite his power, Superman has exploitable weaknesses.
- Kryptonite — severely reduces his strength and can incapacitate him. 335 470
- Red sun radiation — suppresses his Kryptonian powers and was used to weaken his Flashpoint counterpart. 487 488
- Mental and technological control — Brother Eye nanobots captured and controlled him by exploiting Kryptonite and knowledge of his identity. 462 467
- Self-restraint — his refusal to use lethal force and concern for civilians can be turned against him. 303 335
Equipment and Technology
- Kryptonian communication terminal — A crystal-screen device left at the Kent Farm, allowing instantaneous video communication with Superman in orbit. 332 333
- Fortress of Solitude — An orbital Kryptonian station built as both a refuge and lookout post against alien threats; its AI is modeled on Jor-El. 314 333 467
Relationships
- Lois Lane — His fiancée; Lois can contact him through the Kryptonian communicator at the Kent Farm. 332 333
- Martha Kent — His adoptive mother, whom he trusts with a direct communication device. 331 332
- Supergirl (Kara Zor-El) — His cousin and surviving Kryptonian relative. Their reunion eases Superman’s loneliness and gives him a sense of familial belonging. 506 507
- Wonder Woman (Diana) — Justice League ally and trusted friend; Diana and Superman jointly protect General Zod’s remains from Yota. 312 331
- Batman (Bruce Wayne) — Teammate with a fraught history. Batman views Superman as a potential global threat, while Superman resents Bruce’s earlier attempt to oppose him. 308 310
- Yota — Ally during the Doomsday and Apokolips crises. Yota aids Superman repeatedly, but later secretly extracts Kryptonian cells from Superman while claiming to remove Brother Eye nanobots. 307 338 472 475
- Lex Luthor — Longstanding enemy. Superman blames Luthor for Doomsday’s devastation, while Luthor remains obsessed with defeating and studying him. 308 462 476
- Doomsday — A Kryptonian corpse-derived monster and one of Superman’s most dangerous opponents. 302 307
Story Role and History
Doomsday Crisis
Superman’s presence makes Metropolis exceptionally safe, to the point that ordinary crime has nearly vanished because citizens can call for him in danger. 301
He battles Doomsday across Metropolis, repeatedly trying to force the creature away from civilians while Doomsday deliberately heads toward densely populated areas. Superman’s restraint allows Doomsday to cause catastrophic collateral damage. 303
After Doomsday is reduced to a piglet by Yota’s cursed spring water, Superman restrains it while Yota uses the Rewind Fruit to return it to General Zod’s corpse. Superman then sends Zod’s body toward the sun and destroys remaining Kryptonian technology in the damaged ship. 307 308
The battle leaves only a little over 8,000 survivors, with more than 4,000 permanently disabled. Superman personally rescues everyone still alive from the ruins and is devastated by the outcome. 308
Apokolips Invasion
Superman returns from the Fortress of Solitude when Earth faces an Apokoliptian invasion. He investigates Parademons and joins the newly established Justice League. 333 335
Kryptonite-bearing Parademons repeatedly neutralize him during the defense of Metropolis. He later sustains injuries from Darkseid’s Omega Effect, which Yota can heal physically but cannot fully remove. 335 338
Brother Eye Crisis
Grid, the artificial intelligence controlling Brother Eye, captures Superman through Kryptonite and nanobots. It uses his body to push the Fortress of Solitude toward Metropolis as an artificial meteor, then directs him to Yellowstone with a nuclear weapon to trigger a global-scale catastrophe. 462 467 468
Yota defeats the controlled Superman with a Wood Clone deception and Kryptonite knuckle duster, then confines him in Dark Space. Yota later removes the nanomachines, leaving Superman severely depleted; Shazam escorts him to near-Earth orbit for solar recovery and protection. 470 475
Reunion with Supergirl
After Yota conquers Apokolips, he rescues Kara Zor-El from Apokoliptian captivity and brings her to Earth. Superman is overwhelmed to discover that he still has Kryptonian family, while Kara finds comfort in her cousin after losing Krypton. 503 506 507
Apokolips Oversight
Following Darkseid’s defeat, Superman demonstrates his power alongside the Justice League to establish authority over Apokolips. He is considered capable of contending with Darkseid and serves as one of the League’s principal deterrents against rebellion. 508
Flashpoint Counterpart
An alternate-world Superman exists in the Flashpoint World. Unlike the main-world Superman, he is captured by the military after his ship lands in Metropolis, kept under a red sun simulation, and used as an experiment subject. 484 487
The base’s self-destruct system kills this counterpart with laser weapons. Yota later finds his dismembered body and absorbs his cells, motivated partly by anger at the treatment of a hero who still fought for his world despite his suffering. 487 488
