The icy sea of the north was still swept by bitter winds, but Tarlonnd's eternal great barrier continued, as always, to preserve the warmth and comfort of the dragons' homeland.
Melitapornia woke from her broad, soft bed. The familiar bedroom ceiling reflected in her pale violet eyes. She lay blankly for several minutes before blinking, taking a deep breath, and stretching lazily.
"It's been a while since I slept at home..."
The blue dragon muttered softly. Still sprawled on the bed, she waved a hand to the side. The sensing devices installed in the room immediately received the orders, and the slanted roof on one side of the bedroom silently opened. Daylight streamed through the completely transparent polymer shell, dispersing the room's dim reddish gloom. Various devices throughout the bedroom activated one after another, their low hums rising from all around her.
A transparent polymer banner descended from the wall opposite the bed. A faintly glowing ring appeared upon it, its edges trembling as it spoke in a pleasant synthetic mechanical voice. "Good afternoon, Melitapornia."
"Good afternoon, Omega..." Melita replied indistinctly as she rubbed her eyes and yawned. Then she suddenly froze. "Huh? Afternoon?!"
"Yes, you have slept for eighteen hours. Please rest assured that this is normal. Your body requires repair, especially your nervous system. Additional sleep will ensure that your nervous system recovers as quickly as possible."
"But I had an appointment with Speaker Andal today!" Melita cried out. "He's going to kill me!!"
"Please rest assured, he will not. Speaker Andal will merely deduct this month's second-tier field duty allowance. There is no need for concern. It has already been deducted."
