Background
Melinda was recognized and recruited into S.H.I.E.L.D. by Peggy Carter at age seven. She became an experienced soldier, spy, martial artist, and pilot, reaching Level Seven Agent status. Her actions during the Bahrain incident earned her the nickname “Calvary,” a name she strongly dislikes. 4
The Bahrain mission left Melinda deeply traumatized by the deaths she witnessed and by being forced to kill a superpowered child. She withdrew from field work, transferred herself to internal affairs, and later divorced her psychologist husband. 67 803
During her first assignment involving Richter's Curiosities, she and Phil Coulson investigated Evenson Richter. Although skeptical of his claims, Melinda reacted immediately when she believed he had tampered with Coulson's mind, drawing her weapon on him. She could perceive the Compendium of Warlock Spells, but failed its test after the book intensified her desire for power. 4 13 14
Evenson later exploited her grief, fear of losing comrades, and desire to prevent future tragedies. Melinda accepted his offer of extraordinary power despite being unable to learn warlock magic conventionally, forming a secret contract with him. 67
Appearance
Melinda is an Asian, Chinese-American woman with long black hair. After her first Fel Energy enhancement, her wrinkles disappeared, her lips darkened, and the tips of her hair and fingernails developed a faint green coloration. 4 340
- Usually presents herself as a restrained, professional S.H.I.E.L.D. agent.
- Her green flames visibly manifest through her hands after enhancement. 340
- Uses deep-purple enchanted plate armor in combat after her final enhancement. 919
- Her armor's helmet can emit only a distorted “Arthur” voice when malfunctioning. 919 943
Personality
Melinda is disciplined, blunt, and highly protective of her allies. Her grief is centered less on her own safety than on the deaths of colleagues and innocents around her; this fear of helplessness is what drives her pursuit of power. 67 339
She is quick-tempered when provoked, notably toward those who call her “Iron Cavalry,” yet she is capable of admitting mistakes and reassessing a situation when presented with new facts. 273 808
Though she often struggles to separate personal trauma from professional judgment, Melinda remains committed to protecting civilians. She defied Evenson's orders to rescue Nadia and her child rather than use them solely as bait for Locke. 362 367
Melinda is also perceptive about others. She later concludes that Evenson's intimidation, detachment, greed, and apparent cowardice may be subconscious attempts to retain a connection to humanity. 1068 1069
Abilities & Skills
S.H.I.E.L.D. Training
Before receiving supernatural power, Melinda was already a veteran operative, combatant, spy, and pilot. 4
- Proficient in firearms, infiltration, hand-to-hand combat, and close-quarters tactics.
- Skilled at piloting vehicles and later conducts aerial combat in a stealth aircraft. 4 942
- Uses Tai Chi principles in combat, forming defensive circles that opponents struggle to penetrate. 430 801
- Can operate effectively alongside Coulson's team or lead missions independently. 590 920
Fel-Enhanced Physiology
Evenson's staged treatments greatly enhanced Melinda's body while limiting the malignant mutation seen in less controlled Fel Energy experiments. Her power is primarily derived from Ghost Rider's Hellfire, supplemented by a smaller amount of Fel Energy. 340 374
- Possesses dramatically enhanced strength, speed, endurance, and agility. 340 368
- Can survive combat situations that would overwhelm ordinary agents. 368 954
- Her initial enhancement did not make her bulletproof; concentrated automatic-rifle fire could still pin her down. 369
- Before completing all treatments, forcing her power risked turning her into a mindless killer incapable of distinguishing friend from foe. 582
Green Hellfire
Melinda channels green flames through her hands, using them both as a direct weapon and as the basis for her object enhancement. 340
- Ignited a thrown stone and reduced a mercenary to ash. 368
- Corroded the Berserker Staff after its magic briefly triggered memories of Bahrain. 801
- Destroyed Tobias Ford's ghost using Hellfire and Fel Energy. 809
- Experiences a dangerous surge of hunger and resonance when Ghost Rider is nearby. 369
Weapon Transmutation
Known as “The Iron Cavalry Never Fights Unarmed,” Melinda can turn objects she handles into magically enhanced weapons. 341
- Simple objects such as car keys can become sharp enough to sever metal. 341
- At an early stage, she could only transform simple structures; crossbows and firearms were substantially harder. 343
- Her empowered projectiles can carry explosive or incendiary force. 343 368
- She later transformed part of an aircraft carrier's deck into a reinforced defensive cube. 956
Chaos Knight Armor
Melinda's final enhancement includes enchanted deep-purple plate armor deployed through a pendant. 919
- Resists small-arms fire, causing bullets to spark harmlessly from its surface. 954
- Can deploy four chains from its back to seize control of an aircraft. 942
- Its damaged helmet can trap her inside and interfere with speech. 943
