Background / History
The technique is a closely guarded Lin family silk-scroll manual, kept in a secret room rather than removed from the estate. Its scroll bears the family's “Black Dragon Holding Pearl” crest: a black armored dragon holding a flaming pearl. Only those with the Lin family bloodline were believed able to practice it. 2
Lin Zhao begins studying it under Zhao Tieying's guidance. Though Zhao Tieying does not know the art itself, he corrects Lin Zhao's breathing rhythm and postures. The technique requires particular breathing rhythms and body movements to stimulate latent bloodline force, then integrate that force into the practitioner's bones and muscles. 2 3
Lin Yuanshan, Lin Zhao's late father, reportedly used the art to form a Qi Seed in three years and become a Grandmaster Warrior in ten. 2 Lin Zhao later protects the sole copy in a hidden chamber connected to the fortress through a secret passage. 23
Cultivation
The Mystic Dragon Breathing Technique is a demanding internal art. It consumes substantial physical and mental energy, requiring large quantities of food to replenish blood and qi after practice. Its cultivation is slower and more difficult than Lin Zhao's sword techniques because it requires nurturing meridians and refining Internal Breath rather than simple repetition. 3 6 9
Mystic Dragon Secret Medicine
The associated secret medicine, refined into Ink Flood Dragon Body Tempering Pills, uses Pangolin Dragon Essence as its key ingredient. It accelerates Internal Breath circulation, helps clear obstructed meridians, improves concentration during practice, and can enhance sword training and arm strength. 3 17
- Lin Zhao gains as much as 15 proficiency from a single circulation after taking a pill, compared with 1–2 normally. 17
- Only one pill per day can be taken at the beginner Martial Master stage; excess medicinal energy may clash and hinder the meridians. 17
- The medicine is eventually depleted, making Pangolin Dragon Essence a continuing cultivation priority. 23 38
Abilities & Skills
Bloodline-Driven Body Tempering
The technique converts nourishment into Internal Breath and strengthens the body through repeated circulation.
- Its defensive focus produces resilience beyond ordinary physical training. 3
- At the Quasi-Martial Master stage, Lin Zhao can withstand an unarmed blow that would incapacitate an ordinary person with only slight pain. 10
- The technique's Internal Breath is described as Yin-cold and defensive in nature. 19 22
Mystic Dragon Seed
At the Fourth Tier, the practitioner gathers all Internal Breath into the Heart Meridian to form a unique Qi Seed rather than forming one in the dantian. 19
- Lin Zhao's seed appears as black qi coiled around the Heart Meridian in the shape of a curled Mystic Dragon. 19
- It uses Blood Essence from consumed grain and meat to grow, then sends Internal Qi through the circulatory system to the limbs and bones in a “Heavenly Cycle Circulation.” 19
- The seed can generate Pure and Turbid Qi that cleanses the meridians and dispels residual numbness and itching from poison. 26
Mystic Dragon Defense
The technique's defining combat property is its protective qi.
- Basic Mystic Dragon Defense creates a black qi film over limited areas, initially the palms and forearms. It blocks blunt strikes and weakens sharp-weapon injuries. 19
- The qi feels rough and tough like old cowhide; Lin Zhao can shift it between small areas, but cannot initially cover his chest or whole body. 19
- By the Fifth Level, Intermediate Body Protection Qi extends across the head, neck, and torso. The dark protective halo can block ordinary sword slashes, leaving only shallow marks. 34
- The technique's defensive Internal Breath allows Lin Zhao to emerge uninjured from fights against ordinary low-level Martial Masters, apart from an earlier ambush by a silver-rank assassin. 29
Mystic Dragon Aura
At minor completion and above, the art can produce an aura known in the jianghu as Mystic Dragon Aura. 3
- The Ministry of War classifies it as Military Inner Force; the Imperial Guard's Northern Guard Office calls it Body Protecting True Energy. 3
- At higher cultivation, the aura is expected to cover progressively larger portions of the body. 19 30
- A fully developed aura can make ordinary sword strikes leave only white marks and dissipate much of the impact from blunt weapons, though it is not inherently blade-proof. 3
Limitations
- The manual is traditionally bloodline-bound to the Lin family. 2
- Cultivation demands intensive practice, food, and expensive medicinal supplementation. 3 17
- At the Fourth Tier, defensive qi can initially protect only small areas at a time. 19
- Lin Zhao's Fifth Level is still incomplete; his recorded progress remains under one-third of the 30,000 required proficiency. 38
Relationships
- Lin family — hereditary technique and foundation of the family's military prestige; its bloodline is considered the key to practice. 2
- Lin Yuanshan — Lin Zhao's late father reportedly formed a Qi Seed with the technique in three years and became a Grandmaster Warrior in ten. 2
- Lin Zhao — current documented practitioner; advances from First Level to Fifth Level and forms the Mystic Dragon Seed. 2 34
- Zhao Tieying — guides Lin Zhao's initial breathing rhythm and posture despite not knowing the technique itself. 2
