Background / History
Lin Family Fortress stands against a mountainside near Wulong Pond in the Qixia Mountain Range. It is the remaining ancestral property of Lin Yuanshan, the late Commander of the Yingtian Garrison, and passed to his sole heir Lin Zhao after Lin Yuanshan died fighting Tatars in Liaodong. 1 2
The fortress once belonged to the much stronger “Black Dragon Lin Family.” Lin Yuanshan commanded five thousand court-assigned garrison soldiers and maintained five hundred fully armed household cavalry through the revenues of Furong Manor and Anvil Mountain. After his death, rival forces seized those two estates; Lin Zhao formally ceded them to Duke Wei in exchange for one hundred taels and a document protecting the Lin family’s Wulong Pond lands. 2
At the start of Lin Zhao’s stewardship, the fortress is visibly decayed: its watchtower is half-collapsed, its crenellations hold rusted arrowheads, and its main gate’s red paint is peeling. Its territory has barely over two hundred residents, twenty acres of poor farmland, and a single blacksmith shop. 1 4
After tenant homes collapse during winter, Lin Zhao opens empty fortress rooms to the displaced families and organizes them by ability. Able-bodied men join the guard, while others cook, mend, dry grain, tend livestock, gather firewood, and maintain the compound. This expands the guard to fifty men. 3
Territory and Infrastructure
- Location — A remote valley around Wulong Pond, bordered by black pines and white birches, with terraced fields following the terrain. 8
- Farmland — The fortress’s tenants farm Lin family land and provide rent grain after retaining subsistence grain for their families. 8
- Back-mountain iron mine — A modest but vital ore source that supplies the fortress’s weapons and armor production; Lin Zhao refuses to sell it to the Celestial Masters’ Manor. 18
- Blacksmith Workshop — Developed into the fortress’s primary industry, with organized mining, charcoal-making, smelting, and forging operations. 18
- Secret room and vault — A cellar chamber contains the Lin family’s Mystic Dragon Breathing Technique manual, accessed by turning a Black Dragon-patterned brick. A separate hidden vault stores the fortress’s silver reserves. 2 29
- Ancestral hall — Houses the tablets of the Lin family’s past generations, reinforcing the fortress’s role as the family’s last bastion. 18
Governance and Economy
Lin Zhao governs the fortress through Zhao Tieying, an old accountant, and a farming officer. Zhao Tieying oversees defense and martial instruction, while routine estate matters such as rents, repairs, merchant dealings, and agricultural work are delegated to the fortress staff. 3 8
The fortress’s tenants receive comparatively humane treatment: Lin Zhao does not impose extra rent levies, reduces rent in lean years, and pays daily wages for fortress labor. This earns him the tenants’ loyalty and willingness to participate in martial training. 4 18
Forging becomes the fortress’s chief source of growth. Lin Zhao expands the apprentice force, personally produces high-value armor and weapons, and sells excess stock through Northern Garrison City. By one winter, the fortress produces fifty armor sets; half of its best output is retained for its own standing guard. 18 24
Later, the workshop’s increasing output supports a cavalry force and expanded infantry. The fortress’s annual income rises to more than four times its former level, aided by arms production and spoils seized from bandits. 38 39
Defenses and Military Forces
Fortress Guard
The original guard is trained by Zhao Tieying in ring-pommel saber techniques, Pear Blossom Spear thrusts, and the Mandarin Duck Formation. Guard members also repair walls, clear snow, and farm because the fortress initially cannot support full-time soldiers. 3 4
Lin Zhao later retains the best forged armor for a standing guard and plans to build a force of one hundred Mystic Iron Elite Soldiers. 22 24
Cavalry Squad
The fortress develops a fifty-man cavalry squad equipped with Mystic Iron armor, spears, and Crimson Wind Colts. To conceal its growth from neighboring powers, the squad trains in a secluded valley deep in the Qixia Mountain Range. 35 38
By this stage, the fortress also fields fifty scouts on selected northern frontier warhorses, equipped with Bincheng Iron Armor and hardened spears. 39
Fortifications
- The walls are reinforced with several additional layers. 39
- Armor-piercing ballistae are mounted on the ramparts; their bolts can penetrate iron plate three fingers thick. 39
- The fortress imposes martial law following the capture of Night Raven Tower assassin Tie Shan. 32
- Recruitment procedures are tightened after Wang Jiu is exposed as an informant; candidates of unknown origin are rejected. 30
Mystic Arm Snow Apes
The three Mystic Arm Snow Apes—Yuan Da, Yuan Er, and Yuan San—are raised within the fortress after being given to Lin Zhao as a birthday gift. They serve as combat allies, trackers, and an emergency pursuit force. 9 12 31
Major Conflicts
Wild Jackal Gang
The Wild Jackal Gang kidnaps the fortress blacksmith Old Zhang, threatening the stronghold’s ability to produce farm tools, weapons, and armor. Lin Zhao initially avoids open conflict because the gang is connected to the more powerful Vagrant Alliance. 4 6
Celestial Masters’ Manor
The Celestial Masters’ Manor establishes itself in neighboring former fortress lands and dispatches Daoist Zhang and Instructor Li to pressure Lin Zhao into selling his farmland and iron mine. Lin Zhao refuses the sale but accepts installment payments for overdue Martial Equipment Offerings to avoid immediate confrontation. 17 18
Night Raven Tower
The fortress becomes the target of repeated Night Raven Tower assassination attempts connected to Duke Wei Xu Qin. After uncovering an internal informant and capturing the Gold Rank assassin Tie Shan, Lin Zhao strengthens defenses, enforces martial law, and begins actively dismantling Night Raven Tower strongholds. 29 30 32 34
