The sounds of smashing and swearing came from the Minister for Magic's office. Everyone knew Fudge was in a towering rage, so they consciously avoided the office. Even matters that genuinely required Fudge's attention were quietly postponed. No one wanted to provoke the Minister.
Ever since Sirius Black had dropped several bombshells at The Three Broomsticks, Minister for Magic Fudge had found himself in serious trouble. In particular, once word spread that Fudge had accepted half of the Pettigrew family's wealth in exchange for allowing Mrs. Pettigrew to visit Peter in Azkaban, it immediately caused an uproar in the wizarding world. Worse still was Mrs. Pettigrew's subsequent stunt: she had actually used Polyjuice Potion to rescue Peter from Azkaban. Many people could not help but suspect a conspiracy. They even believed Fudge had known all along and tacitly allowed Mrs. Pettigrew to break Peter out of Azkaban, with half of the Pettigrew family's fortune serving as the price of the deal.
When the situation was unclear, conspiracy theories were truly popular.
Many people voiced their suspicions and demanded that the Ministry of Magic investigate where that money had gone.
Although the money had been handled and most of it donated to St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries for charity, it still caused Fudge no small amount of trouble.
However, once Sirius Black revealed that Peter Pettigrew was attempting to resurrect Voldemort, and seemed to be showing signs of success, the whole matter became rather bad.
If not for Voldemort's resurrection, then even if someone had learned of Fudge's deal with Mrs. Pettigrew, it would not have been much of a problem.
After all, anyone who looked into it would find that Fudge had never personally handled the money. He had directly donated the
