Background and History
Xiao Clan legacy
The Gu Clan had formerly been allied with the Xiao Clan. After the Xiao Clan's decline, Xiao Xuan accused Gu Yuan of using that alliance to seize the Xiao Clan's foundations and abandon old vows. 59 189
Gu Xun'er had originally been sent to the Xiao Family in connection with the Tou She Ancient God Jade, rather than for Xiao Yan himself. Her attachment to Xiao Yan later influenced Gu Yuan's hostility toward the Flame Clan. 87
War with the Flame Clan
The Gu Clan attempted to persuade the Lei Clan to sever its long-standing alliance with the Flame Clan, prompting Huo Xuan's party to rush to Lei City. 82
After internal debate, Gu Yuan declared war on the Flame Clan, judging the Flame Clan to be a growing threat and seeking to act before it could move against the Gu Clan. 88
The war lasted three years, marked by frequent skirmishes and major battles. The Gu Clan initially expected an easy victory but suffered heavy losses as the Flame Clan gained support from the Medicine Clan, Void Ancient Dragon Clan, Spirit Clan, and Shi Clan. A Hun Clan attack on Gu World also killed two of the Gu Clan's Three Immortals. 89
Gu Yuan ultimately traveled alone to Yan World, admitted that the Flame Clan had been framed over the Xiao Clan incident, and offered compensation to secure peace. The Flame Clan accepted a ceasefire, though the Gu Clan's defeat was described as its most humiliating loss in a thousand years. 89 90 93
Gu–Lei alliance and Heavenly Tomb losses
The Gu Clan later pursued an alliance with the Lei Clan through the planned union of Gu Xun'er and Lei Dong. The arrangement alarmed the Flame, Spirit, Shi, and Medicine Clans, which feared Gu Yuan would gain excessive influence within the Six Clan Alliance. 115
When Flame Clan delegates attended the Gu Clan's Coming-of-Age Ceremony and the Heavenly Tomb expedition, they received poor accommodations, restrictions on entering the ceremonial area, and repeated provocations from Gu Clan members. 150 153 161
Huo Xuan severely injured Gu Xun'er in Gu World after revealing Xiao Yan's death and provoking her into attacking him. Gu Yuan refused elder proposals to punish Huo Xuan harshly, recognizing that doing so could trigger another war with the Flame Clan. 166 167 168
The Heavenly Tomb expedition was disastrous for the Gu Clan. Gu Qingyang, Gu Xing, and Gu Hua were later revealed dead, while the clan's younger generation sustained major losses. The aftermath drove the Lei Clan into the Yan–Yao alliance. 198 201
Decline and final collapse
With many prodigies dead and its younger generation weakened, the Gu Clan sealed itself off amid internal strife and external threats. Gu Yuan was left overwhelmed by a succession crisis while the Hun Clan prepared to exploit the clan's weakness. 258
When the Hun Clan moved openly, Gu Yuan defended Gu World with the clan's formation and later agreed to join the Three Clan Alliance under restrictive conditions. The alliance headquarters could not be placed in Gu World, and Gu Yuan could bring no more than two Dou Sheng experts to alliance discussions. 269 274 277
After the final conflict, the Flame Clan repeatedly looted Gu World, taking its treasures and the Heavenly Tomb. The Gu Clan was left without cultivation techniques, Dou Skills, pills, herbs, or wealth. Gu Yuan secretly sent portions of the clan away under expert protection, while most members remained behind to prevent reprisals against the scattered survivors. 283
