Background / History

Orphanage years

Tom Riddle grew up in an orphanage under Mrs. Cole’s care. Even before receiving a wand or attending Hogwarts, he could deliberately control magic: move objects without touching them, command animals, and harm people who angered him. 127 1418

The other children feared him. Incidents attributed to Tom included hanging a child’s rabbit from a beam and taking a companion into a cave, after which the victim was left mentally disturbed. 127

When young Albus Dumbledore offered him a place at Hogwarts, Tom was initially suspicious and aggressive, believing Dumbledore to be a doctor. Learning that his abilities were magic instead excited him immediately, particularly when he was told he could own a wand. 1417 1418

Dumbledore discovered that Tom kept trophies stolen from other children, including a wooden spool, a silver thimble, and an old harmonica. Tom called them “spoils of war” rather than theft. 1419

Hogwarts and the rise of Voldemort

Tom was sorted into Slytherin and quickly gained recognition from both his housemates and professors through his exceptional talent. He actively learned professors’ preferences, built connections, and cultivated an impressive public image. 365 1419

Dumbledore remained wary because he had seen through Tom’s cultivated respectfulness and knew of his earlier cruelty. Tom, in turn, regarded Dumbledore’s knowledge of his abilities as a threat. 1419

He embraced his identity as Slytherin’s heir, opened the Chamber of Secrets, and avoided suspicion for doing so. He also led the Walpurgis Knights, which later became the Death Eaters. 189

Tom abandoned his birth name in favor of “Voldemort,” using extreme destruction—including the murder of the Riddle family—to establish the self-defined worldview of his Path of Magic, Solipsism. 1422

Horcruxes and early ambitions

After leaving Hogwarts, Voldemort pursued Horcrux magic and transformed his soul into multiple fragments. His diary contained an unusually mobile fragment calling itself Tom Riddle, while Salazar Slytherin’s locket was also confirmed to have housed a Soul Fragment. 382 676

He sought teaching positions at Hogwarts twice. Armando Dippet rejected his first application because Voldemort was too young, while Dumbledore rejected the second after Voldemort had become visibly more sinister. Voldemort subsequently cursed the post he could not obtain. 1421

Voldemort manipulated Hepzibah Smith with charm, roses, and calculated affection to access Helga Hufflepuff’s Golden Cup and Salazar Slytherin’s Locket. His impatience over the locket led to Hepzibah’s poisoning. 676

Appearance

Voldemort’s appearance changes according to his body, possession target, and soul state. His original Tom Riddle form was handsome and pale; his later physical form became inhumanly thin and serpent-like. 246 568 1041

  • Young Tom Riddle — Tall for his age, handsome, pale, and naturally gloomy-looking. 1417
  • Diary manifestation — A tall, black-haired, black-eyed young man in Hogwarts uniform, with handsome features, sickly pale skin, and a cold, aloof demeanor. 246 337
  • Soul Fragment form — A partly unreal figure surrounded by a hazy halo; in black-mist form, he could appear as a gray-white, skeletal phantom with snake-like eyes. 384 568
  • Voldemort’s altered body — Tall and thin, bald, deathly pale with a bluish cast, noseless except for narrow nostrils, and marked by long eyes with scarlet, vertical pupils. 1041
  • Resurrected form — Harry saw him initially reborn with Tom Riddle’s face before he later adjusted himself into the appearance recognized by the Death Eaters. 1005 1045

Personality

Voldemort is intensely self-centered and regards his own will as more important than the world’s rules, ethics, or established order. This philosophy, Solipsism, is the foundation of his Path of Magic and the source of much of his danger. 1431

He is exceptionally manipulative. As Tom Riddle, he concealed malice behind charm and politeness; as Voldemort, he exploits followers’ fear, vulnerability, loyalty, and desire for recognition. 365 676 1047

He is proud to the point of being unable to cooperate even with another version of himself. Both Voldemort and the diary’s Tom Riddle sought to devour the other rather than coexist. 395

Voldemort is also paranoid and controlling. He treats Death Eaters as tools rather than extensions of himself, suspects even useful servants such as Snape and Herpo, and routinely answers perceived failure or concealment with threats, Legilimency, or the Cruciatus Curse. 616 1041 1639

Following his return, he adopted a more politically effective public posture: offering to forgive former betrayers and inviting them to help build a “new world.” This change did not prevent him from continuing to torture, manipulate, and dispose of people as resources. 1047 1709

Abilities & Skills

Horcrux and Soul Magic

Voldemort possesses profound knowledge of souls, Horcruxes, possession, and the relationship between soul, blood, and body. His fragmented existence allowed him to survive without a normal body and operate as black mist. 116 567

  • Created Horcruxes by tearing apart his soul; his diary and Slytherin’s locket housed documented Soul Fragments. 382 676
  • Possessed Quirinus Quirrell, Gilderoy Lockhart, and Fenrir Greyback. 103 391 650
  • Hid inside Lockhart’s damaged soul, using its existing cracks and foreign memories to evade detection. 391
  • Used a shared-memory “Silver Thread” to pull the diary’s Tom Riddle fragment back into himself and devour it. 391 392
  • A Soul Fragment retained in Vizet’s Soul Guiding Box may contain part of Voldemort’s magical knowledge, including Dark Magic insights. 567 1120

Bloodline Magic and Resurrection

Voldemort’s research into the body and soul is advanced enough for him to develop unstable resurrection methods and construct usable bodies for soul fragments. 116 395

  • Uses blood, flesh, bone, and memory as linked components in Bloodline Magic. 395
  • Tom Riddle’s fragment used a pregnant Unicorn’s blood, venomous snakes, Runes snake eggs, and intended to use Harry’s bones to create an independent body. 395
  • Voldemort sought Harry’s blood to incorporate Lily Potter’s protective magic into himself. 927
  • His later resurrection returned him to a Tom Riddle-like appearance before he remade his public image as Voldemort. 1005 1045
  • His Bloodline Magic is powerful but unstable; the materials used in his early ritual were judged unsuitable for creating a sufficiently strong body. 395

Dark Magic

Voldemort is renowned for extraordinary Dark Magic, including freely cast Killing Curses, Fiendfyre, torture magic, and large-scale magical violence. 116 1431

  • Cast a Killing Curse despite existing in a frail, bodiless state. 116
  • Uses the Cruciatus Curse to punish, intimidate, and extract information from followers. 1047 1197
  • His mastery later advanced enough that he could inflict the Cruciatus Curse through the physical act of squeezing Snape’s shoulder rather than conventional wand casting. 1197
  • Can cast Fiendfyre, though Vizet’s understanding and control of it eventually surpassed his own. 1065
  • Uses Killing Curses recklessly when angered, including during his conflict with Herpo. 1633

Mental Magic and Parseltongue

Voldemort is highly skilled in Mental Magic and uses psychological invasion alongside physical pain to control or interrogate others. 726 1197

  • Combines the Cruciatus Curse with Legilimency to expose secrets hidden in a victim’s mind. 1197
  • His Mental Magic severely damaged Bertha Jorkins’ soul when he forcibly broke through a powerful memory modification. 711
  • Speaks Parseltongue, an ability he possessed as a child and later used through possessed hosts such as Lockhart. 1419 391
  • Used Parseltongue to summon venomous snakes for a resurrection potion. 391

Dark Mark and War Magic

The Dark Mark is both Voldemort’s symbol and a magical control network. Its design demonstrates a deep foundation in Magical Theory and Sympathetic Magic. 927 1120

  • The Mark contains Voldemort’s magic, allowing Death Eaters to sense or summon him through magical “contact.” 927
  • Its pain is rooted in the Cruciatus Curse, ensuring that followers associate Voldemort with fear and obedience. 1120
  • He can project Dark Marks globally to announce his return, attract Ministry attention, and force fleeing Death Eaters to spread his signal further. 1045
  • Plans to enhance War Magic through a Wizard Army whose members contain “Soul Particles” and continuously generate malice. 1591

Flying Charm

Voldemort created a personal Flying Charm by deconstructing and reconstructing materials according to his own will. It is closely tied to Solipsism and Bloodline Magic. 1431 1433

  • Flies at high speed without a broom or other magical artifact. 1431 1053
  • Can use black mist to break free of restraints and evade attacks in midair. 1949
  • His method involves Horcrux principles, Ashwinders, mirror-lined containers, and the creation of a Homunculus-like counterpart. 1433 1434
  • The spell is difficult and dangerous for others to reproduce because it depends heavily on Voldemort’s personal Path of Magic. 1432

Death Curse Order

Voldemort sacrificed his capacity to understand love in exchange for the powerful Death Curse Order, enabling rapid growth and allowing him to confront Dumbledore during the earlier wizarding war. 827

Equipment / Associated Items

  • Yew wand — Used during Voldemort’s duel with Harry; it became bound to Harry’s wand by a golden connection that Voldemort could not immediately break. 1973
  • Tom Riddle’s diary — A former Horcrux containing a powerful Soul Fragment; it became an ordinary, decaying notebook after Voldemort absorbed that fragment. 565
  • Salazar Slytherin’s Locket — A Horcrux whose Soul Fragment later disappeared; the damaged locket itself remained functional. 676
  • Helga Hufflepuff’s Golden Cup — A Horcrux Voldemort sought to protect once he learned Dumbledore was targeting it. 676 1747
  • Dark Mark — A fear-based Sympathetic Magic network used to mark, summon, monitor, and influence Death Eaters. 927 1120

  • Vizet Lovegood — A recurring opponent and object of Voldemort’s interest. Voldemort considers Vizet’s soul especially valuable and sought to devour it; Vizet has repeatedly analyzed, fought, and contained Voldemort’s Soul Fragment. 391 565 1065
  • Harry Potter — Voldemort’s prophesied equal and intended source of blood for resurrection. Harry survived Voldemort’s earlier Killing Curse and shares a connection that lets him experience Voldemort’s perspective. 580 616 1006
  • Tom Riddle (Diary Soul Fragment) — Voldemort’s younger Soul Fragment and rival. Both attempted to devour the other; Voldemort ultimately absorbed the fragment through their shared memories. 391 392 395
  • Severus Snape — A valued but suspected servant. Voldemort relies on Snape’s usefulness while testing his loyalty through torture and Legilimency. 616 1197 1201
  • Barty Crouch Jr. — Voldemort’s most trusted and admired servant, valued for exceptional loyalty and intelligence. He assists with Voldemort’s Hogwarts infiltration plans and later helps administer Durmstrang. 766 1201
  • Herpo the Deathless — An ally in dark experimentation whose relationship with Voldemort is defined by mutual manipulation, distrust, and repeated violent conflict. 1376 1633 1639
  • Pansy Parkinson — A diary victim whom Tom Riddle emotionally manipulated into supplying blood and stealing roosters’ Life Force. 245 246
  • Quirinus Quirrell — Voldemort’s vessel during his first documented encounter with Vizet. 103
  • Gilderoy Lockhart — A later possession host whose damaged soul allowed Voldemort to hide within him. 391
  • Fenrir Greyback — A possessed follower punished after failure; Voldemort read Fenrir’s memories to investigate an opponent’s magic. 650
  • Nagini — A giant venomous snake whom Voldemort trusts implicitly. 766
  • Hepzibah Smith — A victim manipulated by Tom Riddle for access to Hufflepuff’s Cup and Slytherin’s Locket before being poisoned. 676

Story Role / Major Arcs

First return to Hogwarts

Voldemort first appears through Quirrell’s possession and attempts to influence Vizet into following Harry and the other students into the Forbidden Forest. Vizet resists his manipulation. 103

After an attack on Vizet, Voldemort takes black-mist form and attempts to enter Vizet’s forehead, but Vizet counters immediately with magic. 116

The diary fragment and Chamber of Secrets conflict

The diary’s Tom Riddle manipulates Pansy Parkinson, manifests through her blood, and uses her trust to pursue Life Force and a physical body. 245 246

Voldemort successfully draws the fragment back through their shared memories and devours it, strengthening himself. 392

Resurrection and public return

Voldemort later returns to a physical body using blood-based magic. He first resembles Tom Riddle, then deliberately changes back into his recognizable serpentine Voldemort form to stir the Death Eaters’ fear and loyalty. 1005 1045

He promotes an “anthill” social order in which gifted wizards rule while weaker wizards serve. 1202

His broader plan involves creating wandless “Muggles who can use magic,” transforming Squibs and Muggles through Lycanthropy Disease and Fire Salamander blood, then using Soul Particles to strengthen his War Magic through a controlled Wizard Army. 1590 1591

Assault on Hogwarts

Voldemort manipulates Dementors by exploiting their fear of Vizet, then transports Goblins, Trolls, Inferi, and other Dark creatures toward Hogwarts with Portkey Magic. 1939
