Background
Yu Xiaogang was born as the eldest legitimate son of Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan Sect Leader Yu Yuanzhen and Wang Bilian. Yu Yuanzhen named him with the hope that he would become strong, resolute, and unyielding. Because of his lineage, Xiaogang received far more attention than his younger half-brother Yu Xiaomen, whose mother Yun Niang was a servant and not a Soul Master 3 5.
He grew up resentful of Yun Niang and Yu Xiaomen. After Wang Bilian's death, Xiaogang blamed Yu Xiaomen and Yun Niang for the loss and intensified his bullying of his younger brother. This hostility endured after Yu Xiaomen's talent brought him recognition within the clan 3 6.
Xiaogang expected to awaken the Golden Sacred Dragon, a Martial Soul believed capable of standing near the top of the era. Instead, his Martial Soul underwent a malignant mutation into the Three-Eyed Blazing Demon. His weak innate Soul Power and slow progress undermined his position in the clan, despite Yu Yuanzhen supplying him with Power Transmission cultivation and resources 23 38 63.
After reaching level 29 without breaking through, the clan elders stripped him of his Core Disciple status and intended to make him a menial disciple. Xiaogang left the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan in humiliation, only to be confronted and beaten by Yu Xiaomen, who abandoned his former submissive façade 38 39.
Appearance
Yu Xiaogang is most consistently recognized by his distinctive flat-top hairstyle. He often adopts a deliberate scholarly pose—standing with his hands clasped behind his back and attempting to project composure and authority 63 158.
- Distinctive flat-top haircut, which remains recognizable even after years apart 316.
- Frequently wears an academic robe to reinforce his claimed status as a theoretical master 158.
- Later appears filthy, disheveled, and overweight after his downfall and imprisonment 316.
Personality
Yu Xiaogang is intensely status-conscious. His failure to awaken the Golden Sacred Dragon and his inability to surpass level 29 leave him obsessed with proving that he is not worthless. He repeatedly frames his progress as the product of “two-hundredfold effort,” yet reacts to setbacks with resentment toward his clan, his Martial Soul, and more talented people around him 25 38 46.
His relationship with talent is possessive rather than nurturing. He seeks gifted disciples not simply to teach them, but to make their future accomplishments into proof of his own importance. Tang San's Twin Martial Souls, Ye Qingmei's self-Spirit Fusion ability, and Bibi Dong's talent all become opportunities through which Xiaogang hopes to gain strength, fame, protection, or access to Power Transmission 54 158 221.
He is also capable of calculated emotional manipulation. He exploits Bibi Dong's loneliness and dissatisfaction with Spirit Hall, presses Tang San to publicly affirm their master-disciple bond, and later uses Tang San's predicted godhood to secure political authority. When personally endangered, however, he prioritizes survival over the people he claims to protect 55 169 335 353 471.
Abilities & Skills
Three-Eyed Blazing Demon
Xiaogang's original awakened Martial Soul was a malignant mutation of the Martial Soul he believed should have become the Golden Sacred Dragon.
- Its first Soul Ring came from a Thunder Skunk after Xiaogang abandoned his attempt to absorb a Golden Scale Armor Beast ring 24 25.
- His first soul skill produced an explosive fart, causing him humiliation and deep resentment toward the Martial Soul 25.
- Xiaogang believed the Martial Soul could evolve into the Golden Sacred Dragon if given the right opportunity 3 63.
- He routinely vented his frustration on the Martial Soul when his cultivation stalled or opportunities were lost 58 302.
Golden Sacred Dragon and Flower Pig
Xiaogang briefly obtained the Golden Sacred Dragon through a transformation, fulfilling the potential he had pursued for most of his life. Spark Academy later stole the transformed Martial Soul and left him with the Flower Pig 317.
- The Flower Pig can propel itself through fart-based acceleration, allowing Xiaogang to ride it during his attempted escape from enemy soldiers 471.
- Xiaogang treats the Flower Pig primarily as a means of preserving his own life, rather than as a companion or partner 471.
- The loss of the Golden Sacred Dragon destroys his vision of becoming a powerful Sacred Dragon Douluo and theory master 302 320.
Martial Soul Theory
Xiaogang presents himself as a martial soul theorist and a master certified by the Martial Soul Theory Research Society 63.
- He studies Martial Souls and Soul Ring compatibility, allowing him to offer Bibi Dong advice on selecting a fifth Soul Ring 46.
- He submitted his Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul to the Spirit Master Theory Research Society, but the work was rejected during initial review 54.
- His later reputation as a theoretical master collapses after his theories are exposed as plagiarized 316.
- He repeatedly attempts to dictate Tang San's Soul Ring choices, particularly by urging animal-type rings for Blue Silver Grass 164.
Political Manipulation
Xiaogang leverages his connection to Tang San to obtain influence far beyond his own combat ability.
- He publicly presents Tang San's accomplishments as products of his own guidance and pressures Tang San to maintain their bond before outsiders 169 335.
- He travels between major factions as Tang San's representative, promoting an alliance against Spirit Hall and Starfire Academy 398.
- He becomes Crown Prince's Staff under Xue Ye and later Sect Leader of the Divine Order Alliance because the factions believe Tang San may become a god 404 406.
- As Alliance leader, he imposes harsh training on young Spirit Masters and hoards resources in an effort to preserve his own power 429 458.
Relationships
- Yu Yuanzhen — Father and Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan Sect Leader. Yu Yuanzhen initially favored and funded Xiaogang, but accepted the elders' decision to demote him; years later, he disowned Xiaogang and named Yu Xiaomen as the clan's future 23 38 403 404.
- Wang Bilian — Mother. Her death became the basis for Xiaogang's intensified hatred of Yun Niang and Yu Xiaomen 3.
- Yu Xiaomen — Younger half-brother and lifelong rival. Xiaogang bullied him in childhood, then became consumed by jealousy as Xiaomen surpassed him in talent, rank, and status 3 39 46 402.
- Bibi Dong — Former friend and target of Xiaogang's manipulation. He used her affection, status, and talent in hopes of gaining cultivation resources, protection, and influence within Spirit Hall 52 53 54 55.
- Tang San — Nominal disciple and Xiaogang's final source of ambition. Xiaogang attempts to bind Tang San through public claims of a father-like master-disciple relationship, while Tang San treats him chiefly as a shield against Bibi Dong 161 335 360 361.
- Tang Hao — Tang San's father. Tang Hao permitted the apprenticeship because of Xiaogang's former connection to Bibi Dong, but later openly called him useless and rejected his claim to a paternal role over Tang San 164 360.
- Flender — Companion in the Golden Iron Triangle. Xiaogang is jealous of Flender's later success and keeps his failures private from him 63 316.
- Liu Erlong — Companion in the Golden Iron Triangle. Xiaogang pursued her while intending to use her in his conflict with Yu Luomian; he ultimately could not identify genuine love for her during the Eternal Love-Seeking Abyss trial 63 68.
- Ning Fengzhi and Gu Rong — Political partners who help establish Xiaogang's status with the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect and the alliance, while privately doubting and manipulating him 398 401 429 495.
Major Arcs
Spirit Hall and Bibi Dong
Bibi Dong persuaded Qian Xunji to admit Xiaogang into Spirit Hall and grant him access to the Core Archives. Xiaogang viewed her position as a route to resources and power, while Bibi Dong believed his acceptance of her Martial Soul Possession made him a genuine friend 52 53.
He gradually encouraged Bibi Dong to see Spirit Hall as a cage and Qian Xunji as an exploiter, hoping to make her elope with him. When confronted by Qian Xunji, Xiaogang protected himself by shifting responsibility for the plan onto Bibi Dong 55.
Recruitment of Tang San
After learning that Tang San possessed Blue Silver Grass and Innate Full Soul Power, Xiaogang immediately suspected Twin Martial Souls and resolved to claim him as a disciple. He saw Tang San as the “Great Treasure” that could erase his reputation as a failure and make his name famous 158.
Tang San accepted the apprenticeship for practical reasons, chiefly to exploit Xiaogang's former bond with Bibi Dong. Xiaogang nevertheless attempted to direct Tang San's Soul Ring path, control his personal relationships, and make the master-disciple relationship publicly unavoidable 161 164 169.
Public Claim at the Spirit Master Tournament
At the Spirit Master Tournament, Xiaogang publicly recounted an embellished account of Tang San's growth. He claimed credit for Tang San's successes while blaming Tang San for decisions that damaged his cultivation, thereby turning their nominal relationship into a public obligation 335.
The strategy succeeded in making it more difficult for Tang San to openly disown him, but also exposed Xiaogang's motives. After the tournament, Tang San attacked and castrated him, then retained only the public pretense of respectability 360 361.
Divine Order Alliance Leadership
After Tang San's expected godhood became politically valuable, Xiaogang used the claim that he was Tang San's teacher to gain audiences with major factions. He returned to the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan accompanied by Gu Rong, became Crown Prince's Staff, and was appointed Sect Leader of the Divine Order Alliance 401 404 406.
His leadership deteriorated into coercive training, resource hoarding, and fear of losing control. The Body Sect openly defied him, while Ning Fengzhi and Gu Rong planned to use his failures to gain favor with Tang San 429 458.
Collapse and Dependence on Tang San
During the war, Xiaogang abandoned his troops when the battlefield turned against him. Although Ning Fengzhi and Chen Xin rescued him, he lost his second Soul Ring and fell to level 20 471.
He later lost his Martial Soul and Soul Power entirely, but continued to cling to the expectation that Tang San's ascension would restore his strength and elevate him to godhood 495 501.
Notable Quotes
“My talent is inferior to others', so I will make up for it with hard work. If onefold effort isn't enough, then I'll put in a hundredfold, two-hundredfold effort. But I firmly believe there are no useless Martial Souls, only useless Soul Masters.” 25
“Tang San is my only hope in life. Yu Xiaogang absolutely could not accept severing their master-disciple relationship.” 361
