Background / History
Encounter with the hidden world
Fury first encounters the supernatural while investigating the Skrulls and Carol Danvers. Space-distorting magic leaves him physically battered and deeply disoriented, while Phil Coulson is revealed to be a Skrull in disguise 196 197. He uses S.H.I.E.L.D.'s database to locate Pancho's Bar, helping Noah, Wong, Veda, and Coulson continue their search for Carol 198.
The investigation exposes Fury to Kamar-Taj, alien refugees, Kree technology, and portal magic. He is initially skeptical, but quickly recognizes the intelligence disadvantage ordinary humans face against mages who can appear anywhere and have concealed their existence for generations 201 202. After witnessing Noah destroy Kree forces and the Ancient One annihilate an invading fleet, Fury accepts that Earth has protectors far beyond S.H.I.E.L.D.'s capabilities 207 208.
At the Ancient One's direction, Noah entrusts the Tesseract to Fury for temporary storage. Fury later permits S.H.I.E.L.D. to research it as a potential defense against alien threats, despite Noah's warnings about the risks 208 257.
Work with Noah and the Mutants
Five years later, Fury reunites with Noah during a congressional hearing involving Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr. Though still intimidated by Noah's power, he cooperates with him to assess the Mutant situation and accompanies Noah's group to Xavier's school under the cover of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents 224 226 228.
During this visit, Fury provides classified information on Logan's Adamantium skeleton and General William Stryker's experiments. Disturbed by the consequences of weaponizing people with special abilities, he considers investigating Stryker rather than repeating his methods 229 230.
Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Fury becomes Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and confides to Noah that internal power struggles limit his control over the organization 257. He begins developing the Avengers initiative as a response to threats beyond ordinary human capabilities, but Noah declines membership, arguing that S.H.I.E.L.D. is not yet capable of protecting Earth 314 315.
When Loki uses the Tesseract to arrive on Earth, Fury is attacked, loses control of the artifact, and is forced to confront the danger of keeping an Infinity Stone on the planet. He ultimately agrees that it should be placed in the custody of a powerful sorcerer rather than remain under S.H.I.E.L.D. research 358 361.
During the Chitauri invasion, Fury coordinates with Noah and Tony Stark to evacuate New York despite resistance from officials and civilians. He remains focused on minimizing casualties while the Avengers and mages prepare for the battle 370 376.
Hydra crisis and SWORD
Noah later reveals that Hydra has infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. and that Project Insight is part of its plan. Fury accepts the information, identifies the few agents he can trust, and begins investigating the organization from within 451.
Hydra attempts to eliminate Fury after he moves against Project Insight. While being pursued through New York by hostile operatives and special forces, he calls Noah for help; Noah, John Wick, Constantine, and Jason Bourne intercept the pursuit and save him 460.
Following the crisis, Fury assigns Steve Rogers, Bucky Barnes, and Natasha Romanoff to destroy the three Hydra-controlled Helicarriers 467. With S.H.I.E.L.D. compromised and under investigation, he accepts Noah's proposal to establish the Sentient World Observation and Response Department, an organization dedicated to extraterrestrial affairs and interstellar disputes 466 467 470.
Later leadership
Fury becomes a key intermediary between ordinary governments and the magical world. When officials discuss treating mages as a threat, he warns them that provoking the people who defended New York and reversed mass casualties would be catastrophic 620 622.
As Earth prepares for another large-scale conflict, Fury assists Noah's plan to create a mission system for training younger mages. Though initially baffled by the idea of recruiting game developers to design its quest structure, he accepts the plan and suggests involving Tony Stark 753 754.
Facing growing hostility from Western powers, Fury plans to relocate SWORD's base to the Moon. The Skrulls, led by Talos, are intended to settle there and help manage S.H.I.E.L.D. operations in Fury's place 762.
Appearance
Fury is a bald, dark-skinned man with a beard and an eyepatch over one eye 268 449.
- Often wears black clothing or S.H.I.E.L.D. attire.
- His one-eyed appearance is intimidating enough to frighten traumatized Mutant children 226.
- Lost his eye after being scratched by a Flerken he had trusted as an ordinary cat 209 457.
Personality
Fury is practical, guarded, and highly conscious of the limits of ordinary human power. His military and espionage background makes him wary of unequal intelligence, hidden threats, and organizations operating beyond government oversight 200 202.
He is initially overwhelmed by magic and alien life, but adapts quickly. Rather than treating Noah and Kamar-Taj as enemies, Fury recognizes their role in Earth's defense and gradually builds a working relationship based on caution, mutual usefulness, and respect 207 230 467.
Fury is capable of accepting criticism when it is justified. He acknowledges S.H.I.E.L.D.'s inability to protect Earth alone, accepts the danger of the Tesseract, and ultimately supports cooperation with the magical world 315 361 451.
