Nature and Characteristics
Outer Gods are not omniscient or omnipotent; they are beings that have reached an extreme on a particular path, with powers and limitations determined by their nature and lifeform 180.
- They are numerous, individually varied, and often confident in their ability to overpower mortal ritualists 270.
- Their power is treated as inherently volatile and chaotic. Prolonged exposure can mutate living beings, erode sanity, and reduce victims to destructive Demonic Creatures 218.
- Divine names carry power. Repeatedly naming an Outer God can attract its attention, even for High Wizards 234.
- Dimension Demon Gods are especially capable of interfering with the real world, while Evil Gods generally pay a greater price to act beyond their own Authorities 159 160.
- Outer Gods are generally stronger than orthodox gods of the same tier in direct combat 36.
- Although divine entities are difficult to destroy due to the concept of Eternity, this concept can be weakened or destabilized under exceptional circumstances 303.
Divine System
A complete deity possesses three central components:
| Component | Function |
|---|---|
| Divine Name | Serves as a ritual framework and can be used in spells and Divine Arts. |
| Divine Power | A low-consumption power attribute comparable to Authority in strength. |
| Divine Authority | The core source of a deity’s power; as long as it persists, Divine Power remains inexhaustible. |
These components allow deities to create Saints, develop Divine Arts, and establish churches that produce Transcendentals 293.
Unlike Wizards, gods cannot develop Authority Spells. Their Authorities are instead distinguished by their ability to be shared with Fanatic Believers and Affiliates without weakening the god itself 242.
Rituals and Transactions
Trading with Wizards
Outer God transactions are commonly conducted through rituals that connect a Wizard to a shallow layer of a god’s Dream Realm. Reaching this layer is generally enough to conduct a trade, while deeper layers are considered excessively dangerous 138.
- Mad Wizards usually request knowledge or power rather than asking an Outer God to directly interfere with the real world 160.
- A completed transaction theoretically conceals the Wizard’s identity from the Outer God; if the god knew the ritual host’s full identity, it could simply devour them during the ritual 160.
- This protection is imperfect. Outer Gods may use followers, cults, prior sacrifices, or other “off-the-field” means to identify a trader afterward 160.
- Repeated transactions with the same Outer God become increasingly dangerous as both sides learn one another’s methods 42.
- Most Outer Gods attempt to exploit loopholes in a ritual, overpower the host, or consume the trader rather than honestly fulfill the exchange 138 270.
Sleeping Outer Gods
Sleeping Outer Gods are favored targets among Mad Wizards because their reduced awareness makes transactions comparatively safer 138.
The Lord of Myriad Flesh and the White Whale are notable examples of Outer Gods known to remain asleep for extended periods while still responding to rituals or believers 99 160.
Known Outer Gods
| Name | Type / Domain | Notable Information |
|---|---|---|
| God of Black Orcs | Evil God | Holds Authorities associated with Black Night, Demonic Creatures, and Stars; receives the faith of Black Orcs despite lacking an Authority over their race 46. |
| Lord of Myriad Flesh | Dimension Demon God | A powerful, prime Outer God with unusually strong capacity to interfere with the real world; often sleeps and is frequently targeted by novice Mad Wizards 160. |
| White Whale | Deep Sea Evil God | Possesses power related to infinite growth and corrupts those who trade with it 100. |
| Eternal Secret Star Master | Mechanical Outer God | Transaction target of Isaac Solomon, who stole a portion of its Authority of Analysis during their contest 180. |
| Deep Sea Corroder Unor Ilivan | Deep Sea Evil God | Was compelled to repair the Infinite Demon God Armor during a transaction, then attempted to retaliate after recognizing Isaac 261. |
| Khorne / God of Courage | Evil God | Represents uncontrollable belligerence, madness, and bloodshed; has many seemingly valid rituals that conceal extremely low true success rates 43. |
| Dream Fairy | Outer God | Possesses a dream realm connected to the real world and is associated with crystals that accelerate dimensional growth 43. |
| God of Credit | Former Outer God | Later became a proper god, making its account-opening rituals substantially safer and simpler 186. |
| Yellinos | Outer God | Completed a ritual with Isaac and the Three-Eyed Goblin, granting Isaac dimensional data-storage capability and the innate spell Imaginary Number Creation 246. |
Relationships
- Mad Wizards — Their principal mortal transaction partners. Mad Wizards seek Outer God power and knowledge while developing rituals, anchor points, and other safeguards against corruption and retaliation 138 273.
- Isaac Solomon — Treats Outer Gods as exploitable sources of power, knowledge, materials, and ritual data. He repeatedly manipulates transactions to steal from them rather than trade honestly 46 69 260.
- Believers and Cults — Outer Gods establish churches and cultivate followers, priests, and Affiliates who can receive Divine Arts or shared Authority 242 293.
- True Gods — A related but distinct category. True Gods possess comparatively greater rights when controlled or enslaved, while some former Outer Gods can become orthodox gods 186 284.
- Terra Empire — The Empire’s Demigod Emperor has slain both an Outer God and a True God, but remains threatened by the possibility of several Outer Gods acting together 248 271.
Story Role and Major Arcs
Black Orc Conflict
Isaac first uses the God of Black Orcs as a ritual target to investigate the Black Orc High Priests. During the exchange, he secretly enters the god’s domain and steals forbidden necromantic knowledge instead of merely accepting its information 46.
He later exploits the God of Black Orcs’ automatic summoning mechanism by posing as a rat-people High Priest. The projected divine power annihilates nearly two thousand Black Orcs, causing the surviving Black Orc leadership to suspect that their god has betrayed them 53.
The God Thief’s Exploitation
Isaac’s God Thief Self Legend is founded on his repeated deception of gods and allows him to steal divine power to create or strengthen dependents 69 70. He subsequently uses Outer God power to advance Lapis Lazuli to Tier 3 without alerting the Lord of Myriad Flesh 214.
Battlefield Transactions
During the Floating Sea battle, Isaac turns Mechanical Cult Constructs into ritual sacrifices and uses an Outer God transaction as an offensive battlefield method. The resulting gaze frightens High Wizards and forces Miracle Wizards to halt their fighting and observe 260.
He later uses a transaction with Deep Sea Corroder Unor Ilivan to partially restore the Infinite Demon God Armor while secretly acquiring power from the Mysterious Void 261 262.
Enslavement Research
Isaac studies the possibility of enslaving Outer Gods by creating a medium capable of suppressing part of their power, comparing the intended mechanism to the Legendary Gate 284. His later Virtual Divine Spark experiments seek to create controllable deities while avoiding the inherent instability and corruption associated with genuine Outer God power 290 296.
