Background
Return to Truth awakened alongside Li Fan’s transmigration and became fused with his body. Li Fan initially could not determine whether it was an innate ability, a hidden treasure, or a Heavenly Earth Marvel suitable for Foundation Establishment 112. By the time he had undergone repeated cycles, he regarded it as inseparable from himself: the world reverted to a chosen anchor point while his own changes—especially those of his will and divine soul—remained 357.
Its early cycles were governed by anchor points, charging progress, and limited retention choices. Li Fan could preserve cultivation, a bound item, or other selected results from a completed life, allowing him to accumulate power and knowledge over successive reincarnations 164 216. Return to Truth also changed form within his dantian when Li Fan needed it to imitate the Nether Soul Hairpin’s properties 298.
As Li Fan’s cultivation rose, Return to Truth’s displayed power rose with it. It gained stronger defenses, a greater charging reserve, new functions such as Avici Reincarnation, and Divine Blessings such as Illusion is also Truth 1323 1406 1427 1491. Its behavior also became less passive: after absorbing the Three-pronged Tree, it independently initiated a world’s cycle of life and death without Li Fan’s command 1349.
Li Fan eventually concluded that Return to Truth possessed a purpose beyond serving him. It had selected him because his spirituality remained unusually intact despite repeated exposure to Truth and Falsehood, making him capable of enduring its endless returns 1465. He later inferred that it sought to return to a time before the Mortal World existed and avert the Dao Annihilation Calamity 1482.
After Three Daos Fusion erased its established anchors, Return to Truth entered a damaged, unstable state and later performed Mountain Sea-scale simulations 1530 1611. Li Fan ultimately learned that its activations consume his infinite true spirit to recreate Mountain Sea, rather than simply reversing a single fixed reality 1717. A later interpretation identifies its apparent “thoughts” as reactive experiences built from the vast memories of a former Li Fan, rather than the preserved consciousness of that past self 1739.
Appearance
Return to Truth has no single stable form. It normally manifests as an internal panel and as white mist that envelops reality during activation.
- Within Li Fan’s dantian, it once transformed into a form half Seven Aperture Exquisite Heart and half Nether Soul Hairpin 298.
- Its activation produces vast white or watery mist that obscures and freezes the surrounding world 1126 1384.
- When the Nine Saints forcibly extracted it from Li Fan in a simulation, its true form appeared as a smooth, blank jade tablet with no visible markings 1607.
- Its panel records anchor points, charging progress, bound items, Divine Blessings, and later assimilated Dao paths 421 1491 1760.
Personality
Return to Truth rarely communicates through words. It instead conveys emotions, cravings, warnings, fragmented panel changes, directions, and overwhelming streams of thought 1482 1561 1594.
Its conduct suggests self-preservation and a long-term objective. It guided Li Fan toward observing the Truth Celestial Venerable’s reincarnation, warned him against recklessly using Infinite Spirituality, and reacted with hunger toward objects or Dao paths it wished to consume 1465 1561 1694. It can also withdraw its emotional influence after recognizing that it has pushed Li Fan toward despair 1496.
Li Fan considers their connection a union of interests rather than unconditional trust. Although Return to Truth has repeatedly protected and empowered him, its independent actions and its consumption of his true spirit have made him increasingly wary 1482 1561 1717.
Abilities & Skills
Reality Rewind
Return to Truth turns reality into illusion and restores the world to a recorded anchor point.
- Resets the world, including powerful cultivators and True Immortals, while allowing Li Fan to carry selected changes forward 357 1156.
- Reverts Li Fan’s physical age and cultivation state to the selected anchor unless he chooses to inherit later gains 1129.
- Can be activated at the brink of death, as when Li Fan escaped Heavenly Doctor’s pursuit 1126.
- Its white mist slows or separates exceptionally powerful entities from the rewinding process, though such beings can sometimes still move within it 1303 1384.
Limits
- Activation requires Transformation of Emptiness charging progress; 100% is required for a standard return 1323.
- A surplus charge acts as a defensive buffer against outside interference 1323.
- Strong entities can sense, resist, or interfere with its operation, including the Faceless True Immortal and the entity behind the Void Realm 1127 1717.
- Li Fan’s own reluctance can prevent activation even when he attempts to invoke it 774.
Retention and Inheritance
After a cycle or simulation, Return to Truth presents selected rewards for retention.
- Early choices include retaining cultivation or a single item from the previous life 164 216.
- Later options can preserve a close Dao friend’s simulation result, a Mountain Sea change outline, or accelerate charging instead 1708.
- It eventually offers Li Fan the option to pass his memories to someone closely connected to him 1612.
- Its retention choices are limited; Li Fan cannot simply claim every reward from a simulation 1708.
Transforming into an Object
Return to Truth can preserve Li Fan’s true spirit within an external object.
- Li Fan used the Formation Breaking Jade Plate as his Incarnation Object and abandoned his body 415.
- This allowed him to survive for approximately three thousand years as an object before the next return 421.
- The function is used to extend observation time and gather future knowledge for later cycles 415.
Avici Reincarnation
A reincarnation-based punishment and observation function unlocked after Return to Truth absorbed the contents of the Soul Grinding Disc.
- Casts a target into a segment of Li Fan’s past life 1427.
- Li Fan used it on the Truth Celestial Venerable 1427.
- Repeated, unchanging reincarnations gradually shave away a subject’s spirituality and sever their future potential 1465.
True and False Authority
Return to Truth is tied to the True and False Change, an authority that Li Fan regards as standing above ordinary Dao paths.
- Its recurrent activations are equivalent to immense applications of Truth and Falsehood 1465.
- It assists Li Fan’s comprehension of the True and False Change, strengthening techniques such as his Wooden Sword Phantom Projection 1349.
- Li Fan can use Truth and Falsehood to create false things as real or erase existing things as false 1717.
- Repeated exposure to its authority leaves Li Fan unusually resistant to the negative effects of Truth and Falsehood 1717.
Divine Blessings
Return to Truth can bestow abilities directly, bypassing ordinary cultivation.
- Illusion is also Truth — Makes Li Fan share the Infinite Sea’s origin, preventing its pressure and detection from affecting him; it requires time before reuse 1491.
- Change From the Heart — Emerged after Lonely Sail was fed to Return to Truth; lets Li Fan transform paths of transcendence and later switch between Saintly identities 1594 1695.
- These blessings may become unusable or weakened while Return to Truth is dormant or unstable 1530 1594.
Simulation
When conventional anchors are unavailable, Return to Truth can construct and conclude simulations on the scale of Mountain Sea.
- Its first documented full simulation followed the destruction of its anchor points during Three Daos Fusion 1611.
- Simulations can reveal paths, dangers, and alternate outcomes without permanently overwriting the current Mountain Sea 1611.
- Some later results may overwrite Mountain Sea if Li Fan chooses the corresponding retention option 1708.
- Mountain Sea-scale simulation requires energy of comparable rank, such as the Great Dao of Longevity 1611 1612.
Relationships
- Li Fan — Vessel, user, and eventual wary partner. Return to Truth is fused with him and depends on his unusually resilient spirituality to sustain repeated returns 357 1465 1482.
- Truth Celestial Venerable — Subject of Avici Reincarnation; Li Fan used the resulting cycles to observe the erosion of the Celestial Venerable’s spirituality 1427 1465.
- Lonely Sail — Its true intent of transcendence was fed to Return to Truth, easing its hunger and contributing to the emergence of Change From the Heart 1594.
- Nine Saints — In a simulation, they recognized Return to Truth, forcibly extracted it from Li Fan, and held its jade-tablet form 1607.
- Children of Destiny / God Slaying Transformation variants — Derivative Return to Truth users whose limited versions are managed by Return to Truth as part of Li Fan’s plan 1766 1768.
Known Weaknesses and Risks
- Charging dependency — A normal return cannot occur until sufficient Transformation of Emptiness charge is accumulated 1323.
- Higher-power interference — True Immortals and entities beyond the Void Realm can perceive, slow, or obstruct activation 1127 1303 1717.
- Host dependence — Its greatest functions consume Li Fan’s spirituality or true spirit; a Mountain Sea recreation nearly drains him completely 1594 1717.
- Independent will — It can act without Li Fan’s command and may pursue its own hunger or objective 1349 1694.
- Finite reach — Li Fan eventually glimpses that Return to Truth has limits against the strongest powers of Mountain Sea, forcing him to rely more on his own strength 1496.
Trivia
- Li Fan originally named the treasure “Return to Truth” after recovering memories of its functions 1528.
- The artifact has been legendary since the ancient Immortal Realm, though it was considered too elusive for anyone to have confirmed its existence 1482.
- Its derivative versions carried by God Slaying Transformation variants initially reset only one possibility and have only one hundred uses 1766.
- If two such variants approach too closely, their Return to Truth abilities fail; one must kill the other and seize their fortune to restore the power 1766.
