Background / History
The Ten Thousand Immortals Alliance began as a loose alliance of New Method cultivators. Its rapid growth was fueled by the New Method's fast cultivation speed and the difficulty of permanently killing Nascent Soul cultivators whose Divine Souls remained intact. Though initially overwhelmed by forces affiliated with the Immortal Dao Ten Sects, its expanding numbers and battle-hardened survivors eventually made its rise unstoppable. 518 1420 1421
The Alliance's foundation is closely tied to the Heavenly Xuan Mirror, an immortal artifact said to have belonged to a descending True Immortal. According to one account, the artifact was seized when cultivators attacked the True Immortal before his return to the Immortal Realm. 213
Following the Law-Transmitting Celestial Lord's reconstruction of the organization, the Alliance implemented the New Immortal Calendar, using that reconstruction as its first year. Its detailed historical records are kept from the general public. 630
The Alliance governs much of the Profound Yellow World and has remained in prolonged conflict with the Five Elders Society. Their rivalry has driven the Alliance's defensive-array programs, purges of infiltrators, territorial wars, and later campaigns against Grotto-Heavens and Small Worlds. 184 269 752
Organization
| Department / Institution | Known function |
|---|---|
| Administration Hall | Registers members and assigns official posts. 186 |
| Martial Arts Hall | Handles security work and has been considered inadequate by some cultivators amid escalating conflict. 349 975 |
| Array Strategy Hall | Oversees formation-related work and recruits formation specialists. 477 |
| Heaven's Mystery Hall | Conducts investigations and celestial-secret surveys; its Nascent Soul-or-higher members were once summoned to headquarters. 101 472 |
| Garrison Academy | Maintains garrisons, participates in territorial defense, and seals ancient-sect ruins. 262 493 |
| Protector Hall | Holds the highest status among known departments; preserves the integrity of cultivation techniques and apprehends those connected to restricted arts. 175 336 413 |
| Heavenly Xuan Mirror | Processes internal transactions, distributes tasks and rewards, manages access permissions, and may possess greater authority than publicly acknowledged. 175 336 |
Each state branch possesses substantial autonomy. Headquarters generally does not intervene unless Alliance rules are broken or the Protector Hall is involved; however, all resource allocation and transactions must pass through the Heavenly Xuan Mirror. 175
The Alliance's ultimate leadership is unclear. The Law-Transmitting Celestial Lord is widely believed to have withdrawn from worldly affairs, while Li Fan speculates that unseen figures—or even the Heavenly Xuan Mirror itself—may direct the Alliance's true policies. 336
Membership and Merit System
Entry and official posts
Joining the Alliance grants access to the Heavenly Xuan Mirror and an initial Merit Point allotment. Li Fan received 100 Merit Points upon one entry, while another enrollment granted 1,000 points. 66 170
Official membership requires an assessment of loyalty and intentions through the White Jade Heart Questioning Platform. Successful applicants may receive an official assignment, an Identity Jade Disc, a Communication Spirit Talisman, and a Black Yellow Daoist Robe with basic defensive properties. 186 187
Entry into the Alliance's formal system is more restrictive. The regular assessment is held once every ten years and requires, among other conditions, thirty years of membership, Foundation Establishment cultivation or higher, and a useful specialty. 174 175
- Recommending new cultivators earns Merit Points and merits; the reward varies with the recruit's cultivation. 163
- Golden Core rogue cultivators face questioning and trial tasks before admission, even when they do not undergo the White Jade Heart Questioning Platform. 337
- The Alliance later ordered all cultivators within its territory to join within ten years. 420
- After the consolidation of its territory, it required all Alliance cultivators to practice the Mending Heaven Record to maintain the Heavenly Xuan Spirit Locking Formation. 421
Merit Points and permissions
Merit Points can be exchanged through the Heavenly Xuan Mirror for Spirit Stones, cultivation methods, magical treasures, and other resources. 66 170
| System | Details |
|---|---|
| Merit Points | Earned through tasks, contributions, item exchanges, recruitment, and official rewards; used to acquire resources. 66 163 186 |
| Merits | Ranked from highest to lowest as Heaven, Earth, Jia, Yi, Bing, and Ding, with upper, middle, and lower grades. 186 |
| Permission level | Determines which cultivation methods and items a member may view or exchange. 186 187 |
| Merit missions | Can reward both Merit Points and merits, allowing members to raise their authority. 186 |
| Annual assessment | Evaluates regional performance and can grant merits and Merit Points. 630 |
The system creates strong incentives but can also foster debt, speculation, and corruption. Following the Spirit Mist Grass crash, heavily indebted cultivators resisted or defected to the Five Elders Society, while the Heavenly Xuan Mirror issued numerous bounty missions. 198
Formations and Security
Ten Thousand Immortals Grand Formation
The Ten Thousand Immortals Grand Formation is a province-spanning protective formation. It is said to have killed Dao Harmonization Immortal Venerables, but its immense resource cost means it can only be activated with headquarters' authorization, typically during large-scale invasions by the Five Elders Society. 184
- Protective arrays undergo minor revisions every two hundred years and complete replacements every thousand years to prevent long-term exposure of their weaknesses. 184
- The Alliance builds protective arrays across cities in its territory as part of this broader defense network. 184
- Ancient formations are studied in part to reverse-engineer and improve modern Alliance formations. 184
Heavenly Xuan Spirit Locking Formation
The Heavenly Xuan Spirit Locking Formation is a territorial infrastructure project intended to cover every part of the Alliance's domain within thirty years. 336
- Its stated role includes identifying infiltrators through differences in Divine Sense, particularly cultivators affiliated with the Five Elders Society. 273
- The formation became central to the Alliance's response to the alleged Thousand-Faced Demon Lord, whose supposed possession techniques created widespread fear and mistrust. 349 350
- Critics questioned whether the formation could remain secure against the Five Elders Society and noted that it did not fully prevent the Thousand-Faced Demon Lord's attacks. 390
- Maintaining the completed formation was made a compulsory responsibility for all cultivators under Alliance rule. 421
Sky Patrol Arrow
The Sky Patrol Arrow is a mass-producible wartime weapon developed in response to the Five Elders Society's offensives. It can patrol the Alliance's territory in roughly one day, automatically lock onto suspicious targets, and strike from above. 842
- It can almost instantly kill cultivators below Dao Harmonization. 842
- Unprepared Dao Harmonization cultivators may be seriously injured by it. 842
- The weapon is intended to secure aerial dominance during wartime. 842
Policies and Practices
- The Alliance controls access to cultivation techniques, particularly powerful or Ancient Methods, through permissions and the Protector Hall. 187 413
- It has used public recruitment drives to gather formation talent, offering benefits equivalent to Array Strategy Hall formation masters and, for exceptional candidates, Dao Harmonization cultivation methods. 477
- The Alliance organized the Thirty-Three Immortal Chosen selection, promising selected cultivators the resources needed to reach Dao Harmonization within ten years. 856
- The Thirty-Three Immortal Chosen were later used to evolve Dharma Idols and draw out a Five Elders Society Longevity Celestial Venerable; all thirty-three died from exhaustion without explanation. 941
- The Alliance has concealed sensitive incidents, including denying the existence of the Lost Domain of Life and Death and warning witnesses not to discuss it. 709
- After upheaval at headquarters, it conducted a bloody purge that implicated many innocent cultivators. 1057
Relations
- Five Elders Society — Principal rival. The two powers contest territory, conduct espionage, and periodically wage open war. 184 269 828
- Law-Transmitting Celestial Lord — Associated with the Alliance's reconstruction and the New Immortal Calendar; publicly regarded as detached from ordinary affairs. 336 630
- Heavenly Xuan Mirror — Core artifact that administers transactions, missions, rewards, permissions, and member access. Its possible role in the Alliance's true leadership remains speculative. 66 336
- Immortal Dao Ten Sects — Historically suppressed the early Alliance, but the Alliance's New Method cultivators eventually became a force capable of challenging them. 518 1420
- Ten Thousand Realms Union — Later designated for extermination by the Alliance, prompting former beneficiaries such as Kou Hong and Dao Xuanzi to attack Alliance cultivators. 1129
- Saint Dynasty Great Qi — Seeks to infiltrate and gradually weaken the Alliance by placing cultivators into its entry examinations. 1201
Major Conflicts and Arcs
Conflict with the Five Elders Society
The Alliance's long-standing conflict with the Five Elders Society shapes much of its military and administrative policy. The Alliance has faced infiltrators at the highest levels, including Violet Sky Immortal Venerable, a spy who remained hidden for nearly a thousand years. 269
A Five Elders Society surprise attack later breached Alliance defenses and captured multiple provinces in seven days after a flaw in its protective array was exploited. 828 The Alliance subsequently recovered Nine Mountains Province through an unexplained but overwhelming counteroffensive, later revealed to involve the deterrence of a Law-Transmitting Projection. 884 886
Expansion into Small Worlds
The Alliance announced a plan to conquer the countless Grotto-Heavens and Small Worlds of the Profound Yellow World. The Heavenly Xuan Treasure Mirror was activated to guide cultivators to these worlds and reward their contributions, including after death. 752
The campaign suffered a major early defeat when an expedition encountered a powerful lifespan-absorbing cultivator; only Lu Zhixian survived. The incident triggered internal disagreement over how to respond. 762
War for “lost treasures”
The Alliance later publicly demanded that the Five Elders Society apologize for historical persecution and return alleged Alliance treasures. Though many cultivators regarded the declaration as a pretext, the Alliance quickly launched a real-time-broadcast offensive through the Heavenly Xuan Mirror. 939
Internal instability
The Alliance has faced recurring internal problems:
- Position-selling and local patronage networks operate openly in some branches. 175
- Some individuals connected to headquarters exploited their positions to manipulate the Puxian True Leaf market. 462
- The Thousand-Faced Demon Lord scare was used to intensify support for the Heavenly Xuan Spirit Locking Formation and proposals to reorganize the Martial Arts Hall. 349 350
- The Alliance's defensive systems were vulnerable to betrayal, as demonstrated by the Spirit Origin Sect's defection and the later exploitation of an array flaw. 820 828
Trivia
- The Alliance's official currency-like Merit Point system is described by He Zheng Hao as functionally similar to Spirit Stones, though it remains centrally administered through the Heavenly Xuan Mirror. 169 175
- Li Fan considered the Alliance's rules and order valuable protection after experiencing multiple lives within its system. 483
- Ten Thousand Immortals Island is strategically important enough that Li Fan avoided attempting to search it for treasures during a conflict, partly due to the presence of Gongsun Qixuan. 946
