But the nobles of Yar'kilantir, the royal family's directly governed territory, were somewhat different from all of them. They belonged neither to the royalist faction in the strict sense nor to the noble faction. They belonged to the military merit faction.

That was because most of them had earned merit through battles against the Empire before ultimately being elevated to nobility.

Thus, these people had not fallen as far as the great nobles within the Kingdom. They understood what mattered most in this perilous world.

Not territory!

Not a noble title!

And certainly not power!

It was real, tangible strength!
