Background / History

Tom Riddle grew up isolated and sought affection after learning of his Gaunt heritage. His first meeting with his uncle Morfin Gaunt ended with Tom using the Cruciatus Curse on him; Tom then decided to send Morfin to Azkaban and murder the Muggle man his mother loved. 198

Voldemort later became one of Dumbledore's most dangerous former students. He claimed that Dumbledore taught him that a wizard could gain extreme power by severing parts of the soul, and that he deliberately cut away his love for both his mother and Dumbledore. 146 His Horcrux research allowed him to survive bodily death, but repeatedly fragmented his identity into competing versions of Tom Riddle and Voldemort. 361 739
