Background / History
Tom Riddle grew up isolated and sought affection after learning of his Gaunt heritage. His first meeting with his uncle Morfin Gaunt ended with Tom using the Cruciatus Curse on him; Tom then decided to send Morfin to Azkaban and murder the Muggle man his mother loved. 198
Voldemort later became one of Dumbledore's most dangerous former students. He claimed that Dumbledore taught him that a wizard could gain extreme power by severing parts of the soul, and that he deliberately cut away his love for both his mother and Dumbledore. 146 His Horcrux research allowed him to survive bodily death, but repeatedly fragmented his identity into competing versions of Tom Riddle and Voldemort. 361 739
While inhabiting Quirrell, Voldemort secretly instructed Anton Weasley and cast undetectable spells to strengthen Anton's twin soul. His original plan was to use Dumbledore to separate Anton's soul, absorb it, and be reborn within Anton's body. 111 After this scheme failed, he alternated between Quirrell and a Runespoor host, offering Anton a place among the Death Eaters rather than immediately consuming him. 132 134
His later attempts at restoration relied on possession, Horcruxes, the Basilisk, the Philosopher's Stone, Death Eaters, and emotionally charged ritual magic. He possessed Filch to return to Hogwarts, absorbed the Basilisk's power, and repeatedly rebuilt himself after apparent defeats. 246 249 528 820
After acknowledging that he was Tom Marvolo Riddle rather than concealing his Muggle ancestry, he repositioned himself as a political ruler. He claimed Saint Riddle, sought influence over Hogwarts, promised to embrace half-blood and Muggle-born followers, and used the territory as a proposed base for creating Sub-Wizards. 739 He was eventually elected Speaker of the American Wizarding Congress and began building a transnational magical power structure. 984 1057
Appearance
Voldemort's appearance changes sharply with his body, Horcrux state, and degree of soul integration. He has appeared as a spectral, cracked, noseless remnant; a towering robed figure; a youthful and striking Tom Riddle; and a later white-haired middle-aged man. 181 214 934 1160
- Wraith state — Semi-transparent and covered in cracks filled with black lines; retains chaotic memories, magical power, and violent emotions even when lacking self-awareness. 181
- Runespoor possession — Can inhabit a three-headed Runespoor, which he considers more comfortable than Quirrell's body. 132
- Towering form — At one point appeared roughly two and a half metres tall, silent beneath billowing robes, with a pale hand resting on a young wizard's head. 214
- Restored Dark Lord form — Pale skin, high-bridged nose, short black hair, black eyes that occasionally flash red, and loose black robes. 739
- Young Tom Riddle — Tall and straight-backed, with styled black hair, dark eyes, a pale face, and an outwardly gentle, ambitious manner. 934
- Later form — Appears middle-aged with white hair during preparations to travel to Mars. 1160
Personality and Ideology
Voldemort is proud, theatrical, and intensely convinced of his own magical insight. He repeatedly lectures enemies and subordinates, taunts Dumbledore, and treats disagreement as proof that others cannot understand his superior path. 111 134 1136 His tendency to explain himself at length becomes a tactical weakness when Harry exploits it to complete the magic of hatred. 1136
His relationship with love is central to his instability. He originally regarded love as a weakness and claimed to have removed it from his soul for power, yet his attachment to Bellatrix eventually drives him to choose her life over retaining her love for him. 146 1146 His desire to unify the identities of “Tom Riddle” and “Voldemort” likewise motivates his decision to reclaim his birth name and publicly accept his mixed heritage. 739
Although he once advanced pure-blood interests and terrorized the European wizarding world, he later reframed his goal as “Riddle Supremacy”: a magical empire built through political influence, military power, Sub-Wizards, and the reorganization of international wizarding institutions. 1135 1004 1057
Abilities & Skills
Horcrux Creation and Possession
Voldemort is an exceptional Horcrux researcher whose fragmented souls preserve aspects of his identity and can sustain him as a wandering soul after bodily death. 552 976
- Possesses Quirrell, Runespoors, Filch, and a Boggart-derived body. 106 132 246 951
- Uses possession to alter or contaminate a host's body and soul, gradually pushing it toward his own form. 720 770
- Created Horcruxes carried through both soul-shell-based vessels and living bodies, including the diary and Harry Potter. 749
- Can implant a partial Horcrux into another soul, attempting to construct a three-intelligence Runespoor Animagus. 778
- His fragmented soul structure can become unstable; the competing Tom Riddle, Voldemort, and Runespoor intelligences leave him unable to reach a stable unified state. 739 852
Soul Magic
Voldemort regards himself as unmatched in the study of souls and uses soul-focused magic for manipulation, transformation, and resurrection. 111
- Secretly strengthened Anton's soul through spells Anton could not detect. 111
- Cast a soul-level Confundus effect on Anton that obscured memories and resisted ordinary countermeasures. 165 181
- Developed Tom's Mother's Embrace, a possession-related spell whose magical image Anton successfully mapped. 134
- Uses soul fragments, magical creatures, and host bodies as components in experimental life-creation magic. 778 954
Combat Magic
Voldemort is regarded as an extraordinarily dangerous duelist whose raw magical power can overwhelm ordinary wizards and intimidate seasoned Ministry officials. 110 373
- Casts the Killing Curse, Cruciatus Curse, Legilimency, and powerful wandless magic. 125 374 775
- Combines the Killing Curse, Cruciatus Curse, and Horcrux essence into a single soul-targeting attack. 778
- Masters flight and Apparition to such a degree that his movement resembles teleportation through space. 950
- Controlled a Basilisk and later absorbed its power, gaining extreme vitality and skin tough enough to resist the Gryffindor Sword. 178 249 251
- Can command Death Eaters through the Dark Mark and use the mark to locate summoned followers. 405 775
Ritual Magic and Resurrection
Voldemort repeatedly pursues methods of restoring a complete body and soul rather than relying solely on ordinary Horcrux survival. 134 976
- Considered the Philosopher's Stone and Anton's life force as possible routes to resurrection. 134
- Resurrected through Filch after possessing him in the Chamber of Secrets. 246
- Used Death Eaters under the Imperius Curse to reconstruct a physical body. 528
- Uses anguish, sacrifice, bloodline, prophecy, and love magic as variables in large-scale resurrection rituals. 950 951 954
- Maintains multiple wandering-soul manifestations through Horcrux-linked possession, including seven later bodies bearing his face. 1164 1167
Political and Military Leadership
Voldemort can turn fear, ambition, profit, and promises of status into organized loyalty. His ability to mobilize established families and institutions distinguishes him from other powerful individual wizards. 1057
- Rebuilt the Death Eaters around fear, personal loyalty, and the Dark Mark. 405 777
- Established the Magic Legion from people bound by trauma and contract magic. 1131
- Developed Obscurial bloodline wizard forces through the Magical Bloodline Research Institute. 1101 1157
- Became Speaker of the American Wizarding Congress and appointed former Death Eaters to major positions. 984
