The Misery of Central and Eastern Europe

Construction within Spain was proceeding in full swing. All manner of infrastructure projects and industrial zones drew crowds of Spaniards to watch.

From the moment these projects were launched, they provided Spain with vast numbers of jobs. Once the industrial zones were completed and factories relocated, industrial production would require large numbers of workers as well.

For Spain, this brought a hundred benefits and not a single harm. Over the next few years, Spain's economy would continue growing at a relatively rapid pace.

Compared with Spain, the rest of Europe had it far worse. Setting aside Britain and France, where the influenza had broken out earlier, the people of Central Europe and Eastern Europe suffered even more terribly than those of Western Europe.

Central Europe was not backward, but that depended on the time. In the Central Europe following the World War, industry had declined and the economy was a complete mess.

After the Entente Powers joined hands to carve up Germany's industrial equipment, all that remained of Germany's once-massive industry were insignificant scraps and leftovers.

Large numbers of Germany's heavy industries and military factories went bankrupt, leaving millions unemployed. Even without this influenza, the German Government would have struggled to deal with such an outrageous unemployment rate.

The influenza accelerated the chaos within Germany and drove domestic prices to an utterly staggering level.

Of course, there were other reasons for Germany's rapidly soaring prices. The foremost was that capital forces led by Jews were profiteering from national disaster while Germany was in peril.

Whether now or in the future, Jews had never enjoyed a particularly good reputation. The reason was simple: this people, famed for commerce, displayed a naked capitalist posture at every moment.
