Wilson's Troubles

As time entered 1921, the situation within the United States grew increasingly chaotic. Having emerged from the influenza crisis, the opposition Republican Party gradually bared its claws at President Wilson.

In truth, judging by President Wilson's achievements alone, he had not been a bad president. During his tenure, he had accomplished some practical things and had indeed acted with the aim of making the United States greater.

But the problem was that President Wilson's health was simply too poor. Coupled with being led around by the nose by the Entente Powers during the World War, President Wilson's personal prestige had fallen drastically and could no longer support his continued position as the nation's president.

Just how terrible was President Wilson's health? He had suffered his first stroke at the age of thirty-nine.

A stroke, also known as a cerebrovascular accident, could be divided into ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes. It was an illness caused by damage to cerebral blood vessels for various reasons, resulting in localized or widespread injury to brain tissue.

Strokes were marked by high incidence, disability, recurrence, and mortality rates. Even in later generations, they were diseases with extremely high fatality rates, let alone in the present era of relatively backward medical conditions.

Even as the US President, Wilson had been tormented by strokes until he wished he were dead. During his presidency, Wilson had experienced several episodes of unexplained weakness in his arms.

Through fundus examinations, doctors discovered abnormalities in his retinal arteries, but they could not find the direct cause.
