Background

Shi Jiu is the daughter of Shi Yuehan and Ning Ranxin. Her maternal grandparents, Ning Chengfeng and Yun Luoyu, were leading researchers who had previously worked for the Sequence Research Institute before leaving it for Tianhuang Martial Arts University. Her mother was regarded as Xia Country's foremost genius, but each of her nine children inherited part of her talent at the cost of her own abilities. Ning Ranxin had already died when Shi Jiu was born. 630

She grew up frail, pale, and emotionally distant. After returning to the Shi family, she remained detached from Shi Yuehan, who had not even retained her phone number; Shi Jiu blocked his calls. 148 160 Her grandparents’ deaths and the circumstances surrounding her mother became major motives behind her investigations into Tianhuang Martial Arts University, Lingyue Pavilion, and the Sequence Research Institute. 154 620 648

Before meeting Jiang Fu, Shi Jiu was recruited by the previous Nether Phoenix for her hacking ability and made the successor to the Nether Phoenix Token. The previous Nether Phoenix soon allegedly died in the Wilderness Area, leaving Shi Jiu with a title but little support; several Token members instead sought to kill her and seize the position. 563 The First Nether Phoenix later admits that Shi Jiu had been selected as a target for her soul-robes scheme. 658

Shi Jiu first encounters Jiang Fu in the Wilderness Area after being poisoned by a giant snake. She had found two Abyss Fruits, consumed one, and offered the other as payment for being taken away from the blood scent attracting Mutated Beasts. 19 Jiang Fu shelters and treats her, while Shi Jiu supplies a Spirit Cultivation Method and eventually agrees to support him if they survive. 22

Although initially aloof and detached, she becomes affectionate, mischievous, and openly protective around Jiang Fu. Shi Jiu is willing to be ruthless against hostile forces, but she is not indiscriminately cruel. After learning of Ning Ranxin’s death, she refuses Shi Yi’s proposal to kill the captives connected to the Ancient Cold Pass incident. 648
