Background

Tom Riddle was known as Hogwarts' most outstanding student in centuries. In his youth, he was handsome, gentle, patient, and skilled at understanding others; he formed the early core of the Death Eaters while still a student. Dumbledore alone remained suspicious of his façade. 87 145

After Hogwarts, Riddle sought the Defense Against the Dark Arts professorship, but Dumbledore refused him. He subsequently adopted the name “Voldemort,” attracted Pure-blood families to his cause, and later relied on Half-blood wizards and Dark creatures once those families were too entangled in his movement to withdraw. 144

Voldemort opened the Chamber of Secrets approximately sixty years before the present story, unleashed its Basilisk, caused Myrtle Warren's death, and framed Hagrid. 145
