Background

Tom Riddle was known as Hogwarts' most outstanding student in centuries. In his youth, he was handsome, gentle, patient, and skilled at understanding others; he formed the early core of the Death Eaters while still a student. Dumbledore alone remained suspicious of his façade. 87 145

After Hogwarts, Riddle sought the Defense Against the Dark Arts professorship, but Dumbledore refused him. He subsequently adopted the name “Voldemort,” attracted Pure-blood families to his cause, and later relied on Half-blood wizards and Dark creatures once those families were too entangled in his movement to withdraw. 144

Voldemort opened the Chamber of Secrets approximately sixty years before the present story, unleashed its Basilisk, caused Myrtle Warren's death, and framed Hagrid. 145

His pursuit of power followed two destructive paths: repeated Magical and Dark Arts Transformations, which altered his body, and the creation of multiple Horcruxes, which divided his soul. These choices elevated his Dark Arts to an unprecedented level but made him increasingly irritable, impatient, paranoid, and psychologically unstable. 87 232 257 729

Appearance

Voldemort's transformed and resurrected body is tall, thin, skeletal, and distinctly inhuman. His appearance reflects the accumulated consequences of extensive Magical Transformation. 35 56 517

  • Pale, bloodless skin. 35 517
  • Scarlet eyes. 35
  • Bald head and no lips. 517
  • No conventional nose; only narrow, socket-like nostrils. 35 517
  • Typically wears black robes after his resurrection. 514 574

Personality

Voldemort is driven primarily by power, self-preservation, and fear of death. He presents himself as a ruler, but shows little interest in governing the Wizarding World; his movement functions more as a vehicle for domination, terror, and personal status. 592

He is highly intelligent and exceptionally talented, but his reliance on Dark Arts and soul-splitting erodes his patience and rationality. He reacts intensely to setbacks, distrusts even close followers, and becomes especially agitated when his uniqueness or superiority is challenged. 65 87 324 574

Voldemort cannot tolerate equals. He repeatedly tries to recruit Andy Collins because he sees similarities between them, yet grows jealous of Andy's talent, appearance, and Dumbledore's favor toward him. 270 278 576 644

Abilities & Skills

Dark Arts Mastery

Voldemort is regarded as having gone farther into the Dark Arts than any other wizard. His Dark Arts are strengthened by his transformed body, fragmented soul, and exceptionally dark mindset. 144 257 576

  • Casts highly powerful Killing Curses capable of overwhelming ordinary wizards and Aurors. 114 574
  • Uses cruel and lethal magic without hesitation. 538 574

Magical and Dark Arts Transformation

Voldemort repeatedly modified his body to raise its magical capacity and compatibility with Magic Power. 56 233

  • Greatly enhances Magic Power, spellcasting fluency, and magical output. 56
  • Gives his body unusually high compatibility with Dark Magic and potentially with an Obscurus. 478
  • Leaves visible physical disfigurement and causes unstable Dark Power to remain within his body. 56 729
  • Does not make him invulnerable; his body can still be severed, damaged, or destroyed. 642

Horcrux Immortality

Voldemort split his soul and concealed fragments within Dark Arts items, allowing him to survive bodily destruction. 176 347

  • A surviving Horcrux allows his soul to persist even after the destruction of his body. 328 643
  • Horcrux fragments can influence others, possess hosts, absorb life force, and attempt independent resurrection. 251 263 279
  • Soul-splitting destabilizes his mind and body, making him more extreme and impatient. 232 574 729
  • His immortality collapses once the Horcruxes are found and destroyed. 682 684 687

Possession and Life-Force Manipulation

While bodiless, Voldemort can inhabit other people and exploit them as vessels. 98 329

  • His Horcrux fragments can absorb life force to regain strength or reshape a body. 251 263 279

Occlumency and Manipulation

Voldemort is skilled at concealing his intentions and manipulating fear, ambition, and insecurity. 87 270 671

  • Maintained a convincing model-student persona at Hogwarts, deceiving nearly every professor except Dumbledore. 87

  • Exploits Dumbledore's reluctance to sacrifice innocents. 99 329
