Inside a well-decorated building by the north gate of Duke White Tiger's Mansion, warm lighting illuminated every corner of the room with crystal clarity.
Moths continuously beat their wings beside the Soul Guiding Lamps, yet they could not pass through the glass covers. They could see that glimmer of light forever, but never touch it.
"Steward Wang, that's what happened. That little bastard somehow injured Chai San, then took the chance to run away."
Several tables and chairs stood in the modestly sized sitting room. Wang Cheng, the steward of the Firewood Room, sat there listening to his subordinates' report.
Six people stood before Wang Cheng, while one lay on the ground. Their clothes were all soaked through. The man lying down was particularly strange—aside from his drenched clothes, he had no other visible injuries, yet he remained unconscious.
Wang Cheng abruptly rose to his feet, his small eyes seeming to light up. "Are you absolutely certain that little bastard really struck someone?"
"He really did." The six Firewood Room servants nodded frantically.
A trace of delight flashed through Wang Cheng's eyes. He hurried toward a room behind a curtain in one corner of the sitting room. Before long, he arrived in a small chamber with few furnishings. However, a peculiar object sat atop a table against the wall.
The object was not large. Its base was a square metal body, like a metal block, its surface carved with strange Light Patterns. A faint glimmer could be seen flickering within it. On the left side of the metal body was a special wire extending upward and connecting to a frame above it. Resting on that frame was an extremely delicate, palm-sized rectangular "box."
After entering the room, Wang Cheng quickly pressed a red button on the side of the metal body.
At once, faint Soul Power fluctuations began to pulse inside the peculiar object, spreading invisibly outward like radio waves.
Wang Cheng then respectfully picked up the "box" from the frame and held it to his ear.
Time slowly passed. Wang Cheng stood honestly in place like a statue, even though the box showed no change whatsoever.
But half a minute later, a crisp "beep beep" sounded, and Wang Cheng's eyes immediately brightened.
A dark blue sheen suddenly appeared over the surface of the ordinary-looking box. Immediately afterward, a deep and impatient voice sounded. "What is it?"
Wang Cheng promptly replied with utmost respect, without any hesitation. "Second Young Master, that little bastard just attacked someone. After hitting him, he even ran away directly."
In that instant, Wang Cheng seemed to hear a heavy intake of breath from the other side of the box.
"I understand. You've done well." The deep voice rose slightly.
"Thank you for your praise, Second Young Master. It is only what this lowly one should do." Wang Cheng's face was fawning.
At that moment, the dark blue glow on the box vanished. Wang Cheng properly placed it back, and with a crisp click, the box was secured to the wooden frame. Energy seemed to flow into it from below.
"Good boy, you finally made your move. Our fortune depends on you." Wang Cheng excitedly rubbed his hands together. Then his smile faded, and he regained the stern demeanor he wore before his subordinates as he left the room and returned to the sitting room.
"Steward Wang, did the Second Young Master reply?" The servants hurriedly asked as soon as they saw Wang Cheng return.
Wang Cheng remained calm as he picked up a teacup with one hand and leisurely took a sip. "Don't worry. Follow this steward, and you won't lack benefits."
Upon hearing this, all six servants beamed and flattered him. "Of course. We all know how well Steward Wang treats us."
Wang Cheng glanced at them, then looked toward Chai San lying on the ground. He immediately frowned, but his brow soon relaxed, and his expression even took on a look of concern. "Quickly take Chai San for treatment. Put the treatment fees deducted on my account."
"Thank you, Steward Wang. This lowly one will immediately take Chai San to heal his injuries."
The servants hastily thanked him. Their already excited emotions grew even more fervent. They had bullied Huo Yuhao under the steward's orders. Now that they had been injured, not only had their superior not blamed them, he was even paying for their treatment. Following such a boss was the only way to have a comfortable path to wealth.
"Go on, go on. Otherwise, it'll be too late and the treatment room will close." Wang Cheng waved them off with a false smile.
"Yes. Please rest, sir. We won't disturb you any longer." The servants hurriedly supported Chai San, who remained unconscious, and left.
Once they had gone, Wang Cheng's smile instantly disappeared. With a sweep of his sleeve, he left the reception hall.
Duke White Tiger's Mansion was enormous. Although the Inner Mansion was only one-third its size, it housed every member of the White Tiger Family. At present, the White Tiger Family numbered around forty-three people. They all lived around the edges of the Inner Mansion, while only the duke himself and his family could reside in the most luxurious buildings at its center.
Inside one magnificent, palace-like building, a golden-haired youth wearing a Flame Fox Fur Robe sneered as he set down the Communication Soul Tool in his hand. He muttered to himself, "I thought you were a turtle hiding in its shell. You endured for so long, yet you still resisted in the end. This time, this young master will make you wish you were dead. That old fossil Chen Hongsheng won't be able to stop me now."
As he spoke, the youth calmly snapped his fingers. Before long, a wisp of gray air slowly gathered, then transformed into a figure that silently knelt on one knee before him. It was someone whose face was hidden beneath a gray robe, one of the mansion's Dark Guards.
A hoarse voice sounded. "Second Young Master."
"Go. Take some men and bring that bastard back. He must have run out of the mansion. With his Soul Scholar cultivation, he can't have gone far." The youth gave his orders in an indifferent tone.
"This subordinate obeys." The gray-robed man lowered his head in reply, then turned into a wisp of Gray Airflow and silently departed from the palace.
The youth stood and walked barefoot across the warm, furry carpet toward a glowing Crystal Table. He lowered his gaze, then picked up the only item on it—a special Soul Guiding Envelope. It could only be opened through a specific method; if forcibly opened, the letter within would immediately burn.
The youth's deep blue eyes had double pupils. His eerie gaze fixed on the envelope as his fingertips moved, sending a stream of white Soul Power into it. After a faint flash of white light, he unhurriedly opened the Outer Shell of the Soul Guiding Envelope and took out the letter inside.
But after reading its contents, his expression immediately became more urgent. "Big Brother has improved rapidly, and he is several years older than me. If this continues, the position of duke will surely be his in the future, and I won't have any chance at all. It seems I need to speak with Mother. I should report to Shrek Academy as soon as possible as well."
With that, the youth took the letter to the fireplace. Leaping flames reflected in his pupils. With a push of his finger, the letter fell into the roaring fire and was swiftly reduced to ashes.
His figure then left the palace.
