331st Division

The East African National Defense Army's 331st Division was responsible for military operations in this area. The 331st Division belonged to the Nile Military Region and was also that region's ace unit. In its early years, the 331st Division had already been one of East Africa's elite forces.

The 331st Division emphasized training in all kinds of harsh environments, including rainforests and mountains. Its garrison was located in the western part of the Nile Military Region. Before the East African Army expanded, the 331st Division had been one of the five fully staffed divisions in East Africa aside from the Guard Division.

The divisional headquarters was stationed in Bangui city, the capital of Azande Province. Therefore, the division's southward reinforcement of Kinshasa mainly traveled along the Ubangi River before transferring onto the main channel of the Congo River, making transportation extremely convenient.

To the north of the 331st Division lay the Sigmaringen Royal Territory, while Belgian Congo lay to its west. The two countries currently had good relations with East Africa, so the military pressure was relatively low. This provided the conditions for the 331st Division to move south and support the Angola battlefield.

With the beginning of the western front counteroffensive, the 331st Division had successfully crushed the Portuguese Army outside Kinshasa and taken over the city's defenses.

With the Kinshasa crisis resolved, the 331st Division also intended to reap greater merit in the war. Striking deep into the Angola Colony—namely, the Atlantic coast of western Angola—was undoubtedly the key to ending the war as quickly as possible.

Kinshasa City subsequently became the temporary command post of the 331st Division headquarters.
