Churchill's inauguration as Prime Minister was very simple. On the very day George V approved Asquith's resignation, Asquith moved out of the Prime Minister's residence, and Churchill began carrying out the duties of Prime Minister.

All members of the Cabinet remained in office. Besides serving as Prime Minister, Churchill also concurrently served as First Sea Lord. However, Churchill focused most of his efforts on homeland defense. His first order after taking office was for the army to expand further, intensify its training, and prepare for battle. Defensive positions were to be built in major cities and transportation hubs. Coastal defenses were to be established at places where the Germans might land, making preparations for the coming war.

Churchill also worked hard to secure the support of the royal family. On the evening he assumed the office of Prime Minister, he went to Buckingham Palace and explained his views to George V.

Therefore, we can no longer prevent the Germans from occupying the entire ocean. As can be foreseen, the Germans will use the seas to launch an attack against the homeland of the British Empire," Churchill said.
