"Sir, South Africa is too close to the Germans, Australia too far away, and India too underdeveloped. Therefore, Canada is our best retreat! Although, if the Germans only sent one million men to attack the British mainland, there was a good chance we could hold off their assault, we had to prepare for the worst. If the mainland could not be defended, I hoped we could withdraw to Canada and continue fighting!" Churchill said to British Foreign Minister Sir Edward Grey.
The German military was too powerful. Even if they sent only one million men to attack the British mainland, Churchill still had no absolute confidence that they could hold it. What was more, no one could guarantee that, after they had held off one million German troops, Germany would not send even more forces to Britain. After all, Germany would certainly go all out to secure final victory. With the other battlefields already concluded, the German military could now concentrate its main strength against Britain. By comparison, the British military was truly in a dreadful state.
"Prime Minister, I understand. I will do everything in my power to make the arrangements. I will communicate with the Americans as much as possible. However, the Americans' demands this time will likely be numerous and excessive!" Sir Edward Grey said.
Churchill nodded. "If even our mainland falls and we are truly driven into a corner, then no matter how excessive the Americans' demands are, we can only accept them!"
"In other words, no matter what demands the Americans make, we must agree to them?" Sir Edward Grey frowned.
"Do our utmost to secure the best possible terms!" Churchill sighed.
