Jacob, the German ambassador to Switzerland, had been riding high these past days. As Germany won victory after victory on the battlefield, his back grew straighter by the day. Almost everyone believed that Germany's victory in this war was already beyond doubt. Germany replacing Britain as the new world hegemon was likewise as certain as ironclad fact.

Countless nations wanted to curry favor with Germany, the new world hegemon, so Jacob, as the ambassador to Switzerland, naturally received lavish flattery from envoys of every country. In particular, nations that had not been very friendly toward Germany during the war were all eager to take this opportunity to mend their relations with Germany, lest Germany settle scores with them after winning the war.

"Your Excellency, the Island Nation's ambassador wishes to meet with you," the secretary said to Jacob.
