This was the closest point on the British mainland to the European continent, and also the crown jewel of the British Army's homeland defenses. Dense defensive fortifications had already been built along the beach. Trenches, barbed wire, landmines, and firing positions were everywhere.
Over the past few months, the British had thoroughly turned this place into a fortress. On one hand, this demonstrated their determination to defend their homeland. On the other, it revealed their fear. After all, their opponent was the world's number one German Army. Whether they could withstand the German attack was something the British Army, from top to bottom, had no confidence in at all.
Although the British Army's total strength had expanded to more than four million men, only a little over three million could be armed. The remaining troops possessed no decent weapons to speak of. Even those units that had been armed were severely lacking in heavy weapons. Only a small number of elite units were relatively well equipped. But even so, facing the formidable and elite German Army would still be no easy task.
Several cars drove onto Dover's beach, yet the shore was completely deserted. The weather was too hot, and the soldiers had all hidden in the shade; no one would remain on the beach. Normally, Dover would be thronged with tourists in summer, with countless people coming here to enjoy the beach and sunshine. But with the clouds of war hanging over the entire British Isles, no one had the leisure for such things anymore. Everyone hoped the war would end sooner, so they would no longer have to suffer its ravages.
Several people stepped out of the cars. At their head was a tall man, Britain's current Prime Minister, Churchill. At his side were Minister of
