Chapter 45: Fields Medalist Peter Scholze's Attention
Evans continued reading the paper, but since he hadn't understood the beginning, the latter part was naturally even more difficult. So, he gave up on trying to comprehend the paper. After quickly confirming that it met formatting standards, he got up to report the matter to Editor-in-Chief Bojielun.
He knocked on the editor-in-chief's office door. Upon seeing Evans, Bojielun said with a smile, "Evans, it looks like you've finished your task."
With that, Bojielun stood up, pulled a 50 Euro note from his pocket, and handed it to Evans.
At the same time, he asked, "How did you write your rejection email?"
Evans calmly accepted the 50 Euros and replied, "I didn't write a rejection email."
Hearing this, Bojielun reached out to take the 50 Euros back from Evans's pocket. "Then give me the money back."
Evans sidestepped, staring intently at Bojielun, and said, "And I've already prepared to contact Peter Scholze or Jacob Stix to review this paper."
Bojielun froze, then threw his hands up in exasperation. "Are you crazy? If they knew we asked them to review a paper written by a high school student, they'd probably mock us mercilessly at the Mathematics conference!"
Seeing Bojielun's reaction, Evans was certain he hadn't read the paper.
"My dear Editor-in-Chief, you haven't read this paper before?"
Bojielun replied, "Please, I'm currently reading Professor Tracy's paper and don't have time for this kind of thing. A high school student, even a genius, how good could their paper be? This is IHES! Let alone a high school student, if an undergraduate published a paper here, unless someone proved the Riemann Hypothesis, it would be the biggest news in the mathematics world this year."
Evans immediately started laughing. "In that case, it seems your judgment was mistaken, Mr. Bojielun."
"This paper might actually be publishable in our journal."
Bojielun's eyes widened. "Are you sure you're not joking?"
How could this be possible?
It was already outstanding for a high school student to write a complete paper, and now you're telling me it actually has a chance of being published in their journal?
A top-tier journal in the mathematics world?
"Let me see."
Immediately, Bojielun returned to his computer and found the paper in the backend system.
He squinted and began to read. Ten minutes later—he gave up.
He couldn't understand almost anything. The knowledge involved in the paper was completely different from his research area, especially Far Abelian Geometry, which he knew absolutely nothing about.
Although he couldn't understand the content, his years of experience as an editor for mathematics journals allowed him to see from the writing style that the author was extremely professional.
"You were right."
Bojielun exclaimed in admiration, "There really are such mathematical geniuses in the world."
His old friend Hu Guangde hadn't lied to him.
After thinking for a moment, he said, "Alright, as you suggested, we'll send this paper to Professor Scholze and Professor Stix. Regardless, it still needs expert review to see if it can be published in our journal—but are you sure they'll be willing to review it?"
Peter Scholze, the new star in the mathematics world, a recipient of the 2018 Fields Medal.
Jacob Stix, an authority in Far Abelian Geometry and an expert in arithmetic algebraic geometry.
Evans patted his chest and said, "They will definitely be willing to accept."
"Fine, let's ask Scholze first if he's willing."
Bojielun nodded, then opened the journal's contact information and found Scholze.
After dialing, he explained his reason for calling.
"Oh? A paper on Far Abelian Geometry?"
Scholze, on the other end of the line, became immediately interested after Bojielun's introduction to the paper. "Since the author dared to submit it to IHES and you're asking me to review it, this paper must be quite good."
"Indeed, I haven't seen any excellent papers on Far Abelian Geometry published recently. Please send it over, Mr. Bojielun, and I'll try to give you a response within two to three weeks."
"Thank you so much, Mr. Scholze. I'll send it to you right away."
Bojielun replied with a smile.
Without further ado, he hung up the phone and immediately sent the paper to Scholze.
Bojielun remarked with emotion, "Well, I never expected Scholze to accept the paper so readily."
Evans thought for a moment and guessed, "Perhaps it's because of Shinichi Mochizuki's paper proving the abc conjecture?"
"Oh? You mean that Japanese fellow?" Bojielun raised an eyebrow. "I recall Scholze and Stix co-published an article in 2018 refuting his proof of the abc conjecture, though he disagreed."
"Yes," Evans nodded. "And before Shinichi Mochizuki published his paper proving the abc conjecture, he wrote over 700 pages on Far Abelian Geometry. So, I suspect Scholze is interested in this paper because he wants to find definitive evidence that Shinichi Mochizuki is wrong."
Bojielun froze and hesitated, "It shouldn't be... right? Mochizuki's paper was published in 2012, and to this day, no one can definitively say he's wrong. And this paper is just written by a high school student..."
Evans was silent for a moment. "Perhaps?"
"Hahaha, that's highly unlikely," Bojielun chuckled.
It seemed impossible no matter how he thought about it.
Otherwise, their confidence would be shattered.
He immediately changed the subject. "Speaking of which, that 50 Euros... shouldn't you give it back to me? And then you owe me 50 Euros?"
Evans's expression changed, and he turned to leave. "What 50 Euros? I don't know anything. I have to go to work."
He then quickly left the office.
Bojielun chuckled and shook his head, but he didn't bother about the 50 Euros, as he had intended to give it to Evans anyway.
Now that this paper had entered the expert review stage, it was also a form of closure for his old friend Hu Guangde.
He then put the thought aside and continued with his own work.
As for whether Xiao Yi's paper could truly become the "final spear" to end Shinichi Mochizuki's paper, he quickly forgot about it.
In any case, there was absolutely no possibility of that.
