Background / History

Genryūsai founded the Genji School and its Genryū swordsmanship before establishing the Gotei 13. He later sought to build an academy that combined noble resources with opportunities for talented commoners to enter the Gotei 13, despite noble opposition. 58 62

Araki trained under him for decades, mastered every technique Genryūsai taught, and received the full Genryū transmission. During Araki's graduation challenge, he left a permanent scar on Genryūsai's forehead. 3 128 Genryūsai nevertheless continued to regard Araki as his disciple, alternately calling him “foolish” or “unfilial” while openly taking pride in his potential. 5 16

As Captain-Commander, Genryūsai recognized that the First Generation Gotei 13—effective in war but defined by slaughter—could become a danger in peacetime. He allowed Araki to take responsibility for them, but warned that he would personally destroy them if Araki failed to control them. 56

Behind his severity, Genryūsai is protective of his students and subordinates.
