Daxing County Yamen.

Just after three in the afternoon, Wei Shougen quietly arrived at the East Wing Courtyard where the clerks worked. After looking around and making sure no one was nearby, he darted toward the first office at the eastern end as fast as he could.

When he reached it and tried to push the door open, he found that it was locked from the inside.

In broad daylight, why the hell was the door locked?!

Wei Shougen cursed under his breath. Just as he was about to knock, he heard someone inside call out sharply, "Who? Who's outside?"

"It's me, Record Official Yang—Wei Shougen!"

Wei Shougen answered in a low voice. He then heard rustling from within, though he had no idea what was going on.

After waiting roughly the time it took to drink half a cup of tea, the door finally opened, and a delicate, bashful young man emerged.

Seeing Wei Shougen standing outside, the youth lowered his head and called softly, with endless coyness, "Wei Bantou," then turned sideways to make way for him.

No wonder they had locked the door in broad daylight!

This youth was a newly recruited yamen runner. Because he looked frail and delicate, he had suffered plenty of bullying at first. Later, however, he had gotten involved with Record Official Yang and turned around to deal harshly with those who had bullied him.

Though Wei Shougen, as the head of the yamen runners, often threw his weight around as well, he truly looked down on this sort who sold his backside.

He shot the youth a disgusted glare and could not be bothered to speak to him. He barged straight into the room and locked the door behind him again.
