Background / History

Jia Baoyu is the heavily indulged young master of Rongguo Mansion. He initially disdains scholarship, official careers, and “economic” pursuits, preferring tales of generals, knights, unusual events, and the company of women. Lin Daiyu persuades him to undertake martial instruction after warning that he must not become a burden to the girls around him 21 32.

His first major act of responsibility comes after Zhineng'er is murdered. Though horrified by the corpse and briefly fainting at the sight of a severed head, Baoyu personally arranges a coffin, mourners, priests, a feng shui master, and a Water and Land Ritual for her burial 65 66 67.
