Background / History

Post-war recovery and Minato's accession

Following the end of the large-scale war, Konoha's surviving shinobi returned from the battlefield while its residents began looking toward a less brutal period of scattered conflicts rather than full-scale war. Minato Namikaze was inaugurated as the Fourth Hokage amid a village-wide celebration meant to dispel the lingering shadow of war. 7 8 9

The Fourth Hokage expanded the village's pool of high-level personnel by promoting qualified war veterans to Special Jonin through combat assessments. These shinobi were considered for further assignments, including the Fourth Hokage's Shadow Guard. 11 16

Escalating inter-village tensions

Konoha's operations against rogue Mist shinobi led to a confrontation with Suikazan Fuguki's Kirigakure force, which challenged Konoha's right to hold captured rogues and denied responsibility for attacks on Konoha's border outpost. 25 27

Later incidents involving Samehada, Ao's Byakugan, and mysterious attackers suspected of possessing Uchiha and Uzumaki abilities made both Kirigakure and Kumogakure regard Konoha as a primary suspect. Konoha refused to yield to these accusations. 111

When Kirigakure launched surprise attacks, Konoha was forced into renewed war against both Kirigakure and Kumogakure. Its border forces suffered severe losses against Killer Bee, the Eight-Tails Jinchuriki, until reinforcements led by Jiraiya arrived. 139 140

The Nine-Tails Uprising

Konoha was especially vulnerable while much of its military was deployed and Kushina Uzumaki was nearing childbirth. Obito infiltrated the village through space-time ninjutsu, targeted Kushina, and moved to seize control of the Nine-Tails. 177 180

The resulting crisis compounded Orochimaru's attack on the village. The Fourth Hokage returned from the front, prepared to save Kushina and Naruto, and eventually resealed the Nine-Tails through the Four Symbols and Eight Trigrams Sealing Styles. 183 187

The attack left nearly half of Konoha destroyed, caused extensive civilian and shinobi casualties, and displaced residents from ruined districts. 192

Political upheaval

With the Fourth Hokage incapacitated after the crisis, Danzo attempted to exploit the power vacuum by promoting a Hokage Representative position. The Third Hokage secured Jiraiya's overwhelming selection as acting leader instead. 200 201

Danzo subsequently fueled distrust of the Uchiha Clan while concealing experiments involving First Hokage Cells and Sharingan. The Uchiha's confrontation with Root exposed the secret facility after it exploded, leading to Danzo's defection. 204 207

In the aftermath, the Third Hokage admitted his role in approving the experiments, while the two consultant elders relinquished their decision-making authority to reduce suspicion. 207

War against Akatsuki

Konoha joined the other Great Ninja Villages in organizing a coordinated assault on Akatsuki in the Land of Rain. The combined force included the Third Hokage, the Uchiha Clan's forces, elite Jonin, and Kage-level fighters from the allied villages. 281

After later threats from Akatsuki and powerful entities described as “gods,” Konoha became the center of a fully united shinobi alliance. Other countries and smaller ninja villages also joined the coalition. 324

Akatsuki's final offensive struck Konoha from multiple directions. Nagato entered the village and used Almighty Push to destroy it, while the alliance attempted to protect the Tailed Beasts and repel the invading forces. 326 331 332

Following the war, the Five Great Ninja Villages signed a peace treaty in Grass Country and agreed not to invade one another. Konoha later hosted a large public celebration for Hyuga Yei's wedding. 363
