Awooo—
A military camp at the border of Louisiana and Texas.
Wolf howls rose and fell through the dense woods and mountains, like a pack communicating before a hunt.
"Sir, did... did you hear that?"
A soldier in conspicuous red clothing asked tremulously.
The officer gathered his courage and feigned calm. "What are you afraid of? A lord of the Order of Saint George is stationed right here in the camp. If those overconfident wolf pups dare launch a sneak attack, they'll never return!"
"Our uniforms are too conspicuous. Those mainland troops have long since changed into new-style uniforms, but only our colonial division is still wearing these old ones."
During the Boer War, the empire on which the sun never set had suffered badly from Boer guerrilla warfare, so it began replacing the traditional red uniforms it had used for over two centuries. But that wind of change had clearly not yet reached the Thirteen Colonies.
The Thirteen Colonies had long since ceased to consist of merely thirteen states. They had successively annexed New France and the Louisiana Governorate, driving all foreign colonial powers from the North American East Coast.
Now, the only enemies the armed forces of the Thirteen Colonies had to face were natives and savage beasts of the wilderness. There was simply no need to prioritize issuing new equipment.
"Heh, those wolf pups have sharp eyes. Day and night make no difference to them. What uniforms we wear makes no difference either."
A Redshirt rubbed the silver cross in his hand and muttered, "Not all Texans are wolves. Those Hispanics, natives, French from Louisiana, and Dixie people don't see us as saviors who came to liberate them."
"Enough nonsense. Stay alert. Once the enemy attacks, I'll immediately notify the boys from the Armored Battalion. Their chainsword
