Background and History
Habsburg second son
Lothar was born into the Habsburg family as Count Werner von Habsburg's younger son. His mother, Lady Elise, had died from illness a year before the beginning of the story. Under primogeniture, Lothar had little prospect of inheriting land; his practical choices were knighthood under another lord or monastic life. 1 2
A transmigrator with memories of a previous life as a game developer, Lothar recognized the System's mechanics and its retainers from his former work. He chose the Crusade as the path most likely to win him land, reputation, and influence rather than accept an unremarkable life as a dependent knight. 3
Count Werner knighted Lothar and ordered him to represent the family in the new Crusade. Though disturbed by the moral premise of a holy war fought in foreign lands, Lothar accepted the duty and departed for the Holy Land with his retainers and squires. 2 4
Rise in Jerusalem
Lothar gained renown during a tournament in Lienz, where he treated defeated and impoverished knights generously. He later defeated the werewolf Avelardo in the final, earning the Champion Knight, Demon Hunter, and Witch Hunter milestones. 14 16 17
After arriving in the Holy Land, he impressed Baron Godfrey of Ibelin and King Baldwin IV with both his military competence and political eloquence. Baldwin came to regard him as a trusted aide, while Lothar steadily built a personal force around System retainers, recruited soldiers, and elite cavalry. 30 32 44
Baldwin IV rewarded Lothar's capture of a regional governor's castle by granting him the barony and royal territory of Yoglusburg. Lothar immediately began rebuilding the neglected fief, expanding its defenses, training troops, and establishing specialist military units. 45 50 51
Count of Outremer
Lothar became Grand Commander of the Royal Knightly Order and publicly called for unity against Saladin, despite hostility from Guy of Lusignan and other nobles. 61
He later rose to Count of Outremer and Lord of Hebron. Rather than merely inherit Reynald's troubled domain, Lothar sought oaths from its vassals, improved its military capacity, developed workshops, and used political pressure against hostile local magnates. 132 133 136 204
Imperial ascent
Lothar's authority expanded beyond Jerusalem through campaigns, Combat Records, military reforms, and alliances. He became Grand Commander of the Teutonic Knights, merged their clerical branch into the Saint Lazarus Redemption Order, and converted selected knights into Imperial Knights. 270 271
He later received the title of Basileus and Imperial Vice-Emperor, became Governor of Cyprus's military district, and refused Empress Lageia's proposal to co-rule the Empire in favor of an alliance on his own terms. 834
After his accession as emperor, he founded the Overseas Empire and received the allegiance of his vassals while preparing to shift the empire's focus from war toward peace and development. 901 904
Appearance
Lothar is repeatedly described as a young, handsome Habsburg noble whose appearance differs sharply from Count Werner's harsher features. As his rank and power grow, his bearing becomes increasingly regal; observers often mistake his presence for that of a king. 1 61 181 638
- Tall, handsome, and usually clean-featured, with an approachable smile that contrasts with his reputation as a formidable lord. 181 406
- Commonly appears in bright plate armor, a black cloak, and Habsburg heraldry, including the Double-Headed Eagle. 61 145 181
- His transformed state manifests golden eyes, black scales, horns, broad fleshy wings, and a draconic aura. 316
- At full power, his True Dragon form can exceed 300 meters in length. 924
- Has used a temporary werewolf disguise that gives him wolf ears, paler skin, and a softer, more androgynous appearance. 503
Personality
Lothar is ambitious, but he distinguishes ambition from blind acquisition of power. He seeks to establish a Habsburg dynasty and expand his authority, yet rejects alliances or marriages that would compromise his freedom of choice. 301
His early discomfort with the Crusade develops into a personal ideal of lordship: protecting subjects, rewarding merit, and refusing to target the defenseless. He is willing to use force, deception, intimidation, and assassination against enemies or disloyal subordinates, but does not consider slaughtering unarmed civilians acceptable. 18 35 136 204
Lothar is politically perceptive and often wins allies through generosity, money, rewards, and personal recognition. He also understands that his position has changed him: despite his polished public image, he acknowledges that power has made him more ruthless and pragmatic than the landless knight he once was. 72 145 415
Abilities & Skills
System and Retainer Summoning
Lothar possesses a game-like System that grants milestones, attribute points, card draws, templates, equipment, buildings, and loyal retainers.
- System retainers are bound by absolute loyalty and cannot directly harm him. 11 34
- He can share one of his Talents with a retainer and can gain Talents from retainers with sufficient intimacy. 16 51
- His System resources enabled the formation of elite forces including Winged Hussars, Varangian Guards, Cataphracts, and the Kheshig Company. 51 59 99 638
Dragonbloodline and True Dragon Transformation
Lothar's defining power is his evolving dragon bloodline, which augments his body, fire magic, presence, resilience, and transformation capability.
- Half-Dragon Transformation grants scales, horns, wings, enhanced physical power, and stronger Dragon's Breath, though he initially could not fly. 316
- True Dragon Transformation produces a colossal dragon form protected by Dragon Qi and highly resistant to hostile magic. 637 642
- His dragon aura can terrify weaker supernatural beings and overwhelm opponents before combat begins. 518 536
- His dragon form is exceptionally durable in close combat but has been identified as more vulnerable to ranged attacks. 632
Blood Magic
After sharing Fringilla's Blood Magic Specialization, Lothar became a close-range blood mage whose spells reinforce his physical fighting style.
- Bloodfall accelerates his blood flow to multiply speed and strength for a short time. 51 69
- Blood Spear infects an enemy's blood with magic and can trigger a Blood Burst. 51
- Bat Form briefly transforms him into a vampire bat. 51
- Immunity nullifies vital points, prevents bleeding, and permits damage negation through consuming blood. 51
- His blood magic is constrained by available magic power; using Bloodfall can leave insufficient mana for other spells. 69
Stone Wall and Defensive Talents
Lothar's defensive abilities allow him to survive attacks that would normally kill him.
- Stone Wall grants temporary immunity to physical damage; it has withstood werewolf strikes, dragonfire, arrows, and blades. 16 260 539 621
- Two Lives originates from his merged souls and permanently increases his maximum Spirit by five. 16
- Thorns All Around provides damage reduction and reflects damage to attackers. 546
- Iron Body, acquired through dragon-blood enhancement, further reinforces his already exceptional durability. 546
Fire and Holy Magic
Lothar combines dragonfire, learned sorcery, and holy artifacts in battle.
- Can cast fireballs and stronger flame spells enhanced by his draconic and volcanic power. 360 644
- Dragon's Breath is his principal finishing technique, capable of incinerating foes such as Viktor. 316 536
- Can employ Holy Radiance through the Holy Lance despite the incompatibility normally expected of werewolves and dark creatures. 518 621
- Used Dragon's Breath and Summon Wind to destroy an attacking galley fleet outside Acre. 235
Martial Skill
Lothar began as a trained knight and developed into an elite swordsman, lancer, and mounted commander.
- Won repeated tournament bouts and defeated the werewolf Avelardo through endurance, timing, and improvisation. 14 16
- Fights effectively with sword, lance, spear, shield, and mounted charges. 15 155
- Learned Witcher swordsmanship, including its broad cuts and refined footwork, then defeated Geralt, Eskal, and Lambert. 459
- Uses Beast Intuition to react to attacks before consciously perceiving them. 155 459
Command and Military Administration
Lothar is an aggressive organizer of armies as well as a frontline commander.
- Prioritizes heavy cavalry, disciplined formations, armor quality, and permanent military infrastructure. 44 50
- Personally equips and promotes soldiers based on merit rather than birth, including Hans, Fabio, and Teutonic Grand Knights. 50 160 271
- Created the Kheshig Company by granting selected soldiers weapons, mounts, combat skills, and horsemanship through System blessings. 638
- At the height of his Outremer mobilization, commanded more than 10,000 troops from his direct lands and vassals. 392
