The Dou Qi stages precede the Dou Zhe realm. Xiao Se's cultivation provides the following documented example:

Cultivation

• Realm order: Dou Qi is followed by Dou Zhe, Dou Shi, Great Fighter, Dou Ling, Dou Wang, Dou Huang, and Dou Zong 311.
• Absorption and refinement: A cultivator draws in Dou Qi and refines it within the body. During Xiao Se's breakthrough, absorbed Dou Qi combined with the energy of Qi Gathering Powder before entering his cyclone 5.
• Dou Qi Cyclone: Condensing a cyclone marks the breakthrough to Dou Zhe. Dou Zhe cultivation also grants inner vision, allowing a cultivator to observe the cyclone 5 252.
• Liquefaction: During Xiao Se's breakthrough to Dou Shi, droplets of liquid formed within his shrinking Dou Qi Cyclone 48.

Properties and Uses

• Attributes: Dou Qi can have elemental attributes. Xiao Se's was initially fire with a trace of wood; after refining the Ice Fire Dragon Flame and the Dragon Kings' Soul Bones, it also gained an ice attribute. Zhu Zhuqing's Dou Qi tested as dark-attributed 6 160 169.
• Cultivation methods: Methods refine Dou Qi and can change its characteristics. Xiao Se's Dou Qi turned faint yellow after he began cultivating the Burning Art 7.
• Techniques and alchemy: Dou Qi powers combat techniques and can be converted into flame for alchemy. Xiao Se used his trace of wood energy to calm the flame inside a medicine cauldron 9 183.
• Expenditure and recovery: Refining medicine can drain a cultivator's Dou Qi. Xiao Se circulated the Burning Art to restore his supply after alchemy practice 10.

Relation to Soul Power

• Dou Qi and Soul Land's Soul Power are distinct cultivation systems. Bi Bi Dong needed years of Xiao Se's adjustments before she could fully use techniques developed for Dou Qi with her Soul Power 142.
• The System's Cultivation Converter can convert Soul Power into Dou Qi on the Dou Qi Continent. Conversion is irreversible, and a person's resulting realm can fall if the converted energy is insufficient in quality 315.
• After Xiao Se introduced Dou Qi and basic cultivation methods to Soul Land Star, its inhabitants began cultivating Dou Qi in place of a system dependent on absorbing soul rings 437 438.
