Jiang Yan Hai maintained supersonic flight as he approached the target area. He would reach them in less than ten minutes.

An air defense identification zone differed from territorial airspace. It was international airspace outside a nation's territory, where aircraft from any country could fly, though they generally notified others before entering.

If an aircraft entered the zone without prior notification, our fighters could generally only conduct close surveillance or escort flights. Unless the aircraft made threatening moves, they had no authority to drive it away, intercept it, or force it to land.

Launching missiles was naturally even more out of the question.

There were generally three situations in which aircraft entered an air defense identification zone. The first was a brief entry; after communicating and reporting their intentions, they could pass through harmlessly.

The second was when they flew through for an extended period, maintaining their speed without any intention of leaving. In such cases, fighters on combat readiness duty would fly over to escort and monitor them until they left our air defense identification zone.

The third was when they entered and headed straight for our territorial airspace. If they not only ignored our instructions but also adopted hostile flight attitudes or tactical maneuvers, then they would be driven away, possibly even warned with fire-control radar.

If they entered territorial airspace, missiles could potentially be launched directly.
