Background
Shu Mountain was the dominant cultivation power of the Central Continent. Its disciples were taught to regard eliminating demons and upholding righteousness as their duty, refusing to retreat even against overwhelming demonic threats 2.
At its height, Shu Mountain was considered stronger than all other Central Continent factions combined. It possessed twenty-seven Tribulation Crossing Stage cultivators, held roughly eighty percent of the continent's Body Integration Stage great powers, and was led by Sect Leader Lingxu, whose true strength was suspected to have reached the Mahayana Stage 270.
Its influence extended far beyond its mountain gate. Shu Mountain considered the world its responsibility, maintained offices in regions such as the Southern Border, and treated the Central Continent as falling under its jurisdiction 122 157 209.
Organization
Seven Peaks
Shu Mountain's “Seven Peaks” were its principal branches, though each peak governed numerous subsidiary mountains 258.
| Peak | Known Peak Master / Notes |
|---|---|
| Little Bamboo Peak | Daoist Liu Yi, a Tribulation Crossing Stage cultivator 258 |
| Great Bamboo Peak | Wang Yushu, a Tribulation Crossing Stage Sword Cultivator 258 |
| Dragon Head Peak | Daoist Caogu, skilled in pill refinement, medicine, and formations 258 |
| Sunset Peak | Daoist Qingshi, a Tribulation Crossing Stage Heaven's Secrets specialist and Shu Mountain strategist 258 |
| Little Qiong Peak | Yuyangzi, a Tribulation Crossing Stage Sword Cultivator 258 |
| Silver Sword Peak | Formerly led by Lu Ziyin; later its Peak Master token was used by Ling Xuanxiao to restore the formation's missing sector 58 312 |
| Tongtian Peak | Shu Mountain's highest peak and a central sect location; destroyed during the siege 109 318 |
Leadership and Discipline
- Sect Leader Lingxu — Shu Mountain's leader, responsible for major strategy and sect-wide orders 121 323.
- Deputy Sect Leader Wushangzi — commanded the defense during Lingxu's absence and activated the Sword Formation alongside the remaining peak masters 311.
- Peak Masters — held the authority to activate their respective sectors of the Shushan Sword Formation 311.
- Law Enforcement Hall — enforced sect rules and conducted Dao Heart inspections 34 270.
- Disciples departing Shu Mountain were required to submit detailed route reports; the sect could independently inspect those routes for inconsistencies 105.
- Shushan maintained archives of disciples' public movements, which were significant enough to be targeted by long-term enemy infiltration 227.
Shushan Sword Formation
The Shushan Sword Formation was Shu Mountain's defining defensive and offensive asset. It was a vast, high-damage sword formation whose coverage nearly encompassed the entire Central Continent, allowing Shushan great powers to retain an advantage even within another cultivator's territory 143 270.
- The formation could be activated remotely through a Shushan Sword Token, allowing disciples in crisis to summon aid from the sect 122.
- Four Tribulation Crossing Stage elders used it to drive Asura Hall forces from the Great Xia capital 122.
- Six Tribulation Crossing Stage elders later deployed a joint Sword Formation attack against Liu Qiushui 124.
- Thirty-six ancient sword steles on Shu Mountain could awaken and mobilize as part of the formation, generating a storm of sword energy 173.
- The standard technique was taught as a required Shushan discipline; advanced users could deploy a personal version centered on themselves 68 306.
- Full sect-wide activation required the participation of all seven peak masters. During the final siege, the deaths or absences of the Little Bamboo and Silver Sword Peak Masters left two sectors dark 311.
- Ling Xuanxiao later used the Silver Sword Peak Peak Master token to restore the missing sector and stabilize the larger formation 312.
Facilities and Defenses
- Demon Suppressing Pagoda — a major containment site for imprisoned demons. Its destruction released countless demons during Shu Mountain's fall 319 320.
- Sword Tomb — the final refuge ordered for surviving disciples after the sect's defenses collapsed 320 323.
- Scripture Repository — held extensive cultivation knowledge; it was destroyed during the assault by the Ascension Great Emperor 209 320.
- Treasury — looted and destroyed amid the final siege 320.
- Southern Border Office — a staffed Shu Mountain outpost responsible for regional reception and protection against evil beasts 209.
- Peak-protection formations — each peak maintained its own protective formation for disciples still developing their cultivation 174.
Sect Culture
Shu Mountain publicly promoted broad access to cultivation, once proclaiming:
“Everyone can tread the path to immortality!” 337
Its reputation gave ordinary disciples considerable standing outside the sect; cultivators from other factions would naturally approach and greet someone identified as a Shushan disciple 157.
Silver Sword Peak also adopted an unusually cautious revised creed under Ling Xuanxiao's influence, emphasizing suspicion, avoidance of danger, and survival over bravado 96.
Major Events
Early campaigns
Shu Mountain dispatched elders and disciples to Mount Wu Wang after learning that Di Nüfeng and Liu Qiushui had appeared there. When Murong Mo could not be found, the sect attributed his presumed death to the two fiends and recorded it as a blood debt 18.
The sect also regularly sent disciples on demon-elimination assignments, including the mission to exterminate the tiger demons of Weihu Mountain 21.
Defense of Great Xia
When Asura Hall attacked Great Xia's capital, Shen Chujian activated a Shushan Sword Token. Four Tribulation Crossing Stage elders descended with the Shushan Sword Formation and forced back the attackers 122.
Shu Mountain later deployed six Tribulation Crossing Stage elders against Liu Qiushui, compelling her withdrawal after she realized she had been lured into an ambush 124.
Growing hostility
After the Profound Sword Sect attacked Shu Mountain disciples, Sect Leader Lingxu imposed martial law and ordered all disciples outside the sect to return immediately 302.
The crisis escalated when the Profound Sword Sect, Heavenly Dao Alliance, Qingyun Sect, and Xuantian Sword Sect openly rebelled against Shu Mountain 310. Outside powers, including the Western Paradise of Ultimate Bliss, Star Palace, Ink Pool Sect, and Ascended Immortals' Descendants, then joined a coordinated assault on the sect 311.
Fall of Shu Mountain
The coalition assaulted the Shushan Sword Formation with mountain-bearing flying ships, corrosive filth, and storms of flame 311. Gou Shengzi later led fifteen Tribulation Crossing Stage cultivators and more than forty Body Integration Stage cultivators in an attack that breached the formation using bloody mountains filled with Outer Realm Demons 316.
The Shushan Sword Formation was ultimately shattered, allowing invading cultivators to descend upon the sect 317. Tongtian Peak was destroyed, Daoist Qingshi was killed, and more than sixty enemy Tribulation Crossing Stage great powers besieged Shu Mountain 318.
After the Demon Suppressing Pagoda broke and the sect's treasury and Scripture Repository were destroyed, Li Xuanxiao ordered the remaining disciples to retreat to the Sword Tomb 320. Lingxu subsequently ordered all survivors to abandon Shu Mountain, while Wushangzi rallied those who remained to resist the released demons 323.
Legacy
Thirty years after Shu Mountain's destruction, surviving disciples were exceptionally rare and hunted as Shushan remnants 337. The sect's name became taboo in much of the cultivation world, where some portrayed its destruction as deserved retribution while others remembered its unmatched power 336.
Shushan relics, jade tokens, treasures, and the surviving disciples' identities became objects of fear, pursuit, and opportunism 337 347 362. A defaced Shushan jade pendant was later found re-engraved with the words:
“Shushan Has Not Perished!!” 380
