The Aserkelo Elven Council was steeped in deathly silence.
The once-sacred Aserkelo was now permeated by the stench of blood, and the bleak sorrow of an approaching apocalypse filled every corner.
"Our people's casualties have exceeded half... It is time to consider beginning the Tree Burial ceremony."
An elder spoke, breaking the silence that hung over the Elven Council.
"For Aserkelo to endure, we can only sacrifice some of our people," another elder proposed.
"Endure? Only an Aserkelo where every one of our people remains is the true Aserkelo!"
Queitoan Elder was the first to stand and refute the two elders' proposal.
"Do not forget that our duty is to protect the World Tree, Queitoan. I know this decision is selfish, but I will be the first sacrifice for the World Tree's continuation," the elder said gravely.
"Calm down. There are other ways to save Aserkelo!"
Elder Sindonal could no longer maintain his silence.
"Other ways... Sindonal, what are you talking about?"
As the other three elders turned their gazes toward him, an elven priest hurriedly burst into the council chamber.
"What is it? Has Aserkelo's altitude fallen again?"
"No... Elders! You must come and see! A miracle... A miracle bestowed by the World Tree has happened!"
The elven priest's voice was filled with barely restrained excitement.
"A miracle?"
The five elders present had prayed for that word for far too long. Other than a miracle or sinking further into despair, they could not think of a third way to save Aserkelo.
The elven priest's excited expression moved the elders. They immediately hurried down from their seats and followed the priest.

She returned to her room
