Background / History

Moro is a transmigrator who initially lived cautiously, focusing on earning money, repaying Molena, refining his Nen, and avoiding unnecessary conflict. When Molena demands that he kill twenty-one people—including children—to gain another ability, he refuses and decides to leave her circle despite the danger of doing so. 1 4

After dying at Feitan’s hands, Moro awakens one year before his death in a prisoner transport. His Growth Rings have changed into a level-based system, and a Death Node appears on his left hand. A Death Replay confirms Feitan as his killer; Moro must kill him before June 23, 1997, to erase the node and survive. 5

The threat of the Death Node changes Moro’s priorities. He begins pursuing combat experience, intelligence networks, Nen mastery, and stronger opponents rather than wealth alone. His central goal becomes defeating Feitan through his own strength rather than relying on outside forces. 15 107 123

Personality

Moro is calm, observant, and highly analytical under pressure. His skill in antiques develops into a combat mindset centered on reading behavior, predicting decisions, exploiting incomplete information, and preparing contingencies. This approach earns him the title “The Thinker.” 27 97 124

He initially maintains a firm moral boundary, refusing Molena’s demand to murder innocent people. However, as the Death Node and repeated life-or-death conflicts reshape him, he becomes increasingly ruthless toward people he judges to possess killing intent or pose an unavoidable threat. 1 104 107

Despite his pragmatism, Moro is protective of those close to him. He shields Kalluto from Hisoka’s aura, avoids exposing Kalluto to media attention, and clears civilians away before fighting Illumi. 156 165 201

Moro values strength as the foundation of freedom: the ability to decide what he will and will not do. He trains obsessively but retains his earlier desire to live comfortably, eat well, and enjoy life. 123

Abilities & Skills

Growth Rings and Death Rewind

The Growth Rings are a tattoo-like Nen mechanism that records Moro’s level, stores energy, enhances his aura, and allows him to return through time after death.

  • Levels increase Moro’s manifested aura and potential aura capacity. 22 51
  • At the Level 21 threshold, the Rings provide a mechanism for creating a tailored Nen ability. 51
  • The first Death Rewind sends Moro one year into the past after his death at Feitan’s hands. 5
  • Later rewinds consume the energy stored in completed Growth Rings; a second-ring rewind sends him back one month. 242
  • Strong post-death Nen and Nen tools can charge the Rings far more effectively than ordinary Nen objects. 123 211 255
  • Higher levels become progressively harder to obtain, and opponents below a certain strength eventually provide no meaningful experience. 191 310

Death Replay and Killing-Intent Perception

Moro repeatedly experiences memories of his death through the Death Node, gradually developing extraordinary sensitivity to danger, malice, and killing intent.

  • Detects hostile intent before attacks are launched. 104 124
  • Uses accumulated death-replay experience as the foundation for Star Brilliance Condensation. 59 124
  • Can perceive danger that is not obvious from an opponent’s aura flow alone. 124
  • This sensitivity does not make him omniscient; unknown abilities and insufficient information remain major threats. 351

Deceptive Flying Stars

Moro’s principal Emission-type offense creates dense Nen projectiles known as Flying Stars.

  • Fires Nen bullets and larger condensed Flying Stars at high speed. 59 107
  • Flying Stars can split, change trajectory, reconverge, and strike from blind angles. 59 195
  • Can be used with delayed timing to deceive counterattack-type opponents. 71
  • A single Flying Star can burst into numerous lethal fragments against groups of armed opponents. 107
  • Later applications include large-scale attacks such as Starlight and Fierce Bow. 267 334

Star Brilliance Condensation

A close-range sensory and control ability created to counter Feitan’s speed.

  • Surrounds Moro within a five-meter field of dense, brilliant starlight. 59
  • Disturbed star points relay an opponent’s attack trajectory to Moro, allowing him to evade with near-precognitive timing. 59
  • Star points can attach to targets and form cross-shaped Star Marks. 59
  • Marked targets can be tracked or targeted by subsequent attacks. 110 153
  • Attached starlight can condense into Star Chains that temporarily immobilize a target. 59
  • The chains cannot suppress an opponent’s Nen, and their duration depends on the difference in Nen intensity. 59
  • Its close-range activation requirements conflict with Moro’s natural advantages as an Emitter. 286

Flash Strike and Flying Star Jump

Moro develops short-range displacement techniques after recording and adapting an ability through the Growth Rings.

  • Flying Star Jump allows rapid short-distance teleportation and repositioning. 242
  • Flash Strike is used to instantly close distance and execute opponents before they can respond. 243 265
  • He combines Flash Strike with Flying Star Jump to predict and intercept escape routes. 243
  • Flash Strike can incur a one-minute cooldown after use. 352

Nen Removal and Post-Death Nen Absorption

Moro can remove, refine, and absorb post-death Nen into the Growth Rings.

  • Can neutralize Death Nen attached to people and objects. 76 93 180
  • Absorbing post-death Nen increases Growth Ring energy. 76 182 255
  • The process exposes him to memory fragments, emotional residue, and severe mental strain. 76 182
  • He can suppress or seal the lingering will contained within post-death Nen instead of inheriting its abilities. 160 255
  • He absorbed the dangerous post-death Nen within the Nen tool Gokuen without being corrupted by its killing intent. 211 212
  • He later incorporates Neferpitou’s death-enhanced ability, Black Warding Dance, into his own ability system. 422

Black Warding Dance

A death-enhanced ability originally belonging to Neferpitou and later integrated into Moro’s combat system.

  • Manifests as a red humanoid phantom connected to Moro by Nen threads. 423
  • Allows high-speed aerial movement and mobility. 423
  • Can be combined with Star Brilliance Condensation in combat. 422
  • Retains ominous black Death Nen within its manifestation. 423

Sparks Ignite a Prairie Fire

A later offensive ability tested against Youpi.

  • Ignites blue flames on the target’s body. 374
  • The flames cannot be extinguished through ordinary means. 374
  • Forces targets to adapt physically or suffer continued pressure from the effect. 374

Divine Script

Moro studies Divine Script to expand and refine his Nen system.

  • Specializes in recording-type scripts that can integrate with his existing abilities. 317
  • Uses Star Mark Divine Script coins to guide Flying Stars. 352
  • Uses Divine Script bronze discs to seal a portion of his aura when concealment is necessary. 333
  • Researches composite scripts and a spatial-transfer script to overcome the limits of Flying Star Jump. 317 336

Martial Arts and Nen Technique Replication

Moro supplements his rapid aura growth with intensive physical and technical training.

  • Deliberately advances through Heaven’s Arena slowly to accumulate martial-arts experience. 26 27
  • Learns from Kashi Toru and Calista while teaching them Nen. 123 124
  • Replicates and improves Kashi Toru’s Tiger Bite Fist after observing it. 123 124
  • Uses advanced techniques including Flow, Ko, In, Zhou, Limb Distortion, and Shin-Kage-Ryu techniques. 149 151 286 317
  • His physical strength, body conditioning, and martial skill improve significantly through Menchi’s medicinal cuisine and sustained training. 123 137

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Crimson Jade Bird Blade — Nen-infused blade purchased at auction; Moro uses it in close combat, though he later considers exchanging it for a weapon with stronger Nen. 93 157 210
  • Gokuen’s scabbard — The remaining scabbard of the post-death Nen tool Gokuen; it contains Nen stronger than the Crimson Jade Bird Blade. 212 214
  • Firearms — Used to test enemy abilities, apply pressure, and support Flying Star tactics. 22 71
  • Divine Script coins and bronze discs — Script-bearing tools used for guidance, recording, and aura sealing. 333 352

Relationships

  • Molena — Former benefactor and leader of the circle Moro leaves after refusing her demand to kill innocents. Moro remains grateful for her early help but rejects her goal of destroying humanity. 1 23
  • Argo — Information broker hired to track Feitan and investigate the Phantom Troupe; Moro respects her limits regarding the mafia. 15 16 22
  • Kalluto Zoldyck — Close ally and frequent companion. Moro protects Kalluto from danger and public scrutiny, while Kalluto becomes strongly attached to him and seeks to grow stronger at his side. 107 156 255
  • Kurapika — Trusted traveling companion and combat ally. Moro respects Kurapika’s restraint and later relies on their mutual trust during encounters with Beyond’s group. 212 255 352
  • Menchi — Ally who supports Moro through medicinal cuisine and searches for stronger Nen weapons for him. Her feelings toward Moro are implied. 121 123 164
  • Kashi Toru — Moro’s disciple in Nen and martial-arts instructor in return; their relationship is built on mutual teaching and improvement. 123 124
  • Calista — Moro’s disciple, who seeks to develop abilities that can support his goals. 123 125
  • Hisoka — Rival, occasional collaborator, and Phantom Troupe informant. Hisoka is fascinated by Moro’s rapid growth, while Moro remains focused on practical objectives rather than Hisoka’s desire for battle. 201 203 422
  • Isaac Netero — Observer, prospective recruiter, and sparring partner. Netero recognizes Moro’s potential early and later tests him directly. 151 293 387
  • Ging Freecss — Moro enters a year-long training and sparring arrangement with Ging, who sees value in Moro’s strength, mindset, and Nen-removal ability. 269 272
  • Feitan — Moro’s original killer and the central target imposed by the Death Node. Moro ultimately kills him, setting off the Phantom Troupe’s investigation. 5 203
  • The Chimera — A powerful creature marked by Moro that becomes loyal to him and repeatedly assists his group. 267 312

Trivia

  • Moro’s title, “The Thinker,” originates from his unusual habit of observing and analyzing opponents rather than simply overwhelming them. 27 124
  • He earned 3.6 billion in less than a month after his rebirth, but deliberately stopped pursuing further wealth to prioritize strength. 15
  • Moro considers weapons with strong inherent Nen essential because Star Brilliance Condensation limits the amount of aura he can freely allocate in close combat. 210
