History

After Jingū Kiraku killed Hanzō the Salamander and assumed control of Amegakure, Konoha treated the change of leadership as a major threat to its interests in the Land of Rain. Third Hokage Hiruzen Sarutobi immediately convened the village's senior leadership, insisting that Konoha's interests in the region could not be violated 10.

Konoha first dispatched envoys led by Natsume to demand war reparations from Amegakure. Sarutobi Yunosuke, a jōnin and Hiruzen's blood relative, openly insulted the village and was severely beaten by Kiraku after destroying the conference table 17 18. The failed mission prompted Konoha's elders to press for military action, and Hiruzen ordered Jiraiya, Tsunade, and Orochimaru back to the border for an offensive against the Land of Rain 20.

During the invasion, Amegakure repeatedly exploited poison gas, ambushes, and superior intelligence. Konoha adapted to the Poison Cavalry's attacks and occupied Graystone Town as a planned logistics point, but suffered 204 dead there after a poison-gas operation: 2 jōnin, 84 chūnin, and 118 genin 38 41. The village nevertheless ordered continued attacks and sent Danzō Shimura and Root to reinforce the front 41 42.

The campaign deteriorated sharply after Tsunade was killed and Jiraiya's fate became unknown. Hiruzen responded with grief and fury, while Konoha sent Hatake Sakumo, the White Fang, to eliminate Kiraku and recover its prestige 52. Konoha was further weakened when Sunagakure destroyed its southern Land of Rain supply hub; Nawaki was killed, Orochimaru was severely wounded and disappeared, and Konoha's forces retreated in disorder 59.

Konoha then faced pressure beyond Amegakure. Kiraku's false-flag operation against Sunagakure had already helped trigger a Konoha–Sunagakure war, while the attack on the Land of Fire's capital exposed Konoha's inability to shield the Daimyō and nobles from Amegakure 30 31 66. Later, the Sky Ninja Village bombed Konoha itself, forcing Hiruzen to personally lead the successful counterattack against their fleet and Aerial Fortress 75 80 81.

The victory over the Sky Ninja did not end the crisis. Kumogakure invaded from the north and Iwagakure attacked in Grass Country, leaving Konoha fighting on four fronts. Nara Shibazaki's response was to withdraw from the Land of Rain, Land of Rivers, and Land of Frost, contract Konoha's defenses, and concentrate on Kumogakure 82 89 90.

With Danzō captured and Amegakure gaining the Zero Tails and the Sky Ninja's Aerial Fortress, Konoha returned to negotiations under Akimichi Torifu. It accepted reparations of five billion ryō, territorial concessions, and other demands to end the war; the final settlement required Amegakure to release Danzō and Konoha prisoners in stages and cease further attacks on the Land of Fire 103 108 109.

Conventional Shinobi Forces

Konoha fields large numbers of genin, chūnin, jōnin, reconnaissance specialists, sensory ninja, and clan-based units. Its shinobi used Earth Release shelters, Fire Release airflow, Water Release isolation, and ninja tools to survive Amegakure's poison-gas attack at Graystone Town 41.

  • Its forces included Hyūga reconnaissance units capable of using the Byakugan on the battlefield 38 89.
  • Konoha's soldiers were organized around supply hubs and transit bases supporting multiple fronts in the Land of Rain, Grass Country, and the Land of Fire 56 90.

  • Iwagakure — Exploited Konoha's weakness after the Sky Ninja assault and launched attacks in Grass Country under Ōnoki and Kari 77 89.
  • Kumogakure — Invaded the Land of Fire during Konoha's wider crisis, forcing Konoha to prioritize the northern front in its defensive strategy 82 90.
  • Sky Ninja Village — Suffered a surprise aerial bombing campaign before Hiruzen's assault destroyed most of its fleet and neutralized its Aerial Fortress cannon 75 80 81.
