Moonlight hung overhead, and the stars glittered.
Dong Xuebin reread tomorrow afternoon's front-page news several times. He was the type to act the moment he made up his mind. Once he had memorized it, he took out a lighter and quickly burned the newspaper, then dug out his car keys, got into the Porsche, drove out of the Family Compound, and headed straight for the Accident Site where the incident would happen tomorrow. Since the accident was set to occur tomorrow afternoon and the newspaper had only just been printed, it was probably a last-minute extra edition headline. It did not even list the victims' names, much less provide a definite accident assessment. It merely said the construction materials were suspected of being linked to corner-cutting. Without seeing it himself, Dong Xuebin could not rest easy, so he went.
On the way, he called home.
The phone rang for a long time before connecting.
"Hello." Xie Huilan's sleepy voice drifted out. "What is it?"
"Were you asleep?" Dong Xuebin said. "I want to ask you something. Do you know Xiping Third Middle School?"
Xie Huilan yawned. "Third Middle School? The one that collapsed during the earthquake? I've heard about it. What happened?"
Dong Xuebin hurriedly said, "Has Third Middle School been rebuilt already? How far along is it? Who's the contractor? Who's in charge? Tell me everything in detail."
"Tell me what you're planning to do first."
"Come on, just tell me first."
"Fine, fine, I can't do anything with you." Xie Huilan paused and said, "A lot of the local elementary and middle schools collapsed in the earthquake. The district and county governments were responsible for rebuilding them. Some projects went through bidding, while others were directly assigned. I don't know much about the contractor for
