Personality

Shisui initially approaches the Uchiha crisis as an idealist. He wants to preserve both Konoha and his clan, places great faith in Hiruzen Sarutobi, and believes careful intervention can avert a coup without bloodshed. This conviction leaves him vulnerable to Danzō’s ambush and to the political manipulation surrounding Kotoamatsukami. 40 47 48 51

His death and resurrection force him to confront the failure of those beliefs. After learning that Itachi massacred the Uchiha Clan, including its noncombatants, Shisui accepts responsibility for his earlier choices and commits himself to correcting what he sees as his mistake. 111 112

As Amaterasu, Shisui is markedly colder and more pragmatic. He conducts silent assassinations, extracts intelligence through genjutsu, refuses to compromise Red Moon information, and remains composed against Kakuzu and Sasori despite the danger. 198 199 200

Background & History

ANBU service and the Uchiha crisis

Shisui served in the ANBU under a cat-faced mask and was assigned to observe Naruto Uzumaki. During this duty, he recognized Naruto’s unusual growth and praised his ability to use Wind Release: Great Breakthrough before entering the Academy. 39

Within the Uchiha Clan, Shisui was viewed as a crucial link to the ANBU and Konoha’s leadership. He understood the hostility held by Danzō and the other advisers toward the Uchiha, but believed Hiruzen was the clan’s remaining opportunity for reconciliation. 40 46

As conflict escalated between the Uchiha Police Force and Konoha, Shisui concluded that a coup would destroy the clan. He resolved to use Kotoamatsukami to gradually alter Fugaku Uchiha’s stance and weaken the Radical Faction’s influence. 45 48

Ambush and death

After Shisui disclosed Kotoamatsukami to Hiruzen, Hiruzen secretly sent a message to Danzō, who arranged an ambush through Root. Danzō used Izanagi to escape Shisui’s genjutsu and steal his right Mangekyō Sharingan. 47 48

Shisui continued fighting Root with his remaining eye and manifested Susanoo, but its use severely burdened his chakra, body, and eyesight. Menma later intercepted him with Azure Dragon and White Tiger, exposed the limitation of Shisui’s remaining Kotoamatsukami, and killed him after taking his left Mangekyō Sharingan. 50 51

His death destabilized the Uchiha Clan. The clan lost a major combat asset, while Shisui’s letter—presented as a suicide note—deepened uncertainty around his final intentions and the circumstances of his murder. 60 78 79

Resurrection and reckoning

Two years after his death, Menma summoned Shisui through Impure World Reincarnation alongside Uchiha victims of the massacre. Shisui awoke in Konoha with his memories halted at the moment of his death. 111

Learning that Itachi had exterminated the Uchiha Clan shattered Shisui’s trust in both Itachi and Hiruzen. When Menma revealed that he had saved Uchiha children, Shisui recognized the man who killed him as the clan’s benefactor. 111 112

Shisui then confronted Itachi, declaring him the error he had created and fighting him with Susanoo. He dissipated with the other reanimated Uchiha after vowing that the Uchiha’s revenge would endure. 112 113

Red Moon operations

Shisui later operated for the Red Moon Organization under the identity Amaterasu. Menma deployed him alongside Shin Uchiha outside the Land of Snow. 144

During an operation against Iwagakure’s excavation team, he infiltrated ahead of the main force, eliminated several shinobi, extracted intelligence from a dying Rock ninja through genjutsu, and confronted Kakuzu and Sasori. 198

Shisui’s reanimated body allowed him to endure Sasori’s Iron Sand and repeated explosions. He fought Kakuzu, Sasori, and Deidara using Shadow Techniques, swordsmanship, Susanoo, and the Mutually Multiplying Explosive Tags Technique before Kukomaka intervened against the group. 199 200 203
