Background / History
Huang Yaoshi's daughter, Huang Rong, left Peach Blossom Island following a quarrel with him. After a month, he tracked her from the island to Shaoxing by following the conspicuous trail she left through her unchanged route, market visits, street fights, and challenges against local martial arts schools. He initially concealed himself behind a paper-thin mask and watched her together with Lu Chen from a courtyard wall. 15
Protective of Huang Rong and suspicious of Lu Chen, Huang Yaoshi initially believed the youth was pretending to be inexperienced in swordsmanship to deceive his daughter. Lu Chen's performance of Sword One: White Rainbow Piercing the Sun, however, forced Huang Yaoshi to use eighty to ninety percent of his strength to meet it; their weapons broke in the collision, changing his suspicion into astonishment and reluctant admiration. 16
He set Lu Chen a one-year condition for becoming a closed-door disciple: find and capture his renegade disciples, Chen Xuanfeng and Mei Chaofeng. Although he refused to pass on Jade Flute Swordplay before the wager was fulfilled, he allowed Huang Rong to teach Lu Chen Falling Blossom Swordplay and Peach Blossom Island's movement techniques. 17 18
Huang Yaoshi continued to assess Lu Chen's character and practical ability. He tested the youth's wide but uneven knowledge across literature, astronomy, military affairs, irrigation, metallurgy, and mechanisms; later, he arranged for the bandit chief Xue Wu to serve as Lu Chen's first lethal test and warned him to protect Huang Rong. 18 22
After Lu Chen and Huang Rong returned with Mei Chaofeng ahead of the pact's deadline, Huang Yaoshi did not insist on making Lu Chen his disciple. He instead publicly acknowledged Lu Chen as Huang Rong's chosen husband when Ouyang Feng came to propose a marriage between Huang Rong and Ouyang Ke. 57 60
In later years, Huang Yaoshi's temper softens and his regret over his treatment of former disciples becomes more apparent. He accepts martial arts manuals and treasures brought back by Huang Rong and Lu Chen, studies Old Man's Fist, and eventually officiates their wedding on Huang Rong's birthday. 95 96 122
Appearance
Huang Yaoshi is a tall, thin, refined-looking man who commonly wears azure or green scholar's robes. He initially appears masked, but beneath it has a handsome, slender face. 15 58
- Tall and slender, with an ethereal, unhurried bearing. 15 21
- Often dressed in azure, green, or blue robes. 15 21 96
- Uses a paper-thin facial mask while concealing his identity. 15
- Frequently carries and plays a jade flute. 58
Personality
Huang Yaoshi is famously eccentric, proud, and contrarian. He disdains conventional etiquette and reacts sharply when he believes someone threatens or manipulates Huang Rong, making his early treatment of Lu Chen cold and hostile. 16 17
His severity is rooted in intense paternal devotion. He is reluctant to force Huang Rong home after their previous quarrel, quietly tests Lu Chen's worthiness, and ultimately accepts his daughter's choice rather than impose Ouyang Ke's proposal upon her. 17 22 60
A learned perfectionist, Huang Yaoshi values unusual talent, independent thought, and mastery earned through comprehension rather than rote imitation. Lu Chen's broad knowledge, persistence, and ability to capture the free-flowing essence of Peach Blossom Island martial arts gradually earn his respect. 18 19
In later appearances, he is more reflective about his past harshness toward his disciples. His affection remains most obvious around Huang Rong and, later, his granddaughter, whom he patiently—if exhaustedly—cares for on Peach Blossom Island. 95 243

Martial Arts Mastery
As the Eastern Heretic and one of the Five Greats, Huang Yaoshi possesses grandmaster-level internal power, movement techniques, weapon skills, and unarmed arts. 15 59

- At the renewed Mount Hua Sword Conference, he remains recognized as the Eastern Heretic among the new Five Greats. 124
Peach Blossom Island Martial Arts
Huang Yaoshi created and refined several of Peach Blossom Island's defining arts.
