Background / History

At age twenty, Changning was only at the Foundation Establishment stage and considered poorly suited to cultivation. While attempting to rescue a persecuted woman, he was badly beaten. A passing young woman killed the assailant, saved the victim, and casually pointed at Changning before leaving. He describes this moment as an enlightenment that led to repeated fortunate encounters and his eventual rise to Immortal King 18.

The woman became Changning's benefactor. When she later asked him to admit her younger brother, Xiang Tian, to Changning Immortal Academy, Changning ordered Qiu Changfeng to treat Xiang Tian well regardless of any damage or disruption he caused 1 18.

Before Xiang Tian's arrival, Changning had been in seclusion for nearly two hundred years. He nevertheless appeared personally when Ding Chongshan attempted to strike Xiang Tian, forcing the Ding family to retreat 1 3.

Appearance

Changning has entirely white hair but the face of a young man. He is described as handsome and distinguished, with an aura so closely connected to heaven and earth that he seems to embody it 3.

Personality

Changning is generally composed and restrained, maintaining a calm expression even during major crises 18. He is also deeply protective of Xiang Tian, acting immediately against anyone who harms or threatens him.

Despite his refined bearing, he can be bluntly decisive. He warns Ding Chongshan against escalating hostilities, attacks Qu Ying after seeing Xiang Tian's injured face, and later arrives at Jade Pool prepared for open conflict 3 35 40.

He strongly dislikes Qu Ying, the Queen Mother of the West. He states that he repeatedly rejected her in the past and that she once drugged him, leaving him unwilling to reconcile with her 26 40.

Changning's protection establishes Xiang Tian's position at Changning Immortal Academy. He personally stops Ding Chongshan's retaliation and makes clear that the Ding family risks destruction if it continues the conflict 3.

He also supports Xiang Tian's use of the Sword Comprehension Stone, ensuring that the academy's Sword Intent does not fall into Sinan Yao's hands 6.

Conflict with Jade Pool

After Jade Pool's accusations against Xiang Tian, Changning meets him in disguise and advises him to seek opportunities in Wu Mountain's secret realm 26.

When Qu Ying holds Xiang Tian at Jade Pool, Changning arrives in response to her demand. Seeing Xiang Tian's injured face, he immediately attacks Qu Ying and deploys his Ancient Frost Domain against her Blazing Sun Domain 35.

After the Heavenly Stele shatters during the confrontation, Changning assists in addressing the crisis. He later removes Qu Ying's restriction from Xiang Tian and returns with him to confront Jade Pool 36 40.

Appointment as Wind God

Following Xiang Tian's ascent to the Divine Realm and the vacancy left by An Dong's death, Xiang Tian recommends Changning for the Wind God position. Changning accepts the responsibility despite his initial shock at the offer 118.

At the gathering of gods, Xiang Tian formally inscribes Changning's name into the Investiture of the Gods and elevates him to Seventh-Rank Deity 120.
