Background / History
Wanhua was originally a modern man. After being struck by a truck, he died and awakened in the primordial Chaos before heaven and earth had formed. His consciousness had become bound to the Myriad Dao Celestial Tome, an Innate Supreme Treasure able to record methods and deduce their principles, but originally unable to act upon the outside world. 1
His early existence was defined by helpless observation. Unable to move the tome or directly interfere with the world, he examined both the tome’s inheritance and memories from his prior life, including imagined cultivation systems from another universe. Rather than follow the Primordial Era’s reliance on external spiritual energy and Heavenly Dao authority, he resolved to create a path rooted in the heart, personal will, knowledge, and principle. 1 2
Wanhua named this power literary qi and established the early framework of the Confucian Dao. Its original cultivation ladder included the Literary Qi, Literary Heart, Literary Gallbladder, Literary Palace, Intent, Great Confucian, Literary Master, and Literary Sage realms, with higher stages still left to be refined. 3
During Hongjun’s impending ascension, Wanhua condensed a humanoid Dao body connected to the tome’s origin and used the opportunity to prove his own Dao. His independent attainment disrupted the Heavenly Dao’s intended process and made him the first to prove the Primordial through personal means rather than World-Opening Merit. 5 6
Appearance
After forming a Dao body, Wanhua appears as a composed scholar-sage whose restrained bearing contrasts with the overwhelming stability of his power. 5 31
- A roughly seven-foot humanoid Dao body suffused with chaotic literary radiance. 5
- A faint Literary Heart mark between his brows. 5
- Usually wears a simple cyan Daoist robe. 31
- Clear, profound eyes described as holding neither anger nor resentment, but an impassive awareness that sees through conflict. 31
Personality
Wanhua is reflective, determined, and unusually patient. His initial despair at becoming an immobile artifact gave way to a conviction that knowledge could create a path beyond the constraints of the Heavenly Dao. He consistently favors deduction, teaching, institutional planning, and the gradual spread of principles over simple force. 1 2 60
His ideals center on reason, order, civilization, self-cultivation, and preserving life. He does not reject force when necessary—he suppressed the Demon Court, sealed Minghe, and neutralized attacks on his academy—but frames power as a means to defend the Dao and protect the conditions in which living beings can learn and rebuild. 54 86 88
Wanhua is also strategically cautious. He prepares contingencies across generations, conceals the Taiji Dao Seed while it matures, collects Ancestral Witch remnants for future reconstruction, and prioritizes preserving knowledge and capable people during the Investiture of the Gods calamity. 71 80 118
Abilities & Skills
Myriad Dao Celestial Tome
Wanhua’s original body is the Myriad Dao Celestial Tome, an Innate Supreme Treasure that records methods, analyzes divine abilities, and deduces the feasibility of different Dao systems. Its original limitation was that it could not directly act or intervene. 1
- Combines the tome’s Primordial inheritance with Wanhua’s memories from another world to formulate new cultivation systems. 1 2
- Deduced the foundations, realms, divine abilities, and later refinements of the Confucian Dao. 3 4
- Enables long-term analysis of laws, calamities, civilization, reincarnation, and temporal abnormalities. 71 80 84
Literary Dao and Literary Qi
Wanhua created literary qi as a power born from wisdom, conviction, will, and understanding of principle. His Dao emphasizes investigating things, rectifying the heart, self-cultivation, governance, and bringing peace to all beneath heaven. 3 21
- Spoken teachings can manifest as tangible principle-runes and trigger enlightenment in listeners. 21
- Literary qi can be used offensively, defensively, supportively, and for deduction. 4
- At Dao Ancestor level, Wanhua can stir the Confucian Dao laws integrated into the Heavenly Dao. 89
- The Dao’s central values include benevolence, forgiveness, fairness, integrity, civilization, and orderly regulation. 89 90
Word of Law
Wanhua’s words and principles can directly influence the order of the world. This ability emerged from his Literary Dao rather than Heavenly Dao merit and became increasingly potent as his Dao matured. 6 54 89
- Established his Literary Dao through personal realization and proved the Primordial independently. 6
- Used blood-written poetic characters to punish the Demon Race Heavenly Court with Killing Intent Devours the Heart. 54
- Declared and reinforced new order after the Witch-Demon catastrophe, connecting the Literary Dao with the Human and Earth Daos. 79
- Inscribed the Confucian Dao’s laws into the source of the Heavenly Dao. 89
Confucian Dao Divine Abilities
Wanhua developed the earliest protective arts of the Confucian Dao while still cultivating within the tome. 3 4
- Literary Fire Body Tempering — Converts literary qi into gentle inner fire that tempers the Dao body and Primordial Spirit while improving the conversion of ambient spiritual qi. 16 17
- Tongue-and-Sword — Condenses literary qi into a sharp blade of principle; its intended purpose is to cut through evil, delusion, and threats to the Dao. 4 23
- Splendid Tapestry / Impenetrable Defense — Forms protective written manifestations with Guardian Dao resonance. 4
- Subtle Words, Profound Meaning — Applies literary qi through nuanced principle and conceptual influence; its later applications include domain control. 4 35
- Each Word a Pearl — Manifests characters or short phrases to create temporary effects. 35
- Spring and Autumn Annals Brushwork — A greater divine ability with an incomplete framework; its use risks backlash from time and space. 4
Song of Righteousness
The Song of Righteousness is a ritual state that invokes the Vast Righteous Qi associated with order, justice, and uprightness. 4
- Greatly enhances Wanhua’s literary qi recovery and the strength of Confucian Dao divine abilities. 4
- Causes evil influences and invasive arts to struggle against him. 4
- Requires an unwavering, selfless, and morally firm Literary Heart; stray thoughts or serious flaws can prevent invocation or cause backlash. 4
- Purified East Sea demonic aura and supplied the decisive nourishment for the Taiji Dao Seed’s breakthrough. 86
Wisdom Eye and Heart Inquiry
Wanhua uses the Wisdom Eye and the academy’s Clear Heart, See Nature trials to discern intention, potential, and hidden malice. 15 20
- Identifies genuine Dao-seekers, spies, and candidates with malicious motives. 19 20
- Adjusts trials to reveal an applicant’s distinct strengths or inner conflicts. 20
- Leaves concealed Literary Qi Marks on selected individuals for observation or future guidance. 20
- Uses the trials as a form of self-examination rather than a simple exclusionary test. 15
Taiji Dao Seed and Taiji Dao Seal
The Taiji Dao Seed formed within Wanhua’s Dao Fruit as his Literary Dao deepened into the principles of civilization, historical change, and order. 71
- Draws nourishment from civilization’s rise and fall, the Human Dao, the Earth Dao, and acts that restore order. 71 77 86
- Was merged into Myriad Dao Academy’s pillar of providence, making local spiritual energy more responsive to inspiration and law resonance. 73
- Evolved into the Taiji Dao Seal after Wanhua’s Taiji breakthrough. 86 88
- Connects Wanhua to the foundational Confucian Dao laws of the Primordial World. 89
Stabilization and Soul Guidance
Wanhua applies the Literary Dao to chaotic remnants and damaged laws through understanding rather than simple suppression. 80 81 84

Story Role / Major Arcs
Founding the Confucian Dao
After awakening as an immobile treasure-consciousness, Wanhua constructed a new path based on literary qi and the Literary Heart. He formed his Dao body, proved the Literary Dao before Hongjun’s ascension was complete, and survived the Heavenly Dao’s attempt to eliminate him as an anomaly. 1 3 5 6 8
Establishment of Myriad Dao Academy
Wanhua fused the Three Immortals Islands into a continent, reshaped it according to Confucian principles, and founded Myriad Dao Academy. His invitation to all beings—framed as a request for “disciple sweepers”—announced his policy of Education for All and drew both seekers and hostile attention. 9 10
He established the Heart Inquiry Path, accepted Xuanjizi as his first disciple, transmitted Literary Fire Body Tempering, and expanded the academy through lectures, cultivation, practical training, and careful screening of infiltrators. 15 17 20 21 23
Defending the Academy and Spreading the Dao
Wanhua repeatedly protected the academy from Dragon Palace attacks, demonic influences, and Heavenly Court schemes. His interventions showed a pattern of neutralizing violence with stability and principle rather than indiscriminate destruction. 31 43 51 57
After the Guixu crisis, he opened the academy more broadly and placed foundational classics at Dao Transmission Platforms along the East Sea coast, allowing any being to study and copy them. 60
Human Race and New Order
Wanhua’s scroll helped Nuwa reach the insight that led to the Human Race’s creation. He then directed the academy to teach humans survival, virtue, practical knowledge, and independent thought, while resisting attempts by other factions to reduce humanity to a source of followers. 64 65 67
Following the Witch-Demon catastrophe, Wanhua guided the surviving humans toward reconstruction, mutual aid, rational debate, and covenant-based governance. The East Sea Human Race Alliance Common Covenant became a major institutional expression of his ideals. 79 81 84 85
Taiji Breakthrough and Dao Ancestorhood
By cleansing demonic aura and restoring East Sea order, Wanhua completed the Taiji Dao Seed’s evolution and entered the Primordial Taiji Golden Immortal realm. He then defeated and sealed Minghe, establishing the Literary Dao as a major force capable of governing chaos. 86 88
Wanhua later merged the completed Confucian Dao into the Heavenly Dao as a foundational law. This achievement earned him formal recognition as the Confucian Dao’s Dao Ancestor and made his principles of civilization and order accessible across the Primordial World. 89 90
Investiture of the Gods Calamity
Wanhua refused to send his disciples to the Investiture of the Gods, arguing that an academy devoted to education, order, and preserving life should not provide victims for a slaughterous calamity. His refusal intensified conflict with Yuanshi Tianzun while receiving qualified support from Tongtian and Laozi. 94 95 96
Rather than openly contest the Shang-Zhou struggle, Wanhua focused on preserving civilization. He sent agents into Chaoge, established hidden repositories of knowledge, coordinated with Nuwa, and arranged secret cooperation with Western Qi to rescue loyal, capable people from the collapsing Shang order. 105 118 119
Notable Quotes
“My Dao is not a private Dao; it should be a common vessel for all under heaven.” 89
“The disciples of the Academy do not engage in acts of slaughter, nor do they form vicious Karma.” 95
Trivia
- Wanhua’s first public invitation to Myriad Dao Academy provocatively described potential recruits as disciples who could “sweep the courtyards and tend to the books.” 9
- Although the Myriad Dao Celestial Tome began as an artifact incapable of acting, Wanhua transformed its deduction function into the foundation of an entirely new Dao system. 1 3
- His approach to the Human Race emphasizes teaching people to become self-reliant rather than simply providing for them. 64
