This blizzard had come without warning. They had never experienced such terrifying cooling before—within a single night, the temperature had plunged from thirty degrees to minus thirty! It had gone from summer to winter in an instant, and northern winter at that! Frostbite was the least of it; some unlucky people had frozen to death on the spot! This was the heaviest snowstorm they had ever seen. Not only was the temperature low, but it had also caused an extremely severe snow disaster!
Some survivors had awakened in the middle of the night from the cold and could have been rescued, but their homes had collapsed under the weight of the snow, burying them inside! By the time they were dug out, they had long since frozen stiff.
