Background

Zhang Xinglie grew up alongside Zhou Leng in Imperial Dragon Bay. As a child, his obsessive thought process and poor ability to manage ordinary tasks led adults and children to treat him as an idiot or freak. Zhou Leng, however, continued to regard him simply as the friend he had grown up with, regardless of Zhang's growing talent and reputation 42.

He was protective from an early age. In sixth grade, he stood between Zhou Leng's group and several older youths demanding money, disabled the leader with a joint lock, and drove the group away 545. Li Yuanhe also helped Zhang when he was bullied as a child 161.

By high school, Zhang had become Eighth Middle School's undisputed ace: first in academics, physical education, and martial arts examinations, with the city's highest physical-education score.
