Inside the inn, Shen Lun and Long Fei stood at daggers drawn.
Suddenly, Shen Lun smiled.
"Long Fei, with death at your doorstep, you're still this stubborn."
"But I hope that, in a few days, when you see your wife and daughter, you can remain this stubborn."
Whoosh.
Shen Lun made his move.
A chilling blaze of sword light instantly enveloped Long Fei.
Long Fei likewise forced himself to hold on. Gripping his saber in his left hand, he unleashed a dazzling flash of saber light, carrying terrifying Sha Qi as it crashed fiercely against Shen Lun's sword light.
Sword light collided with saber light.
Faintly, there was also the thunderous roar of blood and qi.
The next instant, the two figures separated at once.
Bang.
Long Fei's saber smashed heavily into the ground, while he clutched his chest and flew backward.
Pfft.
Long Fei spat out a mouthful of blood, his face seeming even paler.
Shen Lun was utterly unscathed.
Looking at Long Fei in the distance, a faint smile curled at his lips.
"So even the mighty Slayer Saber has fallen to this day!"
"Seven years ago, when you killed my younger sister, did you ever imagine this would be your end?"
"Hahaha, don't worry. I won't kill you. I'll make you taste every agony in this world."
"Go. Sever the tendons in his limbs first, then cripple his martial arts."
Several maidservants behind Shen Lun answered and moved, swords in hand as they walked toward Long Fei.
Everyone in the inn was trembling with fear. No one dared step forward again.
After all, the corpses of the few martial artists who had stepped forward earlier still lay on the ground.
Long Fei wanted to stand, but after struggling for a while, he finally gave up.
Watching the maidservants approach with murderous intent, Long Fei closed his eyes.
He understood. This was the martial world!
From the moment he had stepped into the martial world, perhaps today's ending had already been fated.
Yet as Long Fei recalled all that had happened in the past, he had no regrets!
When he had carved a bloody path out of the mountain of corpses and sea of blood left by the Northern Barbarians, he had already been someone who had died once.
What did it matter if he died once more now?
Perhaps his only regret was his daughter.
"Disaster does not extend to one's wife and children"—in the martial world, that was merely something people said.
Whoosh.
The maidservants' sharp sword tips aimed straight for Long Fei's limbs.
Suddenly, a dark shadow flickered.
Slash.
With a soft sound, the three maidservants stiffened all over.
Then, a line of blood appeared across their throats, and blood sprayed out.
Thud.
The three maidservants collapsed to the ground, their bodies twitching incessantly before they gradually went still.
"Hm?"
Shen Lun's pupils contracted slightly. Astonishment crossed his face as his blade-sharp gaze instantly fixed on an unfamiliar figure standing before Long Fei.
Long Fei also opened his eyes, confusion in his expression.
He had no impression of this person before him. It seemed they did not know each other at all.
Yet the other person had saved him.
Shen Lun's voice was icy as he said, word by word, "Have you thought this through, sir? If you save Long Fei, you become an enemy of me, Shen Lun!"
Shen Lun tightened his grip on his sword, his aura steadily rising.
"If I kill you, won't I have no enemies left?"
Lu Changsheng had barely finished speaking.
The next moment, his figure swayed slightly and vanished without a trace in the blink of an eye.
Yet Shen Lun faced him as though confronting a great enemy, thrusting out the longsword in his hand almost instantly.
"Clang clang clang clang clang."
Dazzling sword-light collided ceaselessly in midair.
Lu Changsheng wielded a Short Sword, while Shen Lun used a longsword.
Moreover, Shen Lun's swordsmanship was renowned for its speed.
Thus, their swordpoints met needle for needle, and in the span of a single breath, they may have exchanged dozens of strikes.
Dozens of strikes sounded like many, but they took very little time.
After only one breath, Shen Lun's entire body shuddered. He staggered back two steps, then raised a hand to touch his neck.
A faint, thin line of blood had appeared across his throat.
Yet blood flowed from that mark, more and more of it, until it finally seemed to gush forth.
"What a fast sword!"
After saying that, Shen Lun's body fell stiffly backward.
With a thud.
Shen Lun's eyes remained open, but he had lost all breath of life.
Dead!
The White-robed Scholar, Shen Lun, was dead!
The sight left everyone in the inn scarcely able to believe it.
How long had they even exchanged blows?
Only an instant, and Shen Lun had died.
One had to know that Shen Lun, the White-robed Scholar, was no nameless figure in the martial world.
"Shen Lun is dead? This unfamiliar martial artist killed him in an instant?"
"So strong! The White-robed Scholar Shen Lun was famous for his swift sword. His swordsmanship was truly as fast as rushing thunder. Yet he died at the hands of a swordsman even faster than himself."
"Just who is this man? I have no impression of him at all. Could it be that he has never traveled the martial world?"
The people in the inn were still reeling from the speed of Lu Changsheng's swordsmanship and the strength of his skill.
But Lu Changsheng had already sheathed his sword and walked straight over to Shen Lun's corpse, searching it carefully.
Everyone stared blankly.
He did not even spare the corpses of the maidservants.
However, there was not much to gain—only a few Silver Notes.
After searching the bodies, Lu Changsheng rose to his feet and went over to Long Fei.
Long Fei's mouth twitched slightly. The act of searching corpses truly made him somewhat awkward.
But that was the martial world.
Though Long Fei was a great hero who hated evil as though it were his enemy, he was not a rigid, pedantic man.
He struggled to his feet and gave Lu Changsheng a deep salute. "Thank you for saving me, sir. May I ask if you know me?"
Long Fei knew that he was quite famous in the martial world, so the question was only natural.
Lu Changsheng merely shook his head. "Today is the first day I have met Hero Long."
"Still, when the road is uneven, someone must level it. Shen Lun went too far."
In truth, Lu Changsheng had not intended to interfere before this.
He did not wish to involve himself in the disputes of the martial world. He only wanted to practice martial arts in peace.
It would have been one thing if Shen Lun merely wanted to kill Long Fei, but he had repeatedly brought harm upon Long Fei's wife and child, threatening Long Fei.
Lu Changsheng was no chivalrous hero, nor did he consider himself some soft-hearted saint.
Yet he greatly admired people like Long Fei.
Shen Lun's actions displeased him.
Long Fei nodded. Shen Lun had indeed stopped at nothing in seeking revenge.
"No matter what, I will remember your life-saving grace, sir. Should the chance arise in the future, I will surely repay you!"
With that, Long Fei staggered as he prepared to leave the inn.
Lu Changsheng stepped forward and supported Long Fei.
"You are seriously injured. It is not suitable for you to move about for now."
"Where are you going? I'll take you there."
Long Fei hesitated for a moment, but in the end, he still nodded. "I have a safe place in Wushan City. I'll have to trouble you to take me back."
Lu Changsheng led the horse, checked out of the inn, then helped Long Fei out of the inn.
Before long, the two arrived outside a secluded courtyard.
"This is the place. I have so many enemies, yet no one knows I'm hiding here."
Long Fei said with a smile.
Lu Changsheng pushed open the courtyard gate and helped Long Fei inside.
"Whoosh..."
Suddenly, Lu Changsheng vaguely sensed a fierce gust of wind behind him.
Without even thinking, he swiftly drew his short sword.
Clang.
The short sword left its sheath.
Lu Changsheng scarcely even turned around. As though he had eyes in the back of his head, he slashed out with his sword.
As Lu Changsheng turned, the sharp short sword had already reached the front of a woman in red behind him.
The woman seemed petrified with fright, standing motionless like a statue.
A fair neck. A razor-sharp blade.
It seemed that in the next instant, the woman's neck would be cut open by the sword's edge.
"Spare her under the sword!"
Long Fei's eyes widened as he shouted.
Perhaps because he had used too much force, his voice was faintly hoarse.
